Barnacles often attach themselves to many marine animals, especially those with exoskeletons or thick layers of skin. As epibiont crustaceans, they seek out these animals to attach to and live on their bodies, where they filter-feed. In some cases, barnacle infestations end up affecting the host's health. For example, in sea turtles, excess barnacles damage their shells, as the natural glue these crustaceans use calcifies and wears down the shell, causing infections and other problems.
