The Truth About Recall Speed: Why Rewarding Fast Responses Doesn’t Guarantee Faster Recalls
In this quick but important video, I challenge one of the most common and misleading bits of advice you’ll hear in dog training—particularly around recall. The idea that “if you only reward the fastest responses, then only fast responses will occur” sounds tidy in theory… but in reality, it’s nonsense.
Why? Because there’s no consistent way to know at what speed or distance your dog is responding each time, and no way to ensure you’re only reinforcing the “fastest” version of their recall. If the logic were true, your dog’s recall would eventually become faster and faster until they were running at supersonic speed—clearly not possible. This video highlights why chasing speed alone misses the point, and how nuance, clarity, and communication matter far more than blunt reward schedules.
If you’re tired of inconsistent recalls, frustrated by selective listening, or confused by conflicting advice, my Skills4Life online training programme might be the clarity you’ve been looking for. It’s not about gimmicks or performance—it’s about understanding how your dog learns and how to build reliable behaviour in the real world.
