Russia is in BIG TROUBLE, Even Can't Build Rocket Engines...
Something terrible is happening with Russia's space! Roscosmos, once a powerhouse rivaling NASA, is now sliding into decline. Sanctions have stalled rocket engine production. New spacecraft are years behind schedule. Even the Soyuz factory faces bankruptcy. The crisis runs so deep that President Vladimir Putin himself has had to step in to rescue a collapsing empire.
So, how did it all come to this? And does this mean Russia is falling out of the Space Race altogether?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Alpha Tech.
Russia is in BIG TROUBLE, Even Can't Build Rocket Engines...
September 11th should have been a day of celebration for Roscosmos. They successfully launched Progress 93, delivering nearly three tons of cargo to the ISS with an uncrewed freighter. Even more impressive, this mission marked their 300th flight to the station since 1998, a staggering number that cements Russia as an irreplaceable part of international cooperation in space.
But that shining milestone only hides the rot festering inside the organization. The truth is, Roscosmos has far bigger problems than reasons to celebrate.
Russia is in BIG TROUBLE, Even Can't Build Rocket Engines...
First and foremost is Russia’s rocket engine crisis. The country no longer has reliable access to the critical components needed to build new engines. Why? As we all know, Russia’s war in Ukraine since 2022 has triggered wave after wave of Western sanctions. Over the past three years, the U.S., the EU, and their allies have imposed more than 16 sanction packages targeting Russia’s defense and space industry. These restrictions cut off access to advanced electronics, high-temperature materials like special alloys and polymer composites, and other aerospace technologies vital to rocket development.
Earlier this year, in January 2025, the U.S. State Department went even further, sanctioning over 150 Russian individuals and entities tied to rocket engine production, including major research institutes like the Central Research Institute for Special Machinery and the Joint Stock Company Research Institute of Physical Measurements.
