Antigua is a MUST see for anyone visiting Guatemala. Not just because it is a World Heritage Site, but because it is one of the coolest wee* cities on the planet.
Hi, I'm Ben. Meet Alaska, the Caribbean explorer and his capito, our Chilean bug.
For the next few years, this is our house. The world is our garden and you are our family.
We don't know the time of day or where we'll wake up tomorrow. All we know is we're on the
ride of our lives, most of the time. So join us and see what unfolds on this epic adventure.
It's the rainy season for you. Sometimes it turns day into night. The sun shined a few minutes ago.
Sometimes the rain gets so bad that we have to slow right down to like pretty much walking pace.
Pretty difficult driving conditions. A few people coming off the road. Water everywhere.
Beautiful Antigua, a World Heritage Site for obvious reasons.
With amazing colonial buildings, churches lining the streets,
and a picture-perfect backdrop, this city is a must-see for everyone visiting Guatemala.
Antigua is delicious. You are guaranteed to find your favorite dishes from back home
and also to taste Guatemalan cuisine at its most traditional or experimental.
Chorizo, arroz, pasta, and my drink is a maica, a piña, and 20 quetzales.
Our days were spent playing tourist, walking, exploring, and tasting.
Without fail, every afternoon the rain clouds gathered,
making for a quick dash back to Compito. With no escaping, it got rather cozy.
Are you watching me?
We do, son.
I got a little dribble on the ground, eh?
Using the Swiss toilet?
Don't!
We did try and get out of the van for a while, but...
We just checked into a hostel a couple of days away from the van.
We had to close the window and it fell apart.
So now we can't close the van or we can't stay in the hostel.
Somehow we're going to have to find a new window-winder mechanism for the second time.
Many flock here for the Spanish schools and postcard views.
But what intrigued us the most were the people with beautiful traditional clothing.
The sad thing is this is all but gone with the men in Antigua.
And now it's starting to fade with the girls too.
For a while yet, Antigua has the right mixture.
A modern city steeped in tradition that will ensure a steady trail of tourists long into the future.
Next time on Hasta Alaska,
we head lakeside to take over an abandoned house and get friendly with the local lawn.
We injure ourselves so much that we don't want to leave.
And then we can't.
Come on, move, move, move, move, move.
I need some help and I feel what's wrong.
