Franz Xaver Simm, the talented son of a church and history painter, received the best possible artistic training. After spending five years at the General Painting School of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts learning the basics, he transferred to the special department of historical painting under Eduard von Engerth and Anselm Feuerbach. In 1876, Franz Xaver Simm won the Rome Prize of the Vienna Academy, which gave him a two-year travel scholarship. He remained in Italy for five years before completing a commission for large-scale murals planned for the Caucasus Museum in Tbilisi and finally settling in Munich.
Franz Simm was extremely versatile, mastering a wide range of techniques and formats.
