City cars, micro cars, mini EVs. Call them what you want, there's a fascinating amount of them
in existence around the globe. But will they replace regular cars? In this video we'll compare
25 of them to see if there is any danger of one showing up in a driveway near you soon.
So buckle up because first we have the Henry Otto Mini Car, a quirky little electric vehicle that
has embraced the small and mighty philosophy with a delightful sense of humor. This compact
electric car boasts a range of 93 miles per charge, which means you could theoretically
zip around town without worrying about finding a charging station. Plus with its sporty chassis
and promise of comfortable leg space, the mini car appears to be trying to prove that small cars can
indeed be both practical and somewhat stylish. It's kind of like the automotive equivalent of
a chihuahua wearing a leather jacket, small but with an attitude. Next, buckle up for another
quirky ride, the Wink Motors Mini Car. Their neighborhood electric vehicles, or NEVs, are
fully street-legal cars that max out at a zippy 28 miles per hour and are meant for streets with
lower posted speed limits. These adorable little machines come in several models starting at a
wallet-friendly $8,995 for the base Sprout, which weighs a mere 761 pounds. Some models even come
with solar panels because why not add a touch of eco-chic to your miniature mobility solution?
The interiors are surprisingly car-like with features like air conditioning, electric windows,
backup cameras, and infotainment screens crammed into a vehicle smaller than most walk-in closets.
The Citroën Ami is another standout in the world of affordable mini electric cars.
This tiny urban runabout measuring just 94 inches long and 60 inches tall comes with a price tag
that's hard to beat. In Europe, the Ami costs around $6,000 making it one of the most budget-friendly
electric vehicles on the market. It's so affordable that it might even cost less than upgrading to the
latest high-end laptop. The Ami is powered by a 5.5 kilowatt hour battery pack and a 6 kilowatt
electric motor offering a range of about 44 miles and a top speed of 28 miles per hour.
While these specs might seem modest, they're perfectly suited for urban environments where
maneuverability and ease of parking are key. In some European countries, the Ami is even
classified as a quadricycle allowing it to be driven by 14-year-olds without a full driver's
license. The Fiat Topolino is an upgraded version of the Ami that's also making waves in the European
market. This tiny urban runabout measuring just 100 inches in length is priced at a wallet-friendly
€9,890 in Italy or about $11,000. Fiat also offers a tempting leasing option of about $40
a month over 48 months with a down payment payment equivalent to $2,759. The Topolino
packs an electric motor and a 5.5 kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery.
Also in China, the Sherry QQ Ice Cream is making waves as an incredibly affordable mini EV.
This charming little car starts at just 29,900 RMB or roughly $4,180 US dollars.
The QQ Ice Cream's affordability doesn't stop at its base model with higher trim still
maintaining a competitive edge at around 43,900 RMB or about $6,140 US dollars.
With a range of up to 127 miles on a single charge, this pint-sized EV offers practical
city mobility at a fraction of the cost of traditional electric vehicles. Its compact
dimensions measuring just under 10 feet long make it perfect for tight city streets and squeezing
into those hard-to-find parking spots, all while potentially keeping your wallet happy.
The Sherry EQ1 Little Ant is another incredibly affordable mini electric vehicle.
As of January 2025, the latest price range of the Sherry EQ1 is between 60,000 to 75,000 RMB
or $8,400 to $10,400. The Little Ant's affordability is further emphasized when
compared to its earlier iterations, which cost $2,000 more. Further emphasizing its mini stature,
this compact EV measures about 10.5 feet in length, 5.5 feet in width and 5.1 feet in height
with a wheelbase of about 7 feet. And despite its low price, the Little Ant doesn't skimp on
features, offering various trims and color options to appeal to different consumer preferences.
The Latin Mango is a charming mini electric vehicle that starts at just 29,800 Yen or $4,200
US dollars. This makes it one of the most affordable electric vehicles available globally.
Despite its small size, measuring just 142 inches long, 63 inches wide and 75 inches tall,
the Latin Mango can seat up to four passengers. The top-tier model boasts an impressive 186 miles
on a single charge. It also comes with a 9-inch central control screen, supports 5G connectivity
and even offers AR navigation. This mini vehicle also includes a slew of other
options you'd find on regular cars. Not bad for $4,200. But if that's not good enough,
the Lingbao Uni EV is priced between 27,000 to 40,000 Yen, which translates to approximately
$3,800 to $5,600. The Uni EV comes in different models with varying ranges from 87 miles to 125
miles while offering four seats and a top speed of 62 miles per hour.
Both models feature a rear-wheel drive system and a 20-kilowatt motor.
It comes equipped with a 7-inch dashboard display, air conditioning and even a battery preheating
system. The vehicle even includes modern safety features like ABS, rear radar and a reverse camera.
Launched in the Chinese market in May 2023, this tiny SUV is priced starting at just 79,800 Yen,
or up all the way to $11,290 US dollars. The Yep is a product of SEICGM Wuling,
a joint venture between Chinese automakers and America's General Motors, making it a surprising
distant relative of the Chevy Suburban. This boxy little EV measures just over 11 feet long,
5.5 feet wide and 5.7 feet tall with a wheelbase of 6.9 feet,
making it more than 18 inches shorter than a Mitsubishi Mirage.
Also out of China, the Geely Geom Panda EV is a cute and boxy little electric vehicle with a
starting price of 39,900 Yuan, or about $5,500 US dollars. Under its diminutive hood,
the Geom Panda EV also packs a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 40 horsepower.
This setup allows for a CLT C-rated range of 124 miles. Another one of the Panda EV's standout
features is its DC fast charging capability that can juice up the battery from 30% to 80%
in just 30 minutes. Inside, the Panda EV offers seating for 4 passengers in a quirky,
asymmetrical interior design that might cater to younger drivers. It also features a dual-spoke
steering wheel, a 9.2-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch central touchscreen.
The Strom R3 is a 3-wheeled, 2-seater reverse trike priced at 4.5 lakh rupees, or $5,400.
Powering the R3 is a 15-kilowatt AC induction motor producing 20 horsepower and 90 pound-feet
of torque. And here's one minicar already making its way to driveways in India and beyond. As seen
on Autocar India, the Nano EV comes with a 17.1-kilowatt-hour battery, promising about
a 90-mile range. And if that may seem paltry, most people don't drive over 90 miles a day,
so if you plug it in when you get home, like you would a smartphone,
you'll start every day with 90 miles of juice.
The Toyota C-Plus Pod is a charming, tiny 2-seater measuring just 98 inches long,
50 inches wide and 61 inches tall. Initially available only to corporate and municipal
customers, Toyota expanded sales to the general public in Japan in December 2021.
Another way to save a few bucks on a new EV is with the GEM electric low-speed vehicles.
These street-legal minicars are designed for local transport on roads with speed
limits of 35 miles per hour or less, making them perfect for urban and suburban environments.
The GEM E4, a four-passenger model, stands out with its 135-inch length and 25 miles per hour
top speed, offering a range of up to 90 miles depending on the battery type.
In North America, where GEM has sold over 50,000 units since 1998, yes, you heard that right,
these vehicles have become increasingly popular for short trips and campus transportation.
GEM vehicles offer a different style, more cost-effective alternative to traditional cars.
With an estimated operating cost of practically nothing based on average
U.S. electricity prices, with features like LED lighting, adjustable seats and power steering,
GEM cars provide a comfortable and safe driving experience.
The Eli Zero is an exciting new entrant in the affordable U.S. mini electric car market.
This compact urban EV starts at just $11,990,
making it significantly cheaper than the average electric vehicle.
The Zero comes with two battery options, an 8 or 12-kilowatt-hour pack,
offering ranges of 60 or 90 miles respectively. This tiny two-seater is powered by a 6-kilowatt
rear-wheel-drive electric motor and even features regenerative braking to extend its range.
The Unity One was a promising compact three-seater EV featuring a unique design
centered around a central driving position with two passenger seats in the back.
Designed to offer two battery options, a 12-kilowatt-hour and a larger 24-kilowatt-hour
pack extending the range to 186 miles. In terms of performance, the Unity One was
one of the fastest mini EVs on the block with a 0 to 30 time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 75
miles per hour. It even featured DC fast charging that could add 62 miles of range in just 10
minutes using a 50-kilowatt charger. However, despite the ambitious plans and innovative
design, Unity struggled to secure funding to transition from a startup to a full-fledged
automotive business, a situation exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. Unfortunately, Unity filed
for bankruptcy in April 2022 before they could bring the One to full production.
The Honda Nu-V is a fascinating mini concept car that showcases Honda's vision for the future of
urban mobility. This compact EV was designed to address the issue of privately-owned cars
sitting idle 96% of the time. You see, the Nu-V features a unique automated ride-sharing feature
that allows it to pick up and drop off passengers when the owner isn't using it, potentially
generating income for its owner. Another intriguing aspect of the Nu-V is its AI system called HANA,
which can learn from the driver's emotions and pass decisions to make personalized
recommendations. It also boasts an innovative energy management system that can sell excess
power back to the electric grid during peak demand times. The compact two-seater even
includes a built-in electric skateboard for last mile transit. And speaking of commitment,
the XEV Yoyo is a charming pint-sized wonder designed in Italy and manufactured in China.
The Yoyo is powered by a 20-horsepower electric motor and a range of up to 93 miles on a single
charge of its 10.3 kilowatt-hour battery. But if you weren't in the mood for charging,
one of the Yoyo's standout features is its battery swapping system,
which allows drivers to quickly exchange depleted batteries for fresh ones.
Plus, this little dynamo can reach a top speed of 50 miles per hour,
more than sufficient for zipping around city streets with lower posted speed limits.
Inside, you'll find a simple yet functional interior that comfortably seats two adults
and offers a surprisingly spacious 180-liter trunk. As of January 2025, the XEV Yoyo is
priced at approximately 13,000 euros in Europe, which translates to about 14,000 USD. It's
currently for sale at over 200 sales outlets across Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal,
and the Netherlands, with actual prices varying slightly depending on the specific market and trim
level. And back in the US market, the Candy K23 is a Chinese-made hatchback reminiscent of a small
crossover that offers a non-mini EV range of 188 miles per charge. Plus, with its 41.4 kilowatt-hour
battery pack, the K23 can reach a top speed of 70 miles per hour, making it suitable for both
city driving and highway trips. As of early 2025, the Candy K23 is priced at $27,499 in the United
States, but it becomes even more attractive when factoring in the $7,500 federal tax credit,
bringing the effective price down to just $19,999 for eligible buyers.
And also from Candy, this is the miniaturized electric UTV known simply as the Cowboy.
This rugged mini UTV is designed for both work and play, featuring dual AC electric motors that
deliver an impressive 10 kilowatts of power. The Cowboy E10K boasts a top speed of 40 miles per
hour and a maximum driving range of 60 miles on a single charge of its 11.52 kilowatt-hour lithium
battery. Priced at $13,999, it comes equipped with standard features including a roof,
windshield, doors, electric dump bed, and a 3,500-pound winch.
The vehicle's compact dimensions, 112 inches long by 63 inches wide, ensure it can fit anywhere,
while its 441-pound cargo bed capacity and 2,500-pound towing capacity make it a capable
workhorse around your property. And now, shifting gears from the rugged Candy Cowboy,
let's explore an innovative Polish-engineered marvel that combines the stability of a car
with the agility of a motorcycle. The Trigo is a shape-shifting electric quadricycle.
Yes, there's two wheels in the back that boasts a revolutionary variable chassis geometry.
In its cruise mode, the vehicle measures just 58 inches wide,
providing car-like stability at higher speeds.
But here's where it gets interesting. At the push of a button, the Trigo transforms
into maneuvering mode, pulling its front wheels inward to achieve a slim width of just 34 inches
wide. This narrow profile allows it to weave through traffic jams and squeeze into tight
parking spots with ease. Adding to its uniqueness, the Trigo features a tilting
mechanism that leans the vehicle into corners by up to 20 degrees.
It's even equipped with modern features like a yoke steering wheel, side-view cameras,
and a digital instrument cluster. And the vehicle's drive-by-wire steering system not
only reduces the number of moving parts, but also makes it ready for potential autonomous
driving applications. And now, let's take a look at a unique offering from Spain,
the Comarth Crossover Sport. This 100% electric vehicle is a testament to Comarth's 15 years
of experience in designing and manufacturing electric vehicles. The Comarth Crossover Sport
offers impressive versatility with over 30 configurations available, including the CO
cargo for daily tasks like merchandise transportation and maintenance, and CO touring
for passenger transport in private areas and tourist resorts. While specific performance
details for the Crossover Sport aren't available, Comarth boasts zero emissions and zero noise,
making it ideal for use in various settings including industrial areas, warehouses, and airports.
And now, let's turn our attention to the Mini Kia PV1, the smallest member of Kia's innovative
platform beyond vehicle lineup. Unveiled at CES, this compact electric vehicle is designed to
tackle the challenges of urbanization, e-commerce, and the gig economy. With its compact dimensions
of 10.5 feet long by 5.5 feet wide, the PV1 is perfectly suited for tight city streets.
One of the PV1's biggest standout features is its incredible maneuverability. It can literally
spin in place, rotate with its rear wheels fixed, and even move diagonally thanks to
independent steering on all four wheels. For businesses focused on deliveries, the PV1 reduces
physical strain during loading and unloading, while it even has software that can suggest the
best driving routes. While specific performance details and pricing are yet to be announced,
the PV1 is expected to be priced around $35,000. And now, let's zoom in on the Massimo Electric
e-Spider 72-volt trike, a futuristic three-wheeled mini EV powered by a 3,000-watt mid-drive motor
and paired with a 72-volt, 50-amp-hour lithium battery.
This potent combination allows for a top speed of 50 miles per hour.
But how small is it? Well, measuring 108 inches long, 66 inches wide, and 38 inches high,
the e-Spider strikes a balance between compact design and road presence. And despite its
substantial dry weight of 652 pounds, it can carry an additional 450 pounds, making it practical for
both solo and duo rides. It's generally available for around $7,000. This positions it as an
affordable entry point into the world of mini EVs. And now, let's shift gears to a quirky and
innovative mini EV from France, the Kilo La Bagnole. This tiny electric off-roader combines
retro charm with modern eco-friendly technology, making it quite the unique entry.
The La Bagnole, which roughly translates to jalopy in French, is a lightweight two-seater
that looks like a miniature cross between a UTV and a classic Jeep CJ5. With its steel chassis
weighing just 624 pounds, it embodies Kilo's less is more philosophy. It can accelerate from 0 to
25 in just 4 seconds, and its licensed model features a 50 mile per hour top speed. As of now,
the Kilo La Bagnole is priced starting at 10,800 euros, or $11,700. And with its minimalist design,
off-road capabilities, and eco-friendly credentials, the Kilo La Bagnole represents
a fun option for those seeking an unconventional mini electric vehicle.
But what do you think? Will any of these mini EVs show up in a driveway near you soon?
