"Torrential rains poured down from the skies, turning southern China into a vast ocean. In just one hour, the downpour in Changsha, Hunan Province, was enough to fill 54 West Lakes in Hangzhou. In some areas of Changsha, water rose up to an adult’s neck. Other provinces — Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangdong, and Guangxi — were all overwhelmed by catastrophic floods.

In Guilin, Guangxi, the disaster has been described as the worst flood in 30 years. Since mid-June, over 180,000 people have been affected. Relentless rainfall, coupled with upstream flood discharges, caused water levels to surge rapidly. At one hydrological station in Guilin, levels peaked at nearly 149 meters.
