The Costco Auto Example
Let’s start with Costco. People trust Costco because after all the store environment is friendly and inviting. You get bulk deals, fair return policies, and no-nonsense shopping inside the warehouse. So naturally, customers assume the Costco Auto Program works the same way. But sadly, it doesn’t. Costco doesn’t sell the cars—you’re still buying from the dealer. Costco just connects you with a “preferred” dealer and promises you a “discounted price.”
When Kevin did a live interview with a Costco Auto Program manager, even he admitted: Costco doesn’t control the finance office outcome. They don’t stop dealers from packing contracts with add-ons. They don’t police the trade-in process. And they don’t prevent a dealer from making thousands of dollars in hidden back-end profit. It’s all od the worst stuff that happens! All Costco guarantees is that the starting price is discounted. Everything else? That’s all still a free-for-all and as you’ve heard us say many times, the real money is made AFTER the price is negotiated.
And that’s the key weakness of EVERY attempt at “screened or trusted dealers.” A Preferred or Trusted Dealer Network can attempt to set the price of the car, but they can’t control the tricks behind the curtain. Finance markups, bogus fees, inflated add-ons—that’s where the real dealer profit comes from. Costco admitted as much: their network doesn’t do a thing to stop the dealer from doing business the way they always do.
🎭 Why Preferred Dealer Networks Sound Good But Fail
So why do these networks keep popping up if they don’t work? Because they sound good. Who wouldn’t want a “short-cut” to a good deal? But the fatal flaw is this: Preferred Dealer Networks still rely on the very dealers who profit from ripping you off.
Exactly. You can’t take a system built on deception and suddenly make it honest just by slapping a “preferred” or “trusted” label on a few stores. The culture doesn’t change. The people don’t change. The profit goals don’t change. The only thing that changes is the marketing pitch. And that believing that marketing pitch can seriously burn you.
