Hi everybody, welcome back for another painting tutorial. If you're new, my name is Joni Young and welcome. I'm so glad you guys are here today
I'm gonna show you a lot in this video
This is something different and never done before and it comes as a request from one of my dear patreon members GJ
So thanks for requesting this GJ. I hope you enjoy
what I'm doing today with your idea of painting a yin-yang or yin and yang and
creating a landscape
Fantasy
painting within that so I'm gonna go over the canvas the colors we're using and
The brushes and then we'll go ahead and get started. So first off I've got an 11 by 14 stretched and primed canvas
I pre-painted it with black and
I have the following colors here and I'll have a full list below this video as well in the description box
So I've got Mars black titanium white
Aqua green turquoise light olive green sap green phthalo blue
Luminous lemon yellow luminous pink opera or opera and I've also got luminous neon rose
So the first thing I want to do is create
The circle shape for yin and yang and I'm gonna use a dinner plate
So you could paint on a bigger canvas, but I'm just gonna use this. I think this is a decent size on an 11 by 14
okay, so we've got a number 14 filbert brush a 20 flats a number 3 round a number 2 rigger and a
1-inch mop brush
So the first thing I'm gonna do is load my filbert brush before I place my plate on the canvas
I just want to start with gray. So I'm gonna take a little bit of white and
black here
And I have a little bit of water in my brush as well, but it's not dripping
so make sure that you don't have too much water and
Take your plate. This is a standard size dinner plate and
Place it where you want try to Center it and I'm just gonna start by going around
And because I want to create a bit of a glow
Around this the end and yang. I'm gonna make this a little
wider
Okay, and I carefully take the plate on we've got a nice
Circle there to work with now. What I want to do is come around and add a little bit more gray
Creating a little glow
around the outside here, I
Don't have a lot of water in my brush
The reason being I just want it to look really soft
and sort of misty and glowy like
And if you have too much water in your brush, it's gonna end up looking really streaky
Okay, I'm gonna continue around
all the edges
So I love to free hand. So I'm just gonna go ahead and free hand and I'm gonna take
That light gray again
Now you can sketch yours out first with painters chalk if you want
However, you guys know that I really like to free hand. So I'm just gonna go
Not from the top right a little let's say pretend. It's a clock. Here's 12 o'clock
We're gonna start in between 12 and 1 so I'm gonna go from here
Then we're gonna bring it over
It's like how you would paint the starting of a figure 8 except you're gonna just do this part
You're not gonna follow through with a figure 8
so what the I didn't read too too much about the yin and yang, but the basic meaning of it is balance and
harmony
So light and dark cold and warmth
and it's probably a little bit more in-depth than that, but that's
What I know about it and if you guys have any info that you'd like to add
Go ahead and leave that in the comments below to start off with
Adding a little moon here. So we do have the circles one here
And then we're also going to have one right down below first
And then I'm gonna take some white and I'm just gonna twist around
for the white circle and
Then inside here is going to be
Our lighter area. So I'm gonna go around
The outside of the circle with my white
Leaving the inside dark for now
And I'm just gonna add
soft little ring around
Some little clouds, so I'm going to take a little bit of white on the tip of my brush and I'm just gonna start
Creating these little half circles using this filbert brush
The shape it is and what it's for and then a little a little bit more water on my brush
Along with some of that white and we'll just add a little
Swirl here side to side go back over to our number 14 filbert brush
those same colors
It's a little bit darker lighter than this. That's fine, too
And we'll start I'll start with this one here
With a little dab tap tap tap now turning my brush this way
Pushing and tapping down making it wider as we get to the base of each tree
Okay, I'm gonna come in front of this one adding a little bit more white
so I'll just take a little bit of
gray first
no water on my brush at all and
Because these are far away. We're gonna just make
them a little
smaller
Just on an angle pull and then
Almost add a little
Curve as we get flat down here. Yes, and then I'm gonna just try to add a highlight on part of this gray and
Not push very hard. We want to just be really really light and just
Catch the side there
And make it kind of patchy looking
Leaving a few spaces for shadows
And then drop
And then again make another layer
And have it come from this side and down
And add a highlight here you want to have those little lines and then corner of my brush ease into it
You can have it just spilling over the edge too and then we'll have it kind of just
Okay now
Next step I'm gonna be using my mop brush set a little bit of black here first up top tap
No water on my brush at all
Don't overload your brush and I'm gonna add a
Little dark bush here and there
Okay, and then right away a little bit of white we're just gonna tap on the little highlights
Use more or less
Okay, so I'm gonna add some more clouds on this side using a little bit of
Gray to start
We have that mid-tone
Darker or lighter than this is just fine
And I'm just gonna
Start some clouds in here same way pushing and smooshing
Just a tiny bit of water here on my brush
And see the difference it makes
Over to my number three round brush
I'm gonna get a little bit of white on there just a little bit like this and I'm gonna start adding
some little scoops
That are gonna get bigger
If you're ever having trouble keeping a steady hand place your pinky down on the canvas
Obviously you want to do it on a dry canvas. Otherwise, you're gonna ruin
Whatever is wet that you just painted
Tree, so I'm just going to
Start adding
Some interesting branches here coming down here inside
Going with that shape
Pushing and twisting and rolling for just like the base
and all those little roots
at the base of all trees
I'm not gonna take some white
Just make this stand out a little bit more
and
I'm going to
Tap in lightly
Reload my brush
just add a
Little bit down here
I'm just gonna start adding them here
And have them come down
and go above
Clean my brush
slice into
So it's a little wiggle first just to get my bristles nice and
together again
and then come in with a
little bit of black
or in between
Those stairs
Okay, I'm gonna come up and over here
I want to brighten up this side a little bit before we come in with some color
because this is
the bright
side of the
Yin and Yang
So I'm going to take my black
add a shadow
Maybe we'll add a little figure in here. Let's just start with
It's the side of perhaps a little
little scoop like this
Half circle on the top
We're not going to see a lot of detail
We just want to create a figure
We'll have her hair coming down
Shoulder
And we can have her dress
Just coming down
and flowing
And how we're just resting our hand on
her leg
Want a little bit of a shadow back here
Over the gray
Back over to some white
and add a little bit of
Highlights to her dress
The highlights
on the railing
Okay, everyone now it's time that you get to decide if you want to add color
So I'm going to show you and demonstrate what it'll look like by adding color
So we're going to filter over and I want to start by adding some blue
Over the night sky. So hey, well, I hope that you guys enjoyed this one and I want to wish you guys all the best
I'll see you soon in another video. Bye
