Some dogs are prone to waxy discharge in their ears, especially breeds with pendulous (long and floppy) ears or very hairy ear canals. Dog ear cleaning can keep their ears working as they should, making infections, irritation, and discomfort less likely.

Not every dog needs ear cleaning.
We'd only recommend cleaning if your vet has said
your dog's ears are prone to dirt and wax buildup
and that cleaning would help.
And if there are any signs of infection,
redness, swelling, bad smells, unusual discharge,
or if there's ear mites, cleaning won't do the trick.
It's best to see your vet.
For ear cleaning, you'll need vet-approved ear cleaner,
avoid household products, cotton balls or gauze,
but not cotton buds.
These might hurt your dog's eardrum.
An old towel and treats, at least a few.
Step one, pick the right time.
Choose a relaxed moment, maybe after a walk.
A helper who can gently hold your dog
can make things easier.
Step two, warn the ear cleaner.
Cold liquid can be a shock,
so let it warm up to room temperature first.
Step three, wash your hands.
Get your hands nice and clean,
even if you'll be wearing gloves.
Step four, apply the cleaner.
Hold the ear up, apply a few drops,
and don't insert the nozzle too far.
Step five, massage the ear base.
Gently massage for 20 to 30 seconds.
A squelching sound means it's working.
Step six, let your dog shake.
Let them shake out the loosened debris.
Use your cotton balls or gauze
to wipe out anything that's still in there,
again, without going deep.
And use your towel to clean up
anything that's been splattered.
Step seven, reward your dog.
Be sure to give your dog a treat
before repeating for the other ear.
Like most dog hygiene,
ear cleaning sounds like more effort than it is.
And now, your dog's ears are much less likely
to become infected or get ear mites.
