Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day, was the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Following the disastrous Dieppe Raid, planners meticulously prepared a massive amphibious assault, using deception (Operation Bodyguard) to convince the Germans the attack would be elsewhere. The Allies created artificial harbors and special armored vehicles to overcome beach defenses. Despite initial setbacks and fierce German resistance, the Allies established a foothold, and the Normandy campaign ultimately led to the liberation of France as German forces were surrounded and decimated.
