G'day, I'm Paul.
So, Ram has put the V8 on ice for the 1500 and transitioned to a six-cylinder.
They've called it the Hurricane.
We've got a high-output version now coming to Australia, along with a standard output
as well.
But I know what you're wondering.
Which one of those is fastest?
Is the six quicker than the V8?
Today, we're going to be doing some straight-line drag races, we're going to do some roll races,
and at the end, I'm just going to be quiet so you can hear what some of these drivetrains
sound like.
And most importantly, which one is our quickest in Australia?
Because the last time we did this whole drag race thing, the Silverado was the quickest
of the bunch.
And I want to figure out today whether it is still the fastest or whether the six-cylinder
has taken the beans.
So let's get straight into it.
Alrighty, let's give this a crack.
So as a reminder, we're going to go down to the finish line.
Once that's done, we're going to do a rolling race.
Let's crown the winner here, then we're going to go up against some of the other names in
this segment.
But as a bit of a recap here, if you don't know what Ram has done, they've basically
ditched the V8 and gone down the path of turbocharged sixes.
So it now uses a three-litre turbocharged straight-six, it's called the Hurricane engine.
This is the high output.
Next to me is the standard output, and all the way to the end there is the previous generation
V8.
400-odd kilowatts of power here for the high output.
Almost 100 kilowatts less for the standard output, but still at over 300 kilowatts of
power, it's got some mumbo.
This one has like 700 newton metres of torque.
They're all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and of course the V8 was a naturally
aspirated one with the e-torque engine.
We're going to be running these in four-wheel drive, auto, and in sport mode.
This has like a sort of launch control mode, so it lets you dial up just over 3,000 RPM,
which is pretty impressive.
Likewise with the standard output, but slightly lower revs, and then the old-school V8, just
going to be built up and then we'll smash them over the finish line.
So let's give this a shot.
Igor, ready for your countdown.
Okay, in three, two, one, go.
This is so fast.
Oh my God.
Yeah, it is.
Oh God.
Oh man, that is so fast.
I am lost for words.
That is insane.
Oh my God, this thing is a rocket ship.
Sean, did we all leave at the same time?
I kind of just, the second I left, I didn't know where you guys were.
I think we left at the same time.
I was caught by surprise.
I don't really know what happened.
This thing absolutely hauls, and yours, you just shot off.
Like genuinely, the TRX that we had here a little while back was fast.
So good.
Little bit of wheel slip off the line there.
But that has all of this, like noise, supercharger whine.
This genuinely feels like as fast, just without a V8 sound.
I'm just shocked at how they've been able to extract this much power and torque out of a six.
It kind of reminds me of the Barra XR6 Turbo.
You just build up a bit of boost, and then you just have to hold on for dear life.
Okay, so now it's time for us to do the rolling race.
And I'm going to roll up to 50, and these don't have like a manual shift mode.
They have a gear limit, which effectively limits the gear that the car will go to,
and it won't go over that.
It'll just sit in the limiter.
So can't point this activating any of that.
So we're just going to roll up in sport mode to 50 k's an hour,
and mash the throttle to see how they go.
We'll kick down, and then wedge in the finish line.
So righty, gents.
Let's do this.
So roll up to 50, and then on my go, we're going to mash the throttle.
So there's 40, 50 on three, two, one, go.
Oh, yes.
See ya.
Yeah, very nice.
That was interesting.
I was just watching as we took off there.
You know, the V8, for a very brief moment, had something.
And then once these kick down, and you get that boost from the turbo,
you're basically, it's on for young and old.
So yeah, very good.
All right, high output is the quickest.
So I reckon what we'll do now, we'll get the other pickup trucks,
get them on the start line.
And I might just try and destroy them in the standard output first,
just to see how that goes.
And then if that fails, I'm going to wheel this thing back out.
And I have a feeling it's going to make mincemeat of the rest of them.
Right, this is where the fun begins.
While the six-cylinder RAM is quicker than the old V8,
time to figure out whether it is actually quicker than the other cars in the segment.
So we already know what this is.
Ford F-150 here in Australia is only available with a single engine.
It's a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6.
So around 300 kilowatts of power, good chunk of torque,
and aluminium construction for the body.
So sort of well-built for this type of thing.
So it's going to be really close between these two, I think.
But most power and torque actually comes from the Toyota Tundra.
So that uses a six-cylinder turbo as well, but it has a hybrid assistance system.
And that gives it just a little bit of torque feel when it's required.
It'll be close, I think.
And finally, the Silverado.
So that thing is a beast.
So over 300 kilowatts of power, but naturally aspirated V8 instead of forced induction.
So that is going to definitely be the loudest here.
But will it be the quickest?
That's what we want to figure out.
So I think I am ready.
Igor, if you can count us in when you're ready, please.
Okay, launching on go.
Three, two, one, go.
He jumped the start!
Got a bit of a jump there.
All right, here we go.
Yeah, I got a jump, but this is hauling.
It doesn't actually feel that much slower than the others.
Wow.
All right, that was good.
He jumped the start 100%.
Sorry, guys, I have an apology to make.
I may have jumped the start there.
I was very excited and eager.
So we'll go back and do that once more.
I promise I won't do it again.
Okay, let's try that again this time.
I won't be a filthy little cheater like our boys is in our other drag races.
All right, Igor, count us in.
Launching on go.
Three, two, one, go.
Come on!
Oh, I left a little late.
Go, go, go, come on!
Go, go, go, go!
Come on!
Go!
Come on!
Yeah, boy!
Oh, you bastard.
Sean had me there.
So I went from leaving early to leaving late.
Let's do that one more time.
One more time.
This thing's a rocket.
All righty, take three.
Let's see if we can get it right this time.
I promise we'll get there.
Okay, here we go.
It's lined up.
All right, Igor, count us in.
Okay, launching on go.
Three, two, one, go.
There we go.
Come on!
See you, Sean.
Oh, no!
Come on, boy.
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
Oh, it's reeling him in, it's reeling him in, it's reeling him in.
Oh, there was an absolute bee's dick in that.
Oh, that was so close.
All righty, gents, let's do this.
So getting up to 50.
Just trying to be in lockstep in terms of where we are.
Okay, so 40.
There's 50.
Three, two, one, go.
Oh, the Chevy!
Have a look at him!
The dark horse!
Oh, the Chevy from nowhere.
I tell you what, that Chevy, like, it's...
for whatever reason, it just won't get off the line as fast.
But once they're rolling, that V8 just has legs for days.
I mean, by the time the turbo cars spool up,
the Chevy's already got a little run on them.
So it's pretty unreal stuff.
But I think it was a clear victory here to the Ram.
And had it have been a bit longer, the F-150 from the standing start.
What I'm going to do now, though, is switch over to
the Ram with the chest here.
And we'll try that one more time just to see how much of a difference there actually is.
Okay, so given we don't have the Ram 1500 RHO or the F-150 Raptor
and all the fun stuff here in Australia,
this is as hairy-chested as it gets for a Ram 1500.
So we'll see what happens here.
Over 400 kilowatts of power.
I think this is going to trounce them.
But you know, the F-150 is a bit of a dark horse, so to speak.
Not a real duck horse, because that's a Mustang.
But we'll see what happens.
So here we go.
Okay, launching on go.
Three, two, one, go.
Oh, good little start there from all of us.
All right.
It's only got the air-conditioner now.
This is absolutely moving now.
It is going so fast.
Jesus, that thing's quick.
What's the finish line there?
All right, let me just see.
Sean, what was the finishing order there?
I obviously clearly won that.
But what about the other two?
Three.
Well, I came second.
I think it was quite close between the other two, though.
Last I saw, though, the Chevy was just in front of the Tundra.
You know what I don't understand?
That Tundra has, like, outside of this high output Ram 1500, has the most power and torque.
But I just don't understand how it's so slow.
It just makes no sense to me.
And I think that time is all we all left at the same time, which is good.
All right, so let's go line up for a roll race.
And Chevy was a dark horse last time in the roll race.
Let's see what happens this time around.
I think ultimately, Sean, the 10-speed auto in that Ford,
it needs to send a letter back home to the States before it figures out
which is the right gear to be in for its eventual launch from 50 k's an hour.
Yeah, I'm gonna just put an email out to them now,
see if I can get an answer back before we start.
Yeah, market is high priority.
All righty, gents, let's do this.
50 k's an hour.
And on my count, we will drop the anchor.
So there's 30, 40.
All right, three, two, one, go.
All right.
Yet again, the Chevy.
F-150 decided it was going to play ball this time as well.
But that Chevy, my goodness, it just shows you there is no replacement for displacement.
There's an absolute beast.
Very impressive.
Very good.
All righty, so now I'm going to throw to the part where I'll just run these down the quarter mile
and you can listen to what the engines and exhaust sound like.
That was so much fun.
So thank you for watching.
Some interesting results there, but it does show you that, obviously,
six-cylinder much quicker than the outgoing V8 version of the Ram product.
Will it sell better?
I don't know.
People love the sound of a V8.
So we'll see how this is perceived.
I'm excited to see the RHO.
And there is also rumour as well that they're going to go back to V8 for like a proper TRX.
So that'll be exciting too.
