Hey, I just got back from Thunder Bay and honestly it surprised me.
I went in early April so it was still pretty cold.
In this video I'm going to show you some must visit places that aren't too far from the
center of Thunder Bay.
But before we dive in, quick reminder to subscribe to the channel so you don't miss any of my
travel guides.
First stop, Marina Park.
It's right on the waterfront and even though the lake was still frozen solid, it was a
cool spot to check out.
It's this peaceful little spot with sculptures and paths.
Super chill.
Next up, the Cascades.
I wasn't expecting the trails to still be covered in snow, but they were.
Totally frozen over, so walking was a bit of a mission.
So welcome back.
This is another great place to come visit.
I've never been here, like I said earlier on, first time I've ever been to Thunder Bay
and it was recommended to visit this place.
It's called Cascades Conservation Area.
It's about three minutes from downtown Thunder Bay, maybe a little bit longer.
And it's five bucks to park your car and then we walk down and I'm going to see what it's like.
So let's come along.
Be careful when you come down here.
From the parking lot to the Cascades Falls is supposed to be about a 12 minute walk.
But I took the wrong turn off and it's going to be now another 14 minutes.
So it's not very well marked, I have to say.
So be careful if you do come down.
Make sure you follow the right path, otherwise you're going to walk.
Unless you want to hike, but I wasn't planning to hike.
I didn't have much time there.
So anyway, just be careful to make sure you take the right turn off.
Okay, bye.
I've arrived.
So now I'm going to go check it out to see what it looks like
and I'll show you how cool it is.
All right, let's do this.
The water was still running, though, and parts of the falls were frozen to these crazy ice shapes.
It actually looked pretty cool, even if I almost wiped out a few times.
The great thing about these Cascades is how close you are to the falls.
Look, right on the edge here.
So be careful though, but it's really cool because you can come so close to them.
And they're so powerful.
They're running really well.
Okay, let me continue.
After that, I went to Boulevard Lake.
Also still frozen, even though you could see water rushing through the sluice gates.
Not a ton of people out, but still a nice spot to take in the views.
One of the nice things about Thunder Bay, it's got so many paths and hikes, etc.
And this one, Boulevard Lake, it's actually such a cool one.
I'm going to show you now.
I'm going to walk over a water, a hydro dam.
And it's actually also got a beach here for the kids.
And it's got parks, etc.
And it's a really nice walk.
And yeah, I think it's right in the heart of Thunder Bay.
So, okay, let me continue and I'll show you.
Kakabeka Falls was next.
And man, that place is powerful.
The falls were roaring, but there were still huge chunks of ice hanging off the cliffs.
It looked like the water was crashing through frozen sculptures.
Super cool contrast with all that ice and rushing water.
Then I went to the Terry Fox Memorial.
It's way up on this hill and the view over the lake is amazing.
With the snow still on the ground and everything so quiet, it just hit harder.
You really feel the weight of history standing there.
Later on, I checked out downtown Thunder Bay.
It's small, but has a cool vibe.
Some old school buildings, murals, local shops and a few good cafes.
To wrap things up, I hit Hillcrest Lookout Point right before sunset.
It was freezing up there, but the view was worth it.
You can see the whole city, the lake and the Sleeping Giant all in one shot.
So yeah, even in early April, with everything still half frozen,
Thunder Bay's got something going on.
If you're into quiet, chill adventures and don't mind the cold, it's worth the trip.
