In the mid-fourteenth century, an unseen killer scythed across continents, erasing as much as 50–60% of Europe. For six centuries, one question lingered: where did it truly begin? The answer emerged when archaeology met ancient DNA. Not in London or Genoa, but on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, a small trading community left a paper-thin trail—gravestones marked “pestilence” and teeth that still carried a pathogen’s whisper.

In the summer of 1886, Russian archaeologists opened. The graves belonged to a Syriac-speaking, Nestorian Christian settlement on a branch of the Silk Road. Stone markers date many burials precisely to 1338–1339—almost a decade before Europe’s first reports. The team mapped plots, copied inscriptions, and shipped selected remains to St. Petersburg, capturing a snapshot of a mortality spike in the high Tian Shan.
