Of all the forgotten queens on this channel, Urraca is often one of the lesser known - and yet she was the first European queen to rule in her own right. But she was no mere bystander of her fate. Urraca was also a tenacious and confident ruler who understood how to rule effectively and with political skill. But due to her position as a woman, contemporaries would remark on her chaotic personal life, her apparent 'recklessness' where it was admired in kings, and her desire for power itself.
