The Emirates stage is set.
Arsenal against Manchester City, one of the grandest of games,
one of the greatest of rivalries in modern football.
When two tacticians collide, it is the Premier League at its most magnetic.
You didn't interview the other day when you mentioned the word revenge against Arsenal,
so is that, I know you didn't play here last year yourself, but is that on your mind today?
Yeah, always, always when you come from not just a bad year in general,
you want a bit of revenge, try to take the mood in a different way,
and of course it was 5-1, it hurts,
so we come back to try to perform well and try to win this game, yeah.
It is all set to be an afternoon of high drama in the Premier League,
and I'm very much looking forward to watching it all here inside the Emirates Stadium.
We are indeed joined by Fremey and Lucas Art.
Fremey, we were just talking off-camera, and it's 1-1.
It is.
This is your third appearance on Matchday Live, first of all,
thank you so much for being back here.
No worries, man.
Listen, last time I won, and it was a big score, I ain't gonna lie,
so I've come again to hopefully have another big score,
but I'm glad to be here, man, I'm enjoying myself.
Yeah, the atmosphere is building here in the Emirates Stadium,
in particular in the away section.
Luke, we've seen our players, they've done their final preparations,
what did you notice being here for the first time, Fintan, is there anything that stood out?
Being this close to the players is mad,
but they're proper locked in, we saw Pep before the game as well,
he's locked in some game mode, and we want to see a win, we want to see a win,
we don't want to lose the game, like I said,
I think the bigger impact from this game will be the knock-on momentum,
rather than the points themselves, if we can get the win over the line,
the impacts that'll have going forward will be invaluable.
The Emirates Stadium used to be one in which the Blues flourished,
they recorded seven wins in a row here between 2018 and 2023.
However, after losing here in successive seasons,
this has now become a much more problematic venue,
and with the Gunners Liverpool's closest challengers last season and so far this,
it is they, and not City, who are the favourites this afternoon.
That said, it would be both bold and foolish to write off City's chances,
and after a perfect start to September with two impressive victories,
the Blues arrive here full of confidence and self-belief.
This, though, is always a heavyweight clash.
So City are seeking a first win against Arsenal in six attempts,
after two defeats and three draws,
what a statement it would be if they could earn that win today.
Now Arsenal are coming forward down City's right side,
there is a man over there, but Krzysztof's pace gets him to the ball first,
he beats Calafiore to it right in front of the City fans,
and the Blues can get it away through Krzysztof.
And that is why Michael Brown, he is such a good defender.
Of course comes Diaz, Calafiore plays it in straight to Reinders,
and then Zubimendi intervenes and then City win it back with Foden.
It's a little bit scrappy, Haaland with a lovely lay-off to Reinders,
and City can attack here for the first time,
Haaland's bursting away, Reinders has got to the edge of the area,
Haaland's in the clear, and City have scored!
That is a magnificent goal!
You trace that back to the Blues winning it in their own half,
and then a little poke through to Reinders,
Reinders just took it into Arsenal territory,
got to the final third, helped it into Haaland,
and Haaland did the rest, an absolutely wonderful goal.
Haaland once again on target against Arsenal,
it's his fifth goal against them,
and the Blues lead 1-0.
And now Saliba will get it away, up it goes to Mourinho,
Mourinho on the edge of his final defensive third,
loses it, Haaland's on to it, City with an opportunity here,
Bernardo Silva, and Reinders!
Oh, it was too close to David Lyatt,
it was a chance, it was the second attempt on target in the match.
Gabriel across to the other centre-half, Saliba,
and it goes to Rice, Rice back to Saliba,
Saliba poking it through, it's still inside their own half,
lots of possession, but no progress yet,
and then a challenge by Bernardo Silva which forced an error,
and then it breaks again for Gabriel,
and Gabriel always caught them by Bernardo Silva,
and now he's booked him, he's booked Bernardo Silva
for the challenge on Gabriel, first yellow card of the game.
He glances it on, headed forward by Bernardo Silva,
Haaland cushions it, Rodri heads it,
a little bit of head tennis in the end, it's now in the deck with Rice,
and Rice wants the return, and on it goes to Mourinho,
and now it's on to Madhuayke,
Madhuayke on the edge of the City penalty area,
looking to make an angle for a tackle by Orion,
picked up though by Zoubimende, on to Timba,
into Madhuayke, Madhuayke,
ooh, that was a dangerous challenge,
and in the end pushed away brilliantly by Donnarumma,
and then Caligiuri bothers it over the top of the crossbar,
Madhuayke tries to get to the line,
and does he hit the outside of the post?
Maybe there was a piece of it from Donnarumma as well.
There's a long, long way to go in this game,
and I'm sure there'll be plenty of scares along the way,
but City have defended so far with great resolution and great discipline.
Half-time, City lead Arsenal by one goal to nil.
So Arsenal get the second half underway,
knowing that the pressure is on them to deliver.
Donnarumma can't reach it, he's blocked off,
and the cross might come in a second time,
and there's another block for City,
and Doku can stride away,
and there was a leg hanging out at him,
Doku still has the ball.
I think it was Saka who played it.
Now Haaland's got a chance,
and there's a man in the middle, Foden,
and Haaland goes alone,
and the save is good,
and the prod over the bar is a corner.
Haaland had Foden unmarked to his right,
but he went for the shot, it was blocked,
and then I think it was Ezer who came back
and almost scored an own goal,
but it's a corner.
Doku, little one-two, good play,
Doku into the penalty area,
Doku takes on his man,
Doku prods it wide,
but it'll be kept on by Bernardo Silva.
City really tidy there with a one-two,
but it was going wide,
and Bernardo kept it in play.
Can they attack?
Rijnders comes forward,
and he's just tackled,
but he breaks for Savinha,
and on to Niko,
Niko pokes it back,
City will lose it though,
and Arsenal now have the ball,
and they're coming forward,
City trying to funnel back into position.
We're in the 92nd minute here.
Some desperate legs, Ali,
some desperate legs.
Absolutely, ball over the top,
looks like it's a good one,
chance for Arsenal right at the end,
and they've equalised.
It's been turned in by Martinelli,
and finally City's wonderful resistance
has been broken.
Gabriel Martinelli,
a flick over the top
of the advancing Donnarumma,
and it's 1-1.
Thump forward,
up goes Guardiola,
it's above him,
Guardiola with the challenge,
Joqueres behind him,
and the referee sounds the whistle,
and City,
well, I think at the start of play,
you probably would have said,
that's not a bad point here at the Emirates.
The way the game unfolded,
and the gutsy way that City defended,
they almost got themselves the win.
Haaland's ninth-minute goal,
and then a huge rear-guard action from the Blues.
It took a sensational goal
to completely break City down.
Beautiful ball in from Mesut,
finished off by Martinelli,
a £100 million goal in its creation,
and it's the goal that has denied City the win,
and it is a very, very impressive draw.
The Blues are just building up ahead of steam
at the right time of the season.
Just let's see if we can turn this kind of performance
into a continuing run of results.
The final score at the Emirates,
Arsenal 1-1 City.
