Puffy loves just lying down right here, by the stove.
He spends a lot of time right there, warming up.
See?
It's just about minus 40.
Very, very cold.
Very cold.
I'd say it's something like minus 38 to be exact.
Here by the old, empty wood storage area.
Where are you, buddy?
Puffy!
He's getting brave.
Oh, there he is.
Yeah, okay.
I've been here a few days.
So I need to charge up the power station.
I'm going to run the generator.
Had it in there next to the stove for a while.
And she should go right away.
You want to go inside?
I got his boots on.
Look.
You see?
Got his boots on.
And it allows for him to stay outside a little bit longer.
I think he wants to play.
Whoa!
Careful.
I got to fill this up with gas first, okay?
I've struggled with this generator.
And without a doubt, it's like 80%, maybe?
No, 70% operator error.
Just things that I'm not doing right to make sure it works.
Bringing it into the cabin and warming it up always works.
Especially if I leave it in there for an hour or two.
It always works.
And the last time I did that, it started on the first pull.
But one thing I really noticed that made a huge difference
was going to a really high-end winter oil.
And I went to the Polartec guys.
That's the name of the store.
Outdoor experts.
And said, hey, I need the best oil for the Honda that you guys sell.
And they had these jugs.
They are not cheap.
100 bucks.
And this thing, the last time I ran it on full power,
ran for about six hours on full power,
charging up that generator and powering the cabin at the same time.
Just going to that oil, I think, made a massive, massive difference.
Uh-oh.
I got to put it back inside.
Oh.
Yes.
So I've had the power station powering the cabin
through this input here.
And this is not going to be the permanent solution for the power station.
I'm going to power it through the interior at some point once I'm done
getting things settled and work is near completion.
I'll figure that out.
I have no idea how they've wired this thing.
Like, I don't even know if there's...
There might even be electrical going through that front wall
that I want to tear out.
I have no idea.
So now, we're all generator power.
Let's go charge that power station.
So right now I'm at 58%.
So I would say it's going to take maybe three hours
to charge this thing up completely.
Plug this in.
You can see it's taking in 1,000 watts there in the bottom right-hand corner.
You're just looking for love, aren't you?
You just want a little love?
I think I might leave those booties on you for the day.
For when you go outside you can spend...
Wow! Look at that!
The engine temperature is minus 39 and she started!
Holy crow!
OK, I have to let that warm up for maybe 20 minutes, honestly.
I'm going to let it go and go and go until it's about 35 degrees Celsius.
And, by the way, minus 39 Celsius
engine temperature is like pretty much minus 39 Fahrenheit.
So you...
Everyone can understand just how darn cold that engine was when it started.
So now, while it's warming up, I'm going to go down on the ice, throw the rope.
Puffy got his boots on.
We'll have a little bit of play time.
Then I got to get some work done.
Oh, you got the rope. Good boy.
There he goes.
What do you smell?
Hey, you smell something?
OK.
You want to share the rope with me?
OK.
Got his booties on.
Just loving it out here.
There's actually a bit of heat coming from that sun.
Let's go check on that snowmobile, OK?
Might be close now.
The engine temperature now is 47 degrees Celsius.
Perfect.
Some people say putting it in reverse
is the best way to move your snowmobile for the first time
after it's been really, really cold.
Because reverse is like the lowest gear.
Just kind of gets things moving nicely, you know?
Where are you? OK.
I'm coming. Look out. I'm going to squish you.
I'm going to squish you.
Come on.
I left all my straps at the house.
So, I'm not sure if this is going to work.
It might.
One in the back?
I don't think he's going anywhere.
If I do that, then I do this.
These guys might not even...
Oh, there's a bit there.
Yeah, OK.
There. I think we're good.
All right.
I just don't want to be whacking you.
Look out, boy. Look out. You're going to get killed.
Like a champ, huh?
OK. Unload this stuff. Go back down.
Get the rest of it.
It's like I am not cold whatsoever.
It could be minus 50.
I'm really warm in this thing.
It's incredible. But I'm active.
And that has a lot to do with it.
Here we go.
That's one way to get it off.
Come on.
Good boy.
OK. In you go.
In you go.
My favorite kind right there.
Kindling built in.
This is stuff from last year
that I gathered.
It's about a year old now.
It's been sitting.
It should split perfectly.
The temperature is warming up
slowly but surely.
Right now, it's, well...
I mean, it's minus 33,
but it's warming up.
It really is. It's warming up.
And it's going to go up to minus 15 tomorrow.
And so,
that is perfect
for working on the extension.
So I decided,
you know, I got the water,
the snow melting there.
I'm going to heat that up.
Do the dishes.
I'm going to split some wood here.
Get some of that work done.
And tomorrow,
I'll get that job done around the extension.
This mall is amazing.
This stuff isn't breaking that easily
because it's so...
it's still a bit green.
And there's a lot of fat wood in that.
This guy right here,
if you look closely,
where are they?
There, look.
Right there.
All kinds of cuts.
That's me trying to split this thing last year.
It was just way too green
to get through this thing.
I tried.
So after a year of sitting out
here at the cabin,
I mean, this is a big piece of wood.
That's almost one night right there.
After a year
of this thing sitting out,
and now with this mall,
I should be able to get through this.
Hoping.
Anyway.
Let's go, baby.
Let's go.
Oh yeah.
Now. Oh yeah, that's good.
He's going to go.
I'll give it everything.
Yes.
I mean, he's huge.
Come on.
Are you strong enough, Jay?
Oh yeah.
Look at this wood.
It's just perfectly dry.
It's gorgeous.
It's beautiful.
I love it.
You want to come out?
Come on.
He gets so lonely.
He gets sad
when he doesn't know
where I am right now.
Hey.
What?
Did you think I left?
I was out here doing work.
I took his booties off to dry them out.
It's like crazy warm out here right now.
It feels like it anyway.
Minus 33.
It feels so much warmer than minus 39 this morning.
I can really feel the nip coming out.
What about you, hey?
This guy had a really good run this afternoon.
I'll go on the snowmobile.
I'll just go down the ice road a little bit.
He'll just chase after me as fast as he can.
I'll come back and he'll do it.
It's a little bit of exercise for him.
Very good exercise, actually.
Just running around.
Beat himself out.
I am very careful, by the way.
When I have him chasing me on the snowmobile.
I'm very, very careful.
I know some people might think.
Don't do it. You're going to run him over.
I've got to knock on wood.
I hope it never, ever happens.
But I am very careful with it.
I make sure I have enough speed.
He can never catch me.
I see him in the rear view mirror.
Way in the distance.
I'm like, yeah, that's a good workout.
Get it all out.
But yeah, minus 33.
Back to that. Perfect.
Perfect outside.
Put in that dry piece first.
Gorgeous piece.
Let that thing.
Do its thing.
And this one, even though it has the kindling built in.
Like I like to say.
The outside is so dense with fat wood.
It's going to take a while to burn.
I'll sit that guy on top.
And by the time it's turn to burn.
He'll be ready to go.
I'm not the best.
At doing the dishes out here at the cabin.
If I come out just for a short visit.
And I'm really busy making a video.
I'll often just throw my dishes in a bag.
And bring them back to the house.
And as soon as I arrive.
Crystal is always like.
You got any dirty dishes?
And then she helps.
I bring the bin in.
And she gets right to it.
She puts away my food.
She's an amazing woman.
Amazing.
Really, really helpful.
Because normally when I get home.
I don't know how I edit.
Unless I'm spending extra time here.
So I'll go home.
And she'll take over.
With the cleaning.
And then I'll go downstairs.
And get right to work.
Alright.
That's it for tonight.
Everything is tidied up.
I'm going to bed.
We'll see you guys in the morning.
A few things I need here.
For sure.
Hey Puffy.
This sweeping doesn't have to be perfect.
Because I'm going to be bringing snow in and out.
As I work anyway.
But it does help.
Keeping things a little more tidy.
Okay so.
A few things.
By the way.
Those of you wondering.
I have a camera.
That can follow me.
So you're going to see the camera.
Moving and following me.
It's unbelievable.
It's awesome.
And so.
It looks like I have a camera person.
But I actually don't.
It's just the style of camera I have.
It's an Osmo Pocket 3.
So if you are wondering.
Is Jay out there alone.
Yes he is.
You can check it out.
Osmo Pocket 3.
They have this tracking.
That allows for it to follow the action.
Which is great.
Okay so.
This wall.
I need to do a little bit of work on it.
Before I start putting up the siding.
I'm going to put some blocking.
Right here and right here.
I might put one right here as well.
And then I'll do the same on this side.
Right here.
That'll just give it a bit more strength.
And.
From what I understand.
From what I've been told.
It will help prevent any sort of twisting.
That might happen around the windows.
Right so.
Obviously windows are delicate.
And so if the structure starts to twist.
It might crack the windows.
And I think that's actually what happened.
To a window up top here.
Unless the guys who put it in.
Put it in broken.
But.
I think the outside might have just cracked.
Because this cabin is not made perfectly.
I can tell you that.
And I'm looking at issues right now.
And I'm going uh oh.
Am I in trouble here?
Because it's not.
I don't know.
Plumb? Square?
Right?
The cabin is not.
And I've tacked my wall frame.
Directly to the cabin.
And right away.
It's not straight.
Right?
So that's an issue.
And I don't know what the solution is for this.
I'm not starting over.
So what it might lead to.
Is some plywood.
That is not perfectly even.
Going all the way around here.
Right?
Which isn't great.
It's not great at all.
No one wants that.
Right?
You want the plywood to be perfectly square.
And so.
It's all going to work out in the end.
It's a cabin.
And I think the room is going to be lovely when it's done.
But it might not be perfect.
Okay.
I got her.
Ten and a quarter.
Good.
I'm just eyeballing these guys.
I don't know if they're perfectly level.
But on my headers as well.
I need to put a strip of quarter inch plywood.
Right here.
Forty.
Forty nine inches.
By six.
There we go.
Now we are good.
Look at this.
Now we're in.
We are in.
So.
This guy is straight this way.
Perfect.
But.
Oh.
Wow.
Holy moly.
That's not good.
They're not right.
I got to go way back.
Wow.
This is off so badly.
It's got to go like this.
Look how far it comes off the bottom.
In order for it to be straight.
Look at that.
That's a huge drop.
Look.
There's like a centimeter in there.
Oh my gosh.
Easily.
I have to do what I didn't want to do.
I just have to.
I can't rely on the side of this cabin.
To keep things square.
It's unfortunate man.
So I've got to come out about.
Half an inch.
On the bottom.
Like this.
So I can tilt.
The wall back.
Like this.
And then I'll be able to.
Be flat and square on the front.
He's getting braver and braver.
I tell you.
Walking around.
Going on little adventures.
He's still staying very close.
No booties today.
It's actually a lot warmer.
There's an advantage to no booties.
And this is it.
He doesn't want to stay out too long.
As soon as his feet get cold.
He wants to go inside and sit by the.
Sit by the stove.
And.
The booties get wet.
So.
If I leave them on all day.
He's going to have wet feet.
He comes out.
He plays.
He goes inside.
His feet get soaked.
I've got to take them off.
I've got to dry them out.
I've got to put.
No.
No booties.
In and out.
Little stints.
Perfect.
He's very careful.
He does not want to go too far.
I've learned a million things.
Working on this structure.
I learned them the hard way too.
Holy.
Now I'll be able to get.
The crowbar in there.
This is actually kind of exciting.
I have to say.
Because.
That only took a few minutes.
And.
In the long run.
This is the best thing I can do.
I've got to pull it out just a little bit.
There.
Yes.
OK.
I mean that's perfect.
You're right on.
This cabin is crooked.
Holy crow.
Not me.
The original.
Look at the gap.
In between here.
It is crazy how far out this is pulled.
I mean it's pulled out.
A tremendous amount.
It's pulled out.
Almost an inch at the bottom.
That's how uneven this thing is.
Almost an inch.
At the bottom here.
That's crazy man.
So.
I'm going to wedge.
In here.
And when I.
Up against the side of the cabin.
It is perfect.
Excellent.
That's perfect.
Look at that gap.
You've done really well this week with me.
You've done really well.
He's a good protector.
He comes out here.
He goes on guard.
He checks all the trails.
And he comes back real fast.
Just making sure there's no.
No wolves.
Or bunnies that are going to attack us.
Squirrels.
What else? Ptarmigan.
The amount of adjusting.
And everything else that I've done here is crazy.
But.
That really only added about 40 minutes.
Of time.
So that is nothing.
Now.
Get this guy in.
Do the top.
Some of you guys know.
And some of you girls, women, men.
All of you know how to do this stuff.
It's really easy.
And I didn't go to school for any of this.
And so.
Boy I'm making.
I'm learning.
I'm learning pretty quickly here.
But I see it as almost like.
A new job.
When I used to work.
In the news business.
I had.
Worked my way up to a senior position.
And there were a lot of people that would come in.
New.
Fresh.
Out of college.
Went to school for it.
And it would take time.
They would learn.
Their stories would need work.
And they would improve slowly.
And then eventually.
They're excellent at what they do.
I haven't had any schooling.
I don't have a tutor out here with me.
It's just me.
Watching the comments.
And watching YouTube.
And just trying to do it that way.
And.
I'm not under any real pressure.
So that's one of the great things about this.
Woo.
There's still snow up there.
Come on baby.
Whoa.
Too aggressive Jay.
Too aggressive.
Oh buddy.
You're trapped now.
Come on.
You're really trapped here.
Okay.
Every time I do this.
I get in worse shape.
Shoot.
What can I do here?
Am I out?
Oh baby.
That wasn't easy.
Yeah.
Look at that.
Ready.
Aim.
Fire.
Good.
Let's use this.
Whoa.
Crown up.
Oh yeah.
Come on baby.
Let's go.
There.
Okay.
He's pinning that corner.
Now.
I'll do the same over here.
Relax you a little bit.
We're good.
This is good.
What a weird day.
What.
These little important things.
It might not look like much.
I know.
It hasn't progressed a lot.
But.
I'm hoping that everything I'm doing right now.
It's just going to pay off in the end.
So there's lots on the go in this video.
Right beyond this.
This is just a bit of work.
I think the next video though.
Is going to be me going into the woods.
And getting as much wood as I possibly can.
Because I am so low on wood.
It is not good.
So that'll probably be coming.
Really soon.
I'm going to get these walls up.
Windows in.Roof on.
It is going to happen.
I got the whole winter to do it.
I still have maybe two and a half more months.
Before.
The ice road shuts down.
And I can't get out here on a snowmobile.
Yeah maybe.
Maybe mid-April.
Maybe three months.
And then it's over.
So there's time.
But I don't want to just think to myself.
I've got all the time in the world.
And then I end up with not having the wood complete.
Anyway.
We are getting there.
Thanks so much for watching.
I'll be back really soon.
