I'm in Denver Colorado with Art of the yard, a pond builder, garden designer and artist. Shane knows exactly how to build a proper pond - garden and takes us into his garden and pond, which is full of beautiful koi from Japan. This is how it should look like!
Hey guys, we're back.
We're back at Shaney's place, actually.
We're still in Denver, Colorado, again with the Rocky Mountains on the back.
And today there are a lot of people here at this pond and we are getting a private tour.
Before we start, I want to thank you for this hat.
It's a really cool one.
Absolutely.
I love it.
I love that it's the color that you like.
Beautiful place.
I like this.
This water feature is, and we're not even talking about the koi because there's some
nice koi in here.
Yeah.
And that was, you know, the main focus when we moved here is we wanted a place for our
koi pond.
Yeah.
So that was obviously the entire start of it, you know, and everything was going to
be designed off of where the koi pond went in.
So the first aspect that I really wanted to put into place was this sunken patio.
Because it was so important to me to be able to get close to the koi.
Plus with the patio down below like this, my daughter can go up to the edge of the pond
and we don't have to worry about her falling in.
So it has a couple benefits, even though she still tries to get in there every day.
So we've got some of our team here, you know, and we always like to have them here, have
them be a part of it and be able to come and enjoy and see what they do and see where the
love and the passion comes from.
So Mike actually helped building and designing the pond we did in the previous episode.
Correct.
Yeah.
So he was the foreman in charge of that project up there in the spring.
So this pond is about six feet deep.
It's 18,000 gallons.
I have around 40 koi in here.
We've got two bottom drains, skimmer on both sides.
We've got an Owasa pump system.
We've got the ProfiClear filter.
Yeah, and this is my kind of peaceful place to come and relax and enjoy the pond here
on this natural bench.
This is beautiful.
Every stone here, you can walk on, jump on, do whatever you want.
Nothing's going to move or shift on you.
This is the Karate Kid.
Yeah, Karate Kid Rock.
So yeah, you can go ahead and go out there on the end of it.
It's not going to move on you.
If I fall in, then it's actually really cool.
Would be good content though, if I drop in.
Yeah, absolutely.
This is cool.
Beautiful.
So then we have this amazing waterfall.
And when we came in, I probably, I don't know if you have it good on camera.
So when we came in, this water feature has actually, the water comes out and then it
has like two different ways it comes from and then it ends up together on that very
big rock there.
Yeah, and we actually have, there's three separate locations that water actually comes
out of.
So on the left, the actual, the skimmer from the other side of the pond goes to the left
hand side.
And then this skimmer here feeds the main fall up at the top.
And then the ProfiClear actually feeds in about halfway down the waterfall.
And what we did is we took a fast fall and we flipped it upside down.
No way.
Yep.
Plumbed it all in the back.
And so the water just, gravity feeds into it and percolates right out the front of that
fast fall.
That's cool.
Yeah, I really would like to see that.
Yeah, come on back and you can see some of the filtration here.
All of this vegetation.
And that's what we wanted to do.
You know, we're in the city here.
So we wanted this vegetation and everything too.
She wants to be on camera.
That's okay.
Can you say hi?
Hi.
Do you like the koi?
Yeah.
Which one is your favorite?
The baby koi.
Do you have baby koi or the beni koi?
Baby koi.
Yeah.
I would like them as well.
That's what we wanted to do.
Create that environment where you could come out, entertain, sit down and enjoy.
You know, so we've got the upper patio where you can really have a lot of people and entertain.
But then that lower sunken patio is where you can be intimate with the fish.
Other fast fall is actually right underneath the bowl.
So it's flipped upside down and right underneath the rocks there.
Oh, wow.
So you can't even tell it's there.
No, that's great.
That's really cool.
Oh, watch out.
She already knows some of the koi and calls them by name and loves to hand feed them.
That's good.
I mean, it's good to get kids and new generations involved in the industry to keep it going for
generation to generation.
Absolutely.
In the end, that's what we're promoting it for as well.
Yeah.
And what I love about it is, you know, in today's age, you know, everybody's on their
tablet, their phone.
We don't even turn on the TV.
You know, we just come out here as a family, enjoy this area and enjoy being together.
So let's go to the koi guys and talk about these amazing fish that are in there.
Thank you so much.
Are you joining us to the koi?
You ready?
You want to go feed Aurora?
OK, guys, let's go feed the koi.
So in this garden, there's actually some really cool features.
You might see it in the back.
There is a table where you have water and fire.
So all the different elements are here in the garden.
Hey, guys.
Hey.
Are you ready to feed the koi?
Yeah.
OK, cool.
Let's do it.
Oh, there's some big koi in here.
Thank you so much.
I appreciate that.
Everyone takes a bit.
Yeah.
There you go.
I'll give a little koi feed going.
They come up.
Yeah, they do.
They're really happy.
Oh, yeah.
So what was your first koi?
Here, the Deutz Ochiba was the first one, and this came out of Nishiki koi.
And it was funny because we actually got a little ambitious and ordered it before the
pond was 100 percent complete.
So we got everything filled, everything good to go, and got them here, and it's done great.
Is it still your favorite one?
Probably not my favorite anymore.
The big Sanke is probably my favorite koi in the pond here.
When I came here and entered the garden, all the fish, again, looked very healthy, but
the Sumi, the black.
And we've got, our water's a little hard here, so the Sumi really pops.
Actually the same like in the Netherlands.
I really like the Ginren Showa.
Yeah.
Beautiful fish.
Love it.
So there are 40 koi in here.
Yes.
Are you planning to get more in there?
Yeah, absolutely.
We're going to clear a few of them that aren't our favorites, and then I'm actually going
to Japan in October, so very excited to bring some koi back.
Is it your first time to Japan?
Yes.
Oh, that's really cool.
When did you actually start with keeping koi, and building the ponds, and have...
Gotcha.
Good.
So this will be probably the intro of the video, Ivo got wet by koi.
And this happens all the time to me.
That's the best part of having this sunken patio, you're right here, get to experience
them.
Got to soak it in through the skin.
Did you pick it up?
No, it just...
It got him?
Just got him.
Oh yeah, we filmed this, of course.
Well, we're back.
Let's go back to Shane and the koi pond.
Yeah, so my dad was a police officer, and he built our first pond when I was about three
years old.
So that really grew my love, my passion.
And then I've just been doing koi ever since.
I started in the actual industry when I was 14 years old.
Heath and I both worked at a nursery, and we ran the pond department, sold fish, plants,
all the products.
And it was great because Frane was our sales rep back then, so we've known him for a long
time.
I want to show you guys something.
Did you make it yourself?
Yeah, so this was a custom designed table.
Okay, so we're going to show you guys, we're going to show you this table.
There's a big surprise in here.
So the fact that this is already very interesting and cool.
I mean, if you're sitting here with friends, you have literally the water running through
the table.
It's really cool.
Yeah.
But you have an extra feature.
Yeah, and the water flows off of both sides, and we've got one single basin that goes all
the way under the table.
So it's one pump that runs all of that.
And I'll plug in the igniter here.
This is great because this is what keeps it safe.
If the gas were to blow out or get put out by the water, there's a safety feature in
here.
So it actually shuts the gas off.
So you're not just going to keep running gas into the air and cause an issue down the road.
That's really, really smart.
This is really cool.
Yeah.
We talked about it, we spoke about it in the previous episode, the winters could be quite
harsh here.
So how nice is it, like just in pre-spring or in the autumn, you can sit here and enjoy
with your family or friends, enjoy your fish, the water feature, and of course, these pretty
nice things.
And that's the great part is, you know, we, yeah, and our summer nights are so cool too
because all of that air is coming off of the mountains.
So it really cools down nice in the evening time.
So that way you can put on the fire and really sit out and enjoy it.
Love it.
All right.
Thank you so much for having me here.
We're going to have some barbecue.
Thank you so much guys for watching.
