SpaceX gradually Ditches Falcon Heavy from Rocket Fleet! Here’s What They’re Doing…
Starship has launched more frequently and has just achieved another success.
Falcon 9 has launched countless times this year and continues to break records at an incredible pace.
But wait, did SpaceX forget something?
There have been no Falcon Heavy flights so far this year.
It may seem unusual, but perhaps SpaceX has not forgotten at all. Instead, their actions suggest they may be gradually moving away from Falcon Heavy, with several recent decisions pointing in that direction.
So, is the end truly coming for Falcon Heavy?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
SpaceX gradually Ditches Falcon Heavy from Rocket Fleet! Here’s What They’re Doing…
It has now been over eleven months, nearly a full year, since the last Falcon Heavy mission. That mission was the launch of NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft on October 14, 2024. In other words, we have not seen a Falcon Heavy flight at all this year.
Currently, the rocket is scheduled for a mission sometime in December. Known as Griffin, the mission is a joint effort between NASA and Astrobotic under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. The Griffin lander, carrying NASA’s payloads, is designed to touch down near the south pole of the Moon. Yet, even with the schedule in place, updates regarding the payloads remain limited. On SpaceX’s side, we know the core booster B1091 has been assigned for this mission. This booster already proved itself in early August during a Falcon 9 launch that supported Amazon’s Kuiper satellite deployment. However, despite preparations, it is not possible at this time to say with certainty whether the Falcon Heavy will indeed fly before the year comes to a close.

Even if it does launch, 2025 will still mark a significant decline for Falcon Heavy. Since its debut in 2018, the rocket gradually gained momentum, culminating in 2023 with a record-setting five launches. Many believed that trend would continue, but the opposite has happened. In 2024, Falcon Heavy flew just twice, and now, 2025 may end with only a single mission.
Signs of a longer-term decline are also emerging. SpaceX has officially retired Landing Zone 1, which was frequently used to recover Falcon Heavy’s side boosters. Without it, options for landings are more limited. There is some construction underway near SLC-40, which could eventually serve as a new landing area, but its readiness remains uncertain. Unless SpaceX shifts to recovering both side boosters on droneships, Falcon Heavy operations could face growing logistical hurdles.
