Whale watching in San Diego, California with Legacy Whale Watching Tours.
You can choose different times to go during the day with the tour group,
morning or afternoon. We boarded our vessel in the morning at the docks near Mission Bay
and got ready to head out. The boat is very large, it has a snack bar,
bathrooms, seating area, and upper and lower decks.
They ask before you get on if you need seasickness medicine at the bait and taco shop
or if you want a bracelet instead. We are whale watching. A nice big boat. San Diego Coast.
I have this thing, it makes me twitch, but it works really really well. It's like,
it puts like an electric pulse and it makes it so you don't get seasick,
but it also makes it so your thumbs don't work right. Let's see if we see any whales today. I
think we'll probably see something. I'll try to get it with the other camera so you guys can see
up close. On different days the surf may be higher or lower depending on the weather,
so be prepared for anything. We went 17 miles out from the harbor and ran into a pack of dolphins.
All the other boating companies watch for whales and inform boats going out where the whales are
so they do not miss the opportunity to spot one. Usually bait balls are a good place to start.
These are rough spots stirred up by very small fish that can be seen on the surface of the water
in large circles. The first animals to find these bait balls are predators, such as sharks or
dolphins. The easiest way to spot a whale is to look for the water sprouting into the air
from their blowhole. Once located, we started to follow it from a distance.
Gray whale season is between December to April. Blue and humpback whales are more common between
mid-June and September. Today we were following a young juvenile whale around.
This whale seemed to be everywhere at once and was a little harder to follow,
but our captain did a great job keeping up with it.
One of the hardest things to catch while whale watching are breaches. This is when the whale
launches fully out of the water and crashes back into the ocean. It is said to equal running a
marathon for a human being energy-wise.
Luckily today was our special day to catch a breach.
Not only did this whale breach once, but twice for us. It was a very special moment to see.
The surge of power and a splash of raw majesty. In those moments, the ocean's secret was revealed.
A pure, breathtaking wonder. After we witnessed the awe of the ocean,
we moved over to catch some dolphins in action.
San Diego, California is known to have some of the highest concentrations in the world for the
common dolphin. When out boating, anyone may get lucky to come across a pod of a couple hundred
to a thousand dolphins. These beautiful creatures were feeding on the massive bait ball
and coming over to play alongside the boat.
Witnessing these creatures again, but on a larger boat was even more incredible
because we could see more of them in the water. Being on a sailboat limits what we can actually
see, but with Legacy, we were able to take in the full glory of the pod above the water.
Seeing it today on such a gorgeous day here in San Diego, especially with a pod of dolphins,
was quite incredible. Megan, are you seasick? No, I'm not actually.
We've been in pretty rough seas, haven't we? Yeah, it's actually been really,
really rough today. I mean, I feel a little off, but not like normal. It's a lot better.
This thing is crazy though. It's on level five. It looks like it's beeping. Yeah, they put it on
the highest. Relief band. So that's kind of neat. It hurts a little bit, but it's honestly worth it.
It's got to be on super tight. After the gorgeous sunny day out on the water we headed in, the
temperature when we went today was around 68 degrees. It was early April when we went and
packed for a frigid wind and cloudy weather, but we got really lucky today. Coming in,
we could take in all of the coastline around Ocean Beach and see the pier from a different
perspective. I encourage anyone who lives in San Diego and is looking for something fun to do to
give whale watching a try. It really gets you out of the house and puts you up close with the ocean
