SpaceX Ramped Up for First Starship Lunar Crewed Landing with New Legs Technique…
Bringing humans back to the Moon! That is the greatest goal for SpaceX and the United States. Time is short, and the preparations now underway are vital.
From advancing Starship to building systems for long missions, every step is part of a roadmap leading back to the lunar surface. These are not just milestones, but the foundation of one of humanity’s boldest undertakings.
So how will SpaceX prepare, and why are these steps so critical? Let’s find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
SpaceX Ramped Up for First Starship Lunar Crewed Landing with New Legs Technique…
We are now in the second half of 2025, which means SpaceX has just two years left to prepare for what could be the most historic human landing mission in more than fifty years. The countdown toward the Artemis III mission is ticking, and with it comes a mix of anticipation, pressure, and skepticism. Many experts and space enthusiasts question whether SpaceX can truly deliver such a complex system within this short timeframe. Yet, leaders like Gwynne Shotwell remain confident that Starship will meet the schedule. That confidence is grounded in a roadmap of carefully planned steps and preparations that SpaceX is actively pursuing.
At the center of these preparations lies the Starship Human Landing System, often referred to as Starship HLS. This is the vehicle that will carry astronauts down to the lunar surface and then return them to orbit in one of the most significant achievements since the Apollo era. Without a functional HLS, the Artemis III mission simply cannot happen. That is why Starship HLS is the most important milestone for SpaceX, and its development is being watched more closely than any other element of the Starship program.

To meet NASA’s requirements, SpaceX must unveil at least two HLS prototypes next year. One prototype will be used for an uncrewed demonstration landing, which is scheduled for late 2026. This demo will need to prove that Starship can safely descend, land, and operate on the Moon without astronauts on board. The second prototype will then be used for the actual crewed mission. At this stage, progress is still largely behind the scenes. Observers at Starbase have only caught glimpses of hardware such as demo airlocks, partial nosecones, and interior layouts that hint at the scale of preparation happening in the background.
