Well hello and welcome to Over the Vest nurseries
on a beautiful sunny but quite breezy afternoon
in early spring. Now as you may know here on the nursery we grow a very wide
selection of outdoor garden plants, ones that are
available through a network of garden centers throughout our region
that's the northeast and mid-atlantic states of the U.S.
Lots of really good plants and if you'd like to find out more about them
can I suggest that you click and subscribe to this channel
and then as we post new videos which we're doing all the time
they will turn up in your feed and you'll get to see them almost as quickly
as we film and post them. Now lots and lots of really
interesting plants, but here in front of me
is probably one of the most eye-catching little
weeping trees, in fact I would go even further to say this is one of the
finest of the little weeping flowering trees.
This is a variety of flowering cherry called Prunus snow fountains,
absolutely gorgeous little tree that puts on a terrific show each and
every year and as you see it is particularly well named
because all of these pendulous branches that
arch from the top and hang down as you see are cascading down with lots
and lots of these beautiful pristine single white flowers that are carried in
profusion. Add to that the fact that this is a
little tree that gives a really nice kind of see-through effect
see how we're able to look right through so that if you've got a smallish sight
and you want something to kind of just be a very nice accent or
feature but you don't want to totally block out everything
you'll see that this gives you that very nice kind of
see-through effect. Then let me mention that this is a tree
that is the perfect size for the average home garden situation.
Only growing about 8 to 15 foot at its most
and then spreading out to about 6 or 8 foot wide
it really does make a lovely little tree for that situation.
Add to that the fact that it is very easy to grow
in average garden soil conditions. It does best
in a sunny location in soil that's free draining
and if you dig a good sized hole when you're planting it and that's important
dig a good generous sized hole that's about twice the width of the pot by
maybe one and a half times the depth of it.
Incorporate plenty of organic matter and remove the pot of course
but also make sure that the top of the root ball as you see
here is level with the surrounding soil and then probably water it and mulch it
too to help it retain moisture during the summertime. Then you'll find
that it will settle in and grow away really well and make a
terrific little specimen that's really going to get
everybody in your family talking and probably
visitors and neighbors too. One thing I will mention about the way we grow
these trees that's important, and that is that they go through a
special process whereby we treat the inside of the pot
to make sure that the root ball on all of these trees
comes as a nice fibrous root system. That means that when you take it home and
plant it, it gets off to a really good fast
transition, settles in and grows away well and
then in subsequent years when it puts on
plenty of lush growth you will have even thicker more
impressive flowering than these young trees are showing at the moment.
And it's not finished with that because come the
autumn time the leaves on this tree will take on nice kind of golden orange
shades through. Two, Hardy to Zone 5 and really just an
all-round terrific performer, this is Prunus Snow Fountains, an
excellent selection that was introduced in 1985
by Lake County Nurseries in Ohio. Jim Zampini, the owner there, really made a
magnificent contribution to horticulture over the years,
introduced something like 200 different selections
of plants through his lifetime and for me
this lovely little weeping tree is probably
one of the top selections to come from that very talented
and dedicated plantsman. So if you're looking for a really good
top performing little weeping flowering cherry
that's really going to put on a terrific show, this is definitely the name of the
plant you want, it's called Prunus Snow Fountains.
