BEGINNERS GUIDE TO MUDCRABBING | HOW TO CATCH BIG MUD CRABS | SET CRAB POT | CATCH AND COOK

[Music] upside down upside down down down down [Music] [Music] let's get it dud all righty welcome back to another episode of fishing with curry on this episode we are doing the complete beginner guide to Mud crabbing so I have done a pre-recording to this at home setting up some pots putting the ropes on them putting the labels in them doing how I do it so I will roll on that footage now and I'll get back to you while we're setting I'll give you a sneak peek the you pots up all right I will see you when I'm back here with some pots set up he how are we welcome back to another episode I'm like a kid on Christmas got some new crab pots the 800 Aussie gold priority because carry is always a priority but this video is going to be a bit different we'll do some fishing and stuff as well but we're going to do a beginner's guide to crabbing so from set your crab pots up tying your ropes on your floats how I like to do it and then we'll also when we're in the boat we'll go into where I like to put them why I like to put them there and what times I like to put them there like in the tide and the moon phase so we'll go through all that but I thought I'd do a little demonstration of how I tie me ropes and stuff on and what ropes I used so these are a Lead Core rope 10 m in length each of them so they sink so it stops other boats if you got a lot of big tide and a lot of wind coming across and cutting your floats and stuff like that if you've got a long rope on them so this is just directly straight down the whole time so that's the brand there crab and gear very good but what I like to do is I like to paint me float so I'm going to get me daughter on that that's why I've got the paint brush in my hand we'll get the red paint out ready for that here she is right now my little artist so we will go and get the paint ready you can get started on this while I undo these and we'll see here we go we'll be back to you after I get these unwrapped and she's out there painting let's get it all right the daughter is set up painting so we will unpackage the best bit of equipment I like to use open it up definitely w't coming out of this they there we have it four of the Aussie gold ultimate Pro crab pox let's get rid of these Zippy tires all right get rid of these for a second and I'll show you how I like to tie them on so we got our sinking rope here as I've already explained they just come out like that but you also have to think so these are a four entry pot 1 2 3 4 so your crabs come in into them entry so you don't want to put your rope blocking the crab so put it close to one of where the struts go so these have the automatic retractable struts to hold them together and it's as simple as that putting them together but we don't need to do that right now we just need to get a rope on it what I like to do is tie my rope to the bottom nowadays for the simple fact when you're pulling it in it pulls the bottom straight up out of the mud and you're not dragging it through the mud by pulling it by the top so we'll tie this one to the bottom obviously not at an opening so we'll go right by this strut here simple little loop knot in to where you going to tie back through around twice and back through so that's just your normal loop knot I use on all me lures and everything like that and that's not going anywhere it's got a little bit of play there perfect and I also do the same knot on my floats so you've obviously got to make the knot a little bit bigger to get it through the float and everything like that but I'll take his out there and we will see how little mini KY is going on the painting but these are a couple of the things you'll see me using tomorrow so that's a couple of the new Vibes that um TT have bought out they're the slim version so they're only a 20 G and I love me twitchit as well so these will be more snag bash and the twitchit and then these will when we find some fish schooled up we'll drop some Vibes on them and see if we can get them to convert but let us go see what daughter is up to how are you going princess I've already done one oh look at you go so after these are all painted up red of course you got to get your kids involved what I like to do is get either a black or white paint marker write your last name on them cuz all you got to have is on on the floats is your name and then you've got to have a tag label inside the PO inside the pot with your name number and address on it so I will start making labels I'll show you how I do that and by then the float should be ready and we can get these crab HS put together all right and just like that we have made some labels so I just cut them out of an old gravy tub like that something like that I usually use a um paint lid or anything like that some hard plastic that'll last so I got four tags there for the four pots so like I said you got to have your name your number and your address on each pot so I'll go ahead and write all them on and then once I've done that I'll quickly write it on this one so I don't have to pull it back out all right so that one's all sorted now what I like to do is zip time to the bottom of the pot so you just got to go through one of your doors put him in there right on the edge so it's easy to read if they need to read it when they pull you over them lovely men in that boat that Mighty cross loves but we won't mention that and you have a label in your pot so last thing to do I'll quickly run out grab one of them floats might be still a little bit wet but we'll get it going all righty we have a float beautifully painted by my lovely daughter so like I said same thing loop knot but you just want to make it a bit bigger so I like to leave so about that much to get through your pot leave a decent Loop straight through your float back through the loop you've made pull it tight around your main Lo twice and back through your Loop and you have a crab float tied on so that is one of them four pots sorted just like to Bunch me rope up put it on top of the pot so it's all ready to go and look at that we have one Crab Pot ready to go in the water tomorrow I will see you tomorrow on the water when I'm picking some good spots and why I'm picking them I'll finish setting these last three pots up we're just going to run the four pots tomorrow all brand new pots so hopefully they don't have a Jack Black Jelly Bean curse on them and we will get some mud spiders I'll see you there okie dokie so as you've just seen we have the new 800 Aussie gold pots so a little bit better size for your recreational fisherman if you ask me um the per 900 pots are an absolute awesome pot you've seen me catch oh I'm even going to I say hundreds of crabs in them so we will get these ones out get them in the water I have used one before I did get a little sample pot so I know that these work but let's show the audience hey let's show the audience how good they really are and today for bait we have some of my favorite some lovely chicken carcasses straight from Lambert here in Townsville $15 a box can't complain does me a few trips we got enough there to put two in each pot I'm going to run them a couple of times today cuz we got to get out of this system in a couple hours so I'll run them and move them to the system I'm going to fish for the rest of the day but we will just see how we go so that is one pot set up as you seen bait B at the bottom it's got the retractable legs like the 900 pots so they sit nice and flat as you can see they just sit flat it's got the nice shark Clips plastic shark Clips so they're not deteriorating you got your ring which is not going to rust and as you seen in the video my daughter painted me some floats my favorite color so we will get this in the water I'll set the rest of the pots up and we'll see if we can get some mud crabs in between while I'm waiting obviously I'm going to have a flick you're seeing the lures I'm going to be using so we'll just see how we go I was actually planning on going a little bit out of town for this video but circumstances have changed and I'm sorry it has been so long between videos but I was actually working on a v this video for 2 weeks and my SD card failed pretty well and just said all files are encrypted so I ended up giving it to a tech bloke and no luck so I'm redoing it and I've also done a little bit of filming for channel 7 which won't be out till next year so I can't really say too much on that but um yeah I used um carne's boat Christopher Carney from Carney Toyota and four-wheel drive Central I borrowed his boat a 450 quintrex top Ender and oh my God have I got the taste so I ended up doing a little bit of upgrad so put some new flooring in the old girl put some stickers on we got the trailer sorted I put some new um easy loaders on the trailer and yeah so she got a bit of an upgrade cuz she was um dissed for a couple of weeks while I did that video but I'm not going to lie he's still trying to get that footage off for me but it is said it's not looking too good so any time will tell but I figured I'm not going to sit at home and wallow about it let's get out here and do what I love and make another one so as you seen it's as easy as that to set these pots up not only are they the best quality but if you ask me they're probably one of the easiest quality uh style of pot to set up as well so let's get these in the water come along for the adventure I'll leave you there you can see what I do and I'll see I'll show you why I'm putting them where I'm putting them so I'm going to run one around the corner from this little Sandbar cuz all the flow is coming through here and coming out of here on the tide so we're going to run one in this little pocket here just see if we can managed to get one on his way in or out or coming out of this nice array of mangr here which I'll show you so we got this nice line of mangr we got the tide that'll be coming in all out of here crabs will be coming in and out of these mangroves so we're going to Ho one right there bombs away one pot in the water show you is on the next one where I'm setting it up and um we'll get her in the water all right now the reason I choose this spot you have probably heard it before if you to watch me videos but if you haven't I'm Curry and this is fishing with curry but you see the mangroves here they're nice tall little bit spread out and then it goes to this dense foresty mangroves so I like to put them on the transition of them nice little stick hanging out there for me to mark where it is so I know where it is when I come come back and we'll get her in the water bombs away all right we'll move up the creek a little bit now and um I'll find a couple of spots I know this Creek a little bit so I know there's a couple of little honey holes up there two pots left to launch we'll see how we go eh right I don't know if you have worked it out for yourselves but the reason I'm picking here we got the flow coming in through here or out of here so we're going to put it on this inner Bank where all the flows going to be cuz if you ask me crabs are the Cockroach SL an of the creek and they move about Soldier about so I see a little tree hanging out across here it might throw the float up there but I've got to set one of these pots up so we'll float down slowly while I set it up one arm in two arms in and you can set them up by hand but I am a firm believer of work smarter not harder and I don't like busting me Fufu valve anymore so we use the crab spreader and it's as easy as that and they are brand new pots so they will be tight all right couple of chicken carasses in this F you look at that hello tree how are you tree nice to meet you tree all right the tide has turned we are going out all right so let's bombs away this fer here perfect little spot if you ask me make sure you sort your rope before you H it you don't want to go losing these pots H three in the water we might quickly set this one up cuz I know where it's going already now I'm not going to lie to you the bay is not crabbing the best at the moment but I have quality gear quality bait and we'll see how we go but the pro is back in the bay crabbing which all goodness to him it's his job he's got to make a living but it just makes it harder for us followers but that's all right makes it a challenge for all Curry we will get a feed of crab we will worst comes to worst I can leave them in overnight we got three in this one lucky lucky pot and um we'll come back in the morning and check them if we don't have any luck today but like I said we got 3 hours soaking in here go back to another system and we'll soak them there for a few hours while we have a lick just up here is the next spot let's get it and you can see why I've picked this nice deep gutter there's a big hole out here crabs will congregate in places like this so let's put a pot there remember we got the nice sinking rope so it'll be straight up and down put it where your pot is and Bob is your uncle all righty we have just come back to the start of the pots we have been flicking to no one little Cod don't even know if I got any footage of him but um we'll see how we went with these pots eh pot number one is there many krabbies about today oh I see a silhouette of now remember only been 2 hours and we have yeah yeah I think he's going to go that fell we got a Jenny oh know that's a buck as well let's see how they go quality pots get your quality results hey look at that we give him a check first oh he's a strong gra oh he's good he is good there's one one down one pot all right wasn't expecting that after just 2 hours but hey would you complain all right now we have our legal Buck now to stop him from crawling around around and tucking any other crabs you get or biting you you want to put him in one of these a king crab crab cuff so you can get these online at king crab or on Facebook follow the prompts and you'll come up with his website Cody's a top bloke Cody and John run it so all right all we got to do hold on I'll tilt you down all right I'll tilt you down so you can see without pressing the stop button and you just want to lay them strings over the front of him pin him down put that underneath him and then it is as simple as grabbing them strings pulling it around underneath and into that little slot I suppose you would call it and this one same thing around his claw make sure you get it in that little joint pull it tight and if you really want to you can double it up so you go around again go around again and that Mr Crab ain't going nowhere he is a nice heavy Little Crab I'll set the um hash and bag up keep him nice and robust for the trip but I think we might have another one in here that's going to go close so we'll have a look get them both out we up fairies crab measure that one's under but this one here could be all right he is is oh he's a mill under all right see fellas three out of the first pot not bad like I said we're going to move these back to another system so I'll leave him set up should be plenty of room in here on me solo solome today we'll go up and get the next pot and um see how we went eh one from one so far not too shubby okay partt number two from the first 2hour soak let's see how we did let's see how we did it's looking oh we got two big boys lovely one might be a floater but they're both definitely legal let's see yeah they go might get the measure out of there here's me brain the 800s hey waiting gold already the 800 gold oh he's a heavy crab I'll show you is on the L detector easily legal another one for the crab cuffs another one for the crab C Boys Hey all right let's do it again let's do it again he's been fighting with that other fell in there he's got a broken Ripper strong as hell bit as strong as a crab comes this far actually so we'll definitely double him up I have nothing but complete faith in these crab C so you can see me hand there close to his Nippers that's two down and now I think this fell being light in color he might be a FL but we'll have a look and I'll show you how to check if the crabs full on yeah feels like a floater already easily legal on the measure but the way you want to check push in on his six-pack there so one two 3 4 five six them 1 2 3 1 2 3 that's his six-pack pushing on them that's nice and soft so shouldn't say nice and soft that's crap and soft but you hear that push in you wouldn't even get a sandwich out of him feeding him up and get him next time stuck this pot up all right two from two pots not two shabby go up to pot three and four and see what they have bought us let's go all righty so I got a fair bit of faith in this one this one's had the current running through I know it's only been 2 hours but it's had it running through along this bank so hopefully my thoughts and what I think would happen on a um outgoing tide has happened and the crabs have moved out or tried to move out onto the flat and been intercepted by none other than the ultimate Pro Crab Pot Aussie gold pot so let's see how we went [Music] oh I see a good crab I see a real good crab all right so that's worked we got a big Jenny a nice big one claw buff and possibly another keeper all right let's have a look and get the measure on me that's one good one we'll have a look at him he's cliffing at it he's got the multi cross so he's going to be nice and full make sure he size here's size and he is hard look at that that's a good crab he's only got the one Nipper but he's a good crab and even though he's only got the one Nipper makes it just as easy to crab cuff him you just got to only do half the work so grab ourselves a crab cuff ourselves a crab cuff I tried to to this down and stopped it again but grab yourself a crab cuff look it around his Nipper you have seen it a few times already and in there like that now you can either leave this one just dangling or just wrap it around him so that's three in the bank so far with another possible here let's have a look all right so they're under and a Jenny so that's a Jenny I can tell by the back here it's got a fan shape and that's a little bu so we'll get rid of them throw the measure out see you guys and we have potentially another keeper ey oh he's under that fell go back grow shed and I'll get you next time all right so three from three so far we got three crows down there I'll sort that H bag out wet it and get them in a nice cool spot but we'll pull this last pot before I do that and see how we went eh lucky last pot like I said can only run the four today they're the Le uh that is the legal thing to do the legislation so four pots per person can have up to 20 Pots if you want if you got five people but four pots per person seven crabs per person up to a maximum of 14 per boat so 14 crabs per boat if you got two people if only one person so me today I can only take seven crabs but that is more than enough let's see how this last pot's gone we'll get up there I can see it now let's get it all right we have the last pot in hand let's see how it went get rid of that noisy bloody two stroke make sure your lens is clean let's see what's in here right o i see a crab I see a crab o a buried up Jenny and that's a big boy look at him so that Jenny has berri so definitely show you how let's have a look in there that's an interesting pot for 2 hours little brimo in there as well let's get to a sorty rick oh he's got a big called up fell he's a big there's Jenny and there's a possible legal all right we'll have a look at this Jenny first we don't want to stress her out too much cuz she has little bubbers right actually get rid of you cuz you're looking dangerous you're looking [Applause] dangerous have we got a legal that is e that is another legal crab and he is hard oh four from four and I know there's another legal in there [Applause] all right four from four get there big boy all right now let's have a look at this big girl we don't want to damage her but have a look at her so she's buried up so that's a buried up CRA and if you didn't know they actually had out to the wreath to lay their eggs and it depends on the Wind where the crabs are going to be good that year so that's a buried up female so we'll let her go nice and gently see a girl and we'll get this big F out of here a big boy get rid of them ones see Bud couple of Littles see mat and look at the size of this horse the size of this bloody horse Hors moral has anyone got a saddle I'm going for a ride this thing's a horse oh heavy don't even have to measure him but we will just to show you so that's on his point easily legal that's a goodie he's nice and hard five in 2 hours not too shabby so we might be upgrading cuz I can only keep seven like I said got plenty of friends and family that love them and I like to share so if you can catch them more than welcome to catch them and I love to be the one to show you how all right now we've pulled down pots I'll show you how I look after them want a nice fion bag like this just put him in the water get him soaked and then simple as oh got a Nipper from a little crab in there you can go back as simple as putting your crabs inside the Hing bag now they can't hurt each other cuz they're all crab cuffed up not bad for 2 hours I will say ultimate price hey do their business all right now we have that sorted crabs will be happy for the rest and you just give them a drink if you're staying out for the whole day but let's get these pots situated so they're not going to blow down and smash me up I'll see is when we're getting it and off to the next Creek we go adventuring let's get it my way oh got a little bit wet coming across the bay little bit choppy out there but that's all right we will um get these pots back in the water wanted to do this video for you guys to show you how I set up me pots and where I put them so we've come into another system as you can see there is a big gutter here so we're going to Chuck it at one at the mouth of this so I will just Chuck it in neutral there this pot here is set up ready to go and it is close to me now I'm just going to turn side on and we'll throw it as we are leaving so look at how far that gutter goes back up there got to be some mud crabs in there beautiful at the entrance see you in a few hours buddy all right we'll keep moving up along this along these mangroves and I'll show you where to position [Music] them all right so we got the change in the mangroves here so we will put one here we will make make sure bait's always on the bottom get your rope sorted another thing I like about this lead fill rope it doesn't tangle very easily one there two more to find spots for let's go so we will get this pot ready [Music] and see how we did see how we do I should say one lucky last part let's find this SP all righty and just like that it has been another 2 hours I'm not going to show you the fishing side of things today cuz it's a crabbing video but I am going for a good bar fish with the Ultima Pro Dean tomorrow probably won't be a lot of crabbing but I want to get a barer before bar season closes so we'll run these pots and I'm going to get out of here for today we'll probably res soak them but um yeah I want to get out of here it is bloody hot and I want to get home to my baby girl I want to get home to my baby girl all right float in hand let's see how we did 2 hours in a different system there's another one oh boys I love it a I really really love it oh that's a good C yes sir so that'll take the tul to six I will double check that means we can only have one more crab for the day looks like the boy is going to bag out but don't count your chickens before they H that is a bloody good crab I will say that so we might reset this F quickly from now Bob is your uncle all right let's get this fell sorted just go out to the middle of [Music] it grab myself a crab cuff cuz I believe I'm going to need it ooh oh yeah buddy look at the size of that that's his small one hey that's a goodie that's a goodie I'll show you them on the measure he's a good centimeter over that F remember crab cuff them up crab cuff them up boys One Secured about to be two secured still out in the middle of nowhere which is good and doubly not into the bag with the other Morel woohoo lovely lovely lovely all right let's go tomorrow morning I've left the pots in that system the four pots but I decided to leave them I've got me six crabs here so so we've got me six crabs just pulled them out of the hhen bag for a nice happy snap but um yeah he prevailed once again with the crabs today can't complain so tomorrow we will go check them pots um probably really early in the morning or late afternoon but I'm actually going to go to a system about an hour away um for a bar fish with a good mate and you all know him but you all see that tomorrow so that'll do it for part one other than I'm going to show you how I cook them and um dispatch them and everything like that so I'll do a cook up this afternoon of them but yeah so it was a very very rewarding day and I'm glad it all worked out and you got to see what I do but like I said only male mud crabs 15 cm across the back females are a no take and I tell you one thing they bloody taste good they're all in good next still that bag's nice and wet so I'll get them back in their H and bag and before I cook them up I'll show you what I do but I like to ice them down so I don't throw their Nippers or legs and I'll show you that when it's happening but glad it was a good day it always is when you're not working all righty it is the next day we caught some extra crabs today you'll see that in part two but we're just doing the cookups so I've got them nice and Ice down at the moment so they don't throw their legs if you don't ice them down and you're cooking them whole um they tend to throw their legs and Nippers if they're still alive when you put them in the boiling water so ice them down it stops that happening but we'll wait for this to come to the boil bought some buckets of salt water home so we can cook them in that that's a key step make sure you get some proper salt water I know you can make your own salt water and whatnot but if you get salt water from the creek it's a lot better so keep that in mind we'll wait for this to come to the boil put some crabs in and I'll tell you what to do after that the water's nearly boiled we got three cuz that's my share that's plenty enough we still got seven in here for a couple of friends and family and for the possible cook up we're going to do so they are some nice size crabs in there but we'll get these in the water very shortly and we will be back at it bit of point of view soccer against Minnie Ronaldo here he reckons hey what do you got BR o o oh he's got past dad oh he's got past mom but he missed the goal no good what does Ronaldo do when he scores a goal so you didn't even do it prop do one quick come on what do you got bud Mom and Dad vers you quick we got the castet goals always works dad all right we have come to a rolling boil we have our three Morel we're cooking them up have oh look at them gold red so now they're in the water don't start your timer yet wait for it to come back to the boil and I like to do 12 13 minutes depending on how big the crabs are but most of the time it's 13 minutes so wait for it to start rolling boil again and then 13 minutes I'll show you when it's back at the boil all right we've come back to the boil sorry now you start your timer I just tuck a timer on me phone take a rocket sers so we got 13 minutes going soon as that goes off pull them out and while they're cooking I get a bag of ice put it in an esy with a good bug in it and make yourself with the rest of the salt water you bought home a bit oh yeah before I have that here it's nice clean ice here the boy's got his ice you don't need a lot of water just enough to cool them that will be perfect let that sit there wait we still got 11 minutes left soon as that goes off into the ice slurry ice them down in the slurry for maybe 5 minutes and then just let your water drain out and eat them at your leisure well they are done time is up crabs are cooked lovely woo straight into the ice lurry Sun get in there boys oh lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely get him in there get some meat off the shell some nice crabs right there and that will conclude the beginnner guide to Mud crabbing it was a good little weekend ended up with 10 crabs but you'll have to tune into part two to see the fish we caught and what we got up to today so it was an interesting day to say the least we caught some creatures and you'll have to wait and see to find out whether we got our last batter of the season but I'll see you on part two see you later
