Introduction to the work:
Musical mystic, sensitive synaesthete, megalomaniac muser - these are the catchwords used to describe Alexander Scriabin. One thing is certain: The Russian composer was a changeable personality, oscillating between dreamy and ardent. This is also reflected in his music, which unfolds from the lyrical, even in its more upbeat moments.

Scriabin grew up without a mother, she died when he was one year old. His father was a diplomat, so his aunt took him in. His phenomenal musical talent soon led him to Nikolai Zverev, one of the best piano teachers in Moscow. Sergei Rachmaninov was one of his classmates at his private school. Scriabin studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev, both students of Peter Tchaikovsky. Shortly after graduating, he was particularly lucky: he met the publisher and patron Mitrofan Belyaev, who thought highly of him. Belyayev organized concerts in other European countries for Scriabin's career as a pianist, and he immediately signed a contract for his compositions. Thanks to this support, the young musician was able to develop freely and became one of the pioneering composers of his time. His late piano sonatas and the orchestral works “Le Poème de l'Extase” and “Promethée. Le Poème du feu” opened the doors to the 20th century with their unheard-of harmonies.

His piano concerto is a far cry from these sounds. But the basic lyrical mood, the pensive fantasy, the yearning is already there. It is said that Scriabin wrote the work within a week in 1896. Whether this is true or is due to his self-stylization remains his secret. He completed the orchestral part the following year. Frédéric Chopin was unmistakably the god of the house at this time, which is evident both in the sparkling piano writing and in the orchestration. Overall, and especially in the pensive second movement, this concerto is inspired by Scriabin's special poetic talent.
