Vietnam might be the cheapest country in the entire world.
So in this video, I want to do a $50 challenge in 24 hours to show you just how far $50 goes
in a full day here in Vietnam.
In this challenge, I'm also going to include the price of my hotel room, and I still think
I'll be able to go a full 24 hours spending less than $50.
But for this video, I'm actually not going to be pinching pennies.
I'm going to be living like a tourist here on vacation.
I want to get a massage.
I want to eat at restaurants to show you what an actual holiday here in Da Nang, Vietnam
looks like.
And if you do this every day for a month, it would equal $1,500.
So this video should give you an idea of what that monthly budget would look like here.
So let's see if we actually can make it a full 24 hours here in Da Nang, Vietnam, spending
less than $50.
All right, the challenge has begun, and I think I'll actually be able to do this entire
video walking distance to my hotel.
That's how good this area is.
I honestly don't know if I've ever seen this many coffee shops, cafes, food stalls, massage
parlors all in the same area.
But let's start the video with some street food.
Let's see what they have here.
He's asleep in there.
He's got the Vietnamese hat.
They're both asleep.
Good morning.
What is this?
Banh mi?
Pork and egg.
One please.
One.
Yellow sauce.
Some sort of brown sauce.
Cucumber?
Okay.
Cucumber.
Whatever that is.
Let's do it.
And pork?
Yes.
How do you say pork in Vietnamese?
Héo.
Sorry?
Héo.
And what is that?
Salt.
Oh, and she's cooking the egg over there on a frying pan.
Grilled meat is 20.
If you get grilled meat with egg, then it's 25.
Oh yeah, you gotta get the egg on there.
That looks good.
Bao nu?
Coconut?
20.
20?
25.
And one coconut please.
Okay.
50.
Come on.
So they've got these tables and chairs set up right here in Vietnamese style.
Vietnam, they have the smallest chairs in the world.
Look at this.
It's about one foot, two feet off the ground.
Ah, come on.
Come on.
Thank you.
Banh mi sandwich for about one US dollar and a coconut for about one US dollar.
Yeah, they definitely toasted it also after they put the egg on.
Cheers.
Oh man.
This one's good.
That sauce.
Crispy toasted bread.
Hold on.
I gotta get a full bite with everything on the inside.
This is actually one of the better banh mis that I've had so far.
Super crispy bread.
The inside, you've gotta have that egg.
The sauce is really good with this one.
It's delicious.
Tom nam.
Thank you.
So if you want to know where this place is, it's a big yellow cart like this and it's
across from HI4.
It's called Banh Mi Cafe across from the Black Pearl.
Really good banh mi.
They have coffee there also.
So we spent 50 so far and then I gave a 30 tip.
Now let's go see if we can find a dessert.
Xin chào.
Yes.
What is this?
A strawberry matcha.
Oh, mango.
Which one do you like?
Oh, mango.
Mango's the best?
Okay.
I'll do one mango matcha.
Yes, please.
This looks good.
Mango, matcha, and milk.
Can I see how you make it?
Oh, mango?
Yeah, can I see?
Bananas up here, dragon fruit.
Mango.
Okay, mango.
Cold?
Uh, no, no.
Oh, no, no.
Yeah, yeah.
Cold.
Yeah, yeah.
It's cold.
Who's in the video?
Oh, friend.
Hi, friend.
Xin chào.
Okay.
Xin chào.
Oh, it's like a smoothie.
Okay.
So the mangoes go in.
Mango smoothie.
Then we blend it.
Oh, okay.
Okay, so the mango goes on the bottom.
Yeah.
Ice.
We got some milk.
So that was heated water that she had over here at the kettle, and then now she blends
it.
And then matcha on top.
Ah, come on.
Drink the drink.
Drink?
Yeah.
You want me to drink it?
Taste?
I don't want to even mix it up.
But it's going to taste better if you mix it.
And now I mix?
Yeah.
It's better?
Oh, I can do it.
Okay.
Yeah, all right.
Come on.
Now let's taste it all mixed up.
Oh, yeah.
That's good.
That's awesome.
That's so good.
How about you?
Um, 13.
No change.
That's okay.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Come on.
You take away?
You may?
Um, no, it's okay.
I can carry it.
Thank you.
Come on.
Bye-bye.
Bye.
I've never had mango matcha.
It's a good combo.
It works.
I like anything matcha, though.
We've got Korean barbecue, pizza, burgers.
I'm going to go into the grocery store here.
I don't know if I'll call this a grocery store, but I'm marked.
Open 24 hours in a lot of these places, which is really good.
I like to get the cold fruit in here.
So that's 50.
That's about $2 for that dragon fruit.
I bought a dragon fruit on the street the other day for, I think, 9 Vietnamese Dong,
9,000, and this is 49,000.
136,000 for these apples.
You can get a coconut to drink here, a cold coconut.
See how much this costs.
Xin chào.
Bao nhiu?
Bao mong nin.
Bao mong.
34.
34?
Okay.
Yeah.
Do you have...
Okay.
I see.
I have no idea what you're saying.
Just stab it.
Ah, got it.
All right.
I'll stab it.
Got it.
All right.
Come on.
Open?
Sure.
Do you have something hard to open it with?
Or I can do it.
Yeah.
Just jabbing it with the scissors.
You want me to do it?
No, no, no.
I don't.
Give it to me.
Okay.
Ah, come on.
If you speak Vietnamese, please translate that whole conversation.
But that was very nice of them.
30,000, that's about a dollar.
This one's very sweet.
It's good.
Street vendors are going to be cheaper.
This alleyway looks really cool.
Let's go see what it looks like.
Let's see what's going on down here.
This place has massages, shampoo, hair washes.
I wonder if they'll give me a hair wash.
Hello.
You have hair wash.
Hair wash?
Yeah.
Yes.
What if you look like me?
Yeah.
You 45 minutes.
Hair wash.
You know how to do here.
You find the neck and so the massage.
So what happens if I do a hair wash?
You no hair wash.
What would they do?
You massage, okay.
You no hair wash.
You find, okay.
No hair wash.
Why not?
Why can't I get a hair wash here?
Yeah.
You no hair.
Okay.
So you can do a head, neck, and shoulder massage?
Yeah.
Okay.
45 minutes, 200?
Yeah.
Okay.
Can I make a video?
Yeah.
It's okay?
Yeah.
It's okay?
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
I'll do neck and shoulder massage with a hair wash.
Okay.
Xin chào.
Come on.
Water?
Okay.
Come on.
Thank you.
What is that?
Oh, a cookie?
Okay.
Come on.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
What is your name?
Do you work here?
No English.
Okay.
That's okay.
Okay.
No problem.
She gave me a coconut cracker here.
Okay.
Come on.
Thank you.
I came in here trying to get a hair wash, but I'll take a massage instead.
There's something hot.
I don't know what this is under my head, but it's warm.
Maybe hot stones.
All right.
I'm going to talk to you later.
Bye.
Come on.
Thank you.
Oh, yeah.
My shoes.
All right.
I started walking away with the slippers here.
I wonder how long that would have taken me to realize I was wearing their slippers.
Let me wander down this alleyway a little bit more because it's super cool.
Like a massage alley.
Restaurant.
Massage.
Nail.
Oh, this is yours?
What is this?
One.
One?
Okay.
I have no idea what this is, but we're getting one.
Whatever it is.
She's got this speaker that she keeps turned on, and you can hear it for a few blocks over
here, saying whatever it is that she's selling in Vietnamese.
Something orange.
I don't know.
That looks like maybe some dried fish flakes.
She's got this cart set up here on the corner, and it looks like it's always takeaway.
She just puts it in a bag for you.
So there's something wrapped in banana leaf also, and a bag of secret sauce.
Come on.
Bao Nhu?
Ba Mui.
All right.
Here you go.
Come on.
No changes.
Okay.
Come on.
All right.
So we have a mystery meal.
Let's see what this is.
Come on.
Let's see what we just got.
I honestly don't even have a guess at what this is.
There's some sort of white rings that look jelly.
Bright orange something.
I have no clue what that is.
And then, yeah, I have no idea what any of this is.
Let's see what's in the banana leaf.
Multiple layers.
Another layer of banana leaf.
How many leaves are there?
What on earth is that?
That's like a jelly texture as well.
I have no clue.
First, let me try this.
I'll get one of these deep down so we can get everything on top.
I don't think I've ever been more confused with what I was about to eat.
Cheers.
By far, the strongest taste are the fish flakes.
Those brown flakes on top are crunchy.
They're fishy.
It tastes a little bit like onions too.
It's kind of like a Funyun, a fishy Funyun.
The white part basically tastes like rice.
It has no flavor whatsoever.
The orange, I don't know what that is.
Last but not least, whatever this is in the banana leaf, it's rubbery.
I don't know.
It looks like Play-Doh.
That second one tastes like a hot dog.
I don't really like hot dogs.
I'm not going to lie.
It's not my favorite snack.
Please let me know in the comments what that is.
I want to show you something real quick.
I don't need a ride.
I'm going to walk everywhere in this video.
If you do need a ride, I want to show you those prices.
Most people use the app called Grab here.
It's like an Uber.
A 10-minute ride to Jollibee would cost 55,000 dong in a car.
Or you can choose a bike, which is cheaper but more dangerous.
And a 10-minute ride on a bike would cost 24,000 Vietnamese dong.
I'm not buying those in this video, but just so you know.
Hello, everyone.
It is later.
It's time for an early dinner.
And I'm telling you, the best thing about this hotel, look at this.
Vietnamese restaurant, Western restaurant, Vietnamese restaurant, construction worker.
So let's see how much a Vietnamese meal costs at an actual restaurant, not just street food.
I think I know what I want already, but we're going to take a look at the menu.
On the first page, of course, you have pho, which is probably the most popular dish in Vietnam.
So that's 70,000.
Glass noodles, also 70,000.
Bun cha is really good.
I'm looking for something else, but I can't find it.
I guess I...oh, there it is.
Yeah, this is what I want.
Pork, eggs, rice.
Xin chào.
This one?
Yeah.
How do you say this?
Yeah.
Shao sun?
Shui sun.
Okay, yeah.
Shui sun, and water?
Water.
Oh, yeah, this is fine.
Yeah, yeah, it's okay.
All right, come on.
And then we'll just drink the free water right here.
Food has arrived.
This came out fairly quickly.
So we have a couple pieces of pork here.
We have the egg, the rice, and scissors.
First, let's do this.
Let's try cutting with the scissors.
I'll be honest, this works much better than a knife, doesn't it?
Look at that.
And all of this, I'm going to put all of this in there as well.
This might be soy sauce.
Let me taste it.
I don't know what it is.
It's better than soy sauce.
It's got a little flavor to it.
There are onions.
I don't even know what that is.
I think this is garlic and chili peppers.
Dump it on.
All goes on.
That might be spicy.
This is probably more spicy going on.
That is a beautiful thing, ladies and gentlemen.
I'm going to get a bite with everything.
Egg, pork, rice, onions, peppers.
Colorful bite.
Cheers.
Mmm.
One of those red things is spicy.
I have a paper cup.
It is good, but it is hot.
Should I be using chopsticks?
Yep, hold on.
Everybody's using chopsticks.
I forgot I was in Vietnam.
This time with chopsticks.
I'm going to eat in peace.
I'll talk to you after.
Goodbye.
As you can see, with Banh Mi's, cooking at home, eating at restaurants,
you can eat for less than 10 US dollars a day here.
Good morning from tomorrow.
It is 6.15 in the morning.
I'm going to see if there's a coffee shop open.
There.
Right next door.
Caffè Darkom Duong.
Okay.
$18,000.
Come on.
Thank you.
They keep it in a bottle, and they sell it on the side of the road.
Pre-made.
It's just this thick, chocolatey liquid.
It tastes kind of like dark chocolate, but I got it without sugar.
And it's just a tiny bit.
It's super strong.
I'm a big fan of this furry building.
I'm headed out to the beach just to make a phone call.
Calling my family right now.
Let's see how much one of these chairs costs to sit on the beach.
Hello.
Do you work here?
Oh, yeah.
Chair?
$40,000.
$40,000?
Okay, $40,000.
Maybe here?
It's okay?
Okay.
Come on.
$40,000 on a beach chair.
Let me see the translator.
Let me make sure.
One second.
Please.
I'm asking how much time I have here.
Two hours.
Okay.
Alright.
Come on.
$40,000.
Let me know if you think that's a good deal.
$40,000 for two hours.
Yes, that's a good deal.
Come on.
It is already very warm.
I'm not wearing beach clothes, but I wasn't planning on coming to the beach.
I just wandered out here.
This is not a bad way to start the day.
$1 per hour to get one of these chairs at sunrise.
I'm going to have this call, and then we will continue our challenge afterwards.
Goodbye.
Never mind.
They did not answer.
This is insane.
Look at this.
Look how much he has on this bike.
Hello.
Xin chào.
Man, I need to buy something to support the business.
Oh, flip flops?
Okay, yeah.
Yeah.
You have so much on your bike.
Okay, yeah.
I do need new flip flops, actually.
All right, let's test it out.
All right.
Come on.
Okay.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay, okay.
Bao Niu.
$300,000.
Bao Niu.
$100,000.
That's $100,000.
And these are $300,000.
$300,000.
Okay.
Okay?
Okay.
$300,000.
I don't know if you bargain in Vietnam or not.
No, I'm not going to bargain because this is not easy work.
Oh, come on.
Come on.
And maybe a hat?
But this is insane.
I don't know how you can drive with all of this on your bike.
This is wild.
That hat?
No.
I don't.
Oh, good.
Good?
Good.
I don't think this is my style.
What do you think, guys?
Is this my style?
Vietnam.
Bao Niu.
$100,000.
$100,000 for a Vietnam hat.
Vietnam.
Let's see.
Vietnam Dong.
Okay.
Okay?
Okay.
Let me do this color.
Okay.
Okay?
Good?
Looks good.
$100,000 for this?
Okay.
I think that's a good deal.
Come on.
Bag?
Oh, no.
It's okay.
I have a bag.
Vietnam.
No, it's okay.
It's okay.
I'm okay.
This is good.
Oh, don't burn it.
Vietnam.
I don't need a belt.
I'm okay.
No, thank you.
Have a nice day.
I'm styling with my new Vietnam merch.
So about the bargaining, I actually do think this is a bargaining culture in that situation.
I'm not sure.
But at the end of the day, we're talking about a difference of $2 or $3.
And he's out here in the heat working hard all day.
I don't feel right bargaining over $2 or $3 just to take that money out of his pocket
and to put it into mine.
Maybe he needs that money more than I do.
And honestly, I'm happy to pay $11 for these flip flops.
I'll wear them for a year or two until they're broken.
The only time you might see me bargain is if someone is charging a ridiculous price
for something.
Maybe to take advantage of me because I'm a foreigner or if it's one of the bargaining
cultures where they start the price five times higher than what they expect to get
paid for it.
In those situations, you are supposed to bargain.
But now, let's go see what else we can find.
What's this?
Sugar cane?
One?
We've got some sugar cane juice here.
So she puts the sugar cane in the machine, it flattens it, and you see the juice going
down there.
So two full sugar canes makes only one glass of juice here.
We'll see how much juice we get out of that.
And she's putting them in one more time to make sure she gets all of it out of there.
Here's the garbage.
Found you?
Okay.
20?
I'm not sure where she's going.
Oh, she's going to get a glass for me.
Here it is right here.
The juice went in this container.
That is a big glass as well.
She's got ice in there too?
Come on.
Ice cold right here on the hot streets of Da Nang, Vietnam.
Let's give it a shot.
Oh, that's good.
Very good.
This reminds me of my childhood.
We used to eat sugar cane.
We would just chew on it in Alabama.
Tastes just like that.
Delicious.
Oh, high five?
Now I'm off to the gym.
I just changed.
I'm one block away from the gym, my hotel.
I don't want to film in there because it's kind of creepy to film people working out,
but I'll try to get some shots and I'll definitely give you the price of how much a gym is here.
But first we need to caffeinate, so let's find some coffee.
Shouldn't be too hard.
Here.
Black coffee.
Vietnamese coffee.
Caffe Da.
18,000.
Xin chào.
Caffe da cong dung?
I think so, yes.
No sugar.
No sugar, exactly.
Yeah.
That's the strong stuff.
The pre-made coffee.
Oh, they've got salty coffee also?
Coconut coffee?
Can I do salty coffee?
Salty?
Salty.
Yeah.
Salty coffee?
I have no idea what a salty coffee is.
I've never had one.
I've never heard of one.
Salty.
Okay.
Salty.
Yeah.
This one?
Okay.
So we had the black coffee.
Is it good with milk?
Huh?
Good with milk?
Okay.
Milk.
Little milk is good.
So a little condensed milk I guess?
Yeah, that's good.
And so the saltiness is going on.
Whatever that is.
It's white.
It's creamy.
Wow.
Come on.
Bao Niu?
Or 25.
Yeah.
So it's only 7,000 more for the salty and the milk added on.
Come on.
Thank you.
I have no idea what a salty coffee is.
I'm not even going to research it.
I'm just going to try it first.
Before I mix it, I just want to taste it like this and then we're going to mix it up.
Hmm.
I love Vietnamese coffee.
It's chocolatey.
It's creamy.
But now we got to get the salty.
I didn't taste anything salty yet.
I'm trying to do this with one hand while holding the camera.
Very creamy.
Not salty at all.
Tastes kind of like milk chocolate whipped cream or ice cream.
It's delicious but I don't taste any salt.
We are fully caffeinated for the gym.
That was a $1 caffeination stop.
Now let's go to the gym.
Oh, there it is.
It's called Pig Gym.
Good name.
We should be on the beach on a day like this.
But we got to get fit first.
Good workout.
That was $100,000 for one day or it's $550,000 for a month.
It has everything you need.
Dumbbells, free weights, benches, cables, treadmills.
Then if you want protein, a lot of the pharmacies have protein.
They sell protein and creatine at a lot of these places.
Now the time has come for the room tour.
Probably the highlight of this room is the location.
Everything I've filmed in this video has been within a 5-10 minute walk from this room.
About a 5 minute walk to the beach.
The bed has been comfortable.
Slept very well here.
I've got AC.
This is not working for whatever reason.
It just stays on.
TV.
I haven't even turned that on.
Mini fridge.
Storage space.
Bathroom.
The hot water stays hot.
I have not run out of hot water.
The name of the hotel is Sandy Hotel.
Not to be confused with Sandy Apartments because that also exists.
If you're looking for it on the map, just find the place next to Solis Coffee Shop.
So the final price of that hotel was $808,000 Vietnamese Dong for two nights.
So $404,000 per night.
Which means we failed the $50 challenge.
But you see how easily I could have gone under the $50 challenge if I really wanted to.
As you can see, your money goes a very long way here in Vietnam.
Here is another video from Vietnam.
Thank you for watching this one and I'll see you in the next one.
