The Brewers are the first to punch their ticket to October, an 8 straight loss by the Mets
today.
Mathematically clinched Milwaukee a spot tonight.
The Champagne will await the Brew Crew as they face the St. Louis Cardinals in Game
2 of this three-game series.
Jacob Mizorowski, this is an audition for him for the postseason.
Is he going to be a starter?
Is he going to be a reliever?
Is he going to be on the roster?
The Brewers have some decisions and these starts matter.
Here's Yvonne Herrera.
And Herrera with a high fly ball to left field.
Collins going back to the trap, to the wall, it's gone!
Herrera sitting on the fastball and he knocks it out of the park to give the Cardinals an
early lead.
Great swing and a great way to start this game for the Cardinals.
1-0-1 the pitch speed, 1-0-1 the exit velocity.
Alec Burleson hit a triple here last night, his second of the year.
Burleson, hard contact right at Joey Ortiz on one hop.
That'll bring up Wilson Contreras, he'll embrace with his brother William.
Oh, well that might be dinner table conversation too.
Well, we'll give you a hug and then, well, you're going to have to rub some dirt on that
bruise.
And this is where he struggles.
When guys get on base, out of the stretch, runners on base, going 2 to Newt Barr.
And Newt Barr strokes this one into the gap.
That will be down for a base hit off the wall.
Shurio to pick it up and fire in.
Here comes the relay home.
It's not in time.
And the Cardinals have a 2-0 lead.
The ball got away from Contreras at home plate and allowed an extra base for Newt Barr as
well.
He's at third.
Ball smoked by Newt Barr to the left center field gap.
I thought we had a chance out there, but Contreras motors around third.
A high relay throw here for Ortiz.
William Contreras, the bruise catcher, misses it and allows Newt Barr to get to third.
Contreras in the glove and that's a rough error.
So Sejasi strikes out.
Miz gives up a couple of runs.
Mizorowski will oppose Sonny Gray, who's been by far the best starting pitcher for the Cardinals
this season.
When Gray starts, the Cardinals are 20 and 9.
Sonny strikes out the side.
After one, the Cardinals lead in Milwaukee 2-0.
This is interesting about Mizorowski, though, Alex.
He's getting hit.
Normally his problem is he walks and then he gives up a hit.
Now they're just getting hit.
They faced him before.
They have a good game plan.
It looks like the Cardinals do.
Can he make an adjustment?
So a 1-2-3 inning for Mizorowski.
Good bounce back for him.
Sonny Gray struck out the side to begin this game.
Now we'll face Contreras, Yellich, and Collins.
First pitch swinging.
William Contreras drops one into center.
Now the Brewers have their first hit of the night.
People don't realize.
They think Christian Yellich just hits singles.
He's got pop when he's right.
Runner goes.
Yellich strikes out.
Throw to second.
In time.
A strike him out.
Throw him out.
Double play.
First of all, a great pitch by Sonny Gray here.
3-2 to Christian Yellich.
Break him.
And then the throw by Collins is just perfect.
Contreras had no chance.
Top of the order.
Brendan Donovan against Jacob Mizorowski.
Donovan drives this one to right field.
That ball is gone.
Second homer for the Cardinals tonight.
And Donovan is into double digits on the season.
It's 3-0 St. Louis.
A little curve ball down and in.
Donovan just drops a bat head on it.
Fresh up to the major leagues.
Your first time out.
You throw a hundred.
Everyone's like, oh, look at the cool new toy.
If you remember after the Cardinals faced him the first time, I think it was Pajes that said,
next time we see him, we'll be ready.
And this time, they're ready.
3-0 deficit after the home run by Brendan Donovan in the top of the inning.
First four outs that Sonny Gray recorded tonight were swinging strikeouts.
3-2 coming.
Ground ball up the middle.
That's a base hit.
He'll stop at first.
It's a leadoff single.
And maybe that starts another big third inning.
Durbin up the middle.
And it's back-to-back singles for the Brewers here in the third.
Two on.
Nobody out.
Broken back to Mortise.
Dribbler.
And Dorman has no play.
Everybody's safe.
Runner crossed in front of him.
And the bases are loaded with nobody out.
And he's saying, I got a ball that was hit about 40 miles an hour.
Someone's got to make some sort of a play there.
Instead, the bases are loaded for Sal Freelick.
Freelick to center field.
Scott is there.
Tagging from third is Bowers.
Throw goes to third.
The Brewers are on the board.
Sack fly from Sal Freelick.
And it's 3-1.
Base hit to the outfield should tie the game.
And here's Turrio.
Gray set.
And he throws.
Swing and a miss.
He got him.
Back to the breaking ball.
That's the one that he got swinging strike two on.
And it gets a huge second out here in the third inning.
Now the Brewers will need something but two out from Bryce Terang
if they're to get more than just the one run.
Bouncing ball right side.
That should end the inning.
The Brewers get just the one run.
And then Victor Scott with a chance to drive in a run.
Get that run back.
The Brewers scored in the bottom of the third.
But now two outs and a runner on first base.
There's a line drive from Victor Scott.
The second hit.
And a gap.
Diving is Turrio.
And he makes the catch.
Rewind that one and hang on to it.
Oh my goodness.
What a grab.
Jackson Turrio.
He just saved a run.
And what a catch it was.
Sprinting left into the right center field gap.
This is a great job by Sonny Gray of mixing it up.
Using all of his pitches.
He gets two strikes.
He goes to the ones he knows he can put them away with.
He's got them going out of the strike zone.
He's got them fooled.
And it'll be a one, two, three, fourth.
Three, one, St. Louis.
Top of the fifth.
There's a line drive into center field from Herrera.
Turrio unable to track this one down.
And it bounces off the wall.
Herrera digging for two.
And he'll get in there sliding.
One out double for Yvonne Herrera.
Ali Marble mentioned Yvonne Herrera as one of the positives from this season.
This dude can hit.
Triple shot of the cycle already.
And he's in scoring position with one out.
For Alec Burleson.
Fly ball.
Left field for Burleson.
Collins underneath it.
Two gone.
Bring up Wilson Contreras.
And Contreras smokes this one into the gap.
Down for a base hit.
Herrera around third to score.
And it's 4-1 St. Louis.
Far cry from the first 11 innings.
Mizorowski's career where he did not surrender a hit.
He's been touched for seven here tonight.
So Mizorowski is finished after five innings tonight.
Gives up the four runs on seven hits.
And gives way to Grant Anderson.
This is one of the big stories for Milwaukee down the stretch.
They're navigating a lot of bullpen injuries.
And there are some serious question marks there.
These are opportunities for these brewer guys and some of these youngsters.
To pitch in big moments.
And prove that they deserve a roster spot.
Collins charging in.
And this drops for a base hit.
With Ortiz backpedaling and falling down.
Aggressive base running from St. Jacy.
Who runs right in front of Collins.
And gets to third.
A little blue pit by the Cardinals.
And gets to third.
Pitching change for Milwaukee.
So here's Victor Scott.
With Rob Zastrisny taking over on the mound.
Scott takes a swing here.
Lifts it to right center.
Pretty deep.
Churio going back.
Makes the catch on the track.
St. Jacy tags from third.
Heads home.
And the Cardinals lead 5-1.
That pop up being caught would have prevented a run from scoring now.
Here's a ground ball on the left side.
Durbin ranging to his left field.
Spins.
Throws to first.
And not dug out by Bowers.
It actually trickles down the first baseline.
Towards home plate.
And going all the way to third on the play as Pajas.
So not only will they not get the out.
But Durbin will be charged with an error that allows Pajas to get all the way to third.
And this gets all the way to the backstop.
Another run will score.
It'll be a wild pitch on Zastrisny.
And this has not been a clean inning defensively for the Brewers.
Sonny Gray has departed.
Responsible for South Freeland at first.
But terrific night.
Eight strikeouts.
Matt Sponson is in the game.
Browns one left side.
Eight ups to Jay-Z.
And he's unable to recover.
2-2 on terrain.
Way outside.
It's over the glove of Pajas.
Back to the backstop.
Freelick and Churio both move up 90 feet.
Sponson swung on and missed.
He got him.
Matt needed that one.
And there's the first out with Wilson Contreras coming up.
He pops it up.
Center field.
Scott underneath it.
And a run will score as Freelick comes home.
Now Yellich.
Yellich with a chopper.
The second.
Donovan fields and throws.
And the inning is over.
Brewers get a run.
They do it on just one hit.
Milwaukee trying to build a rally here.
With nobody out in the game.
Trying to get back into this game.
Freelick with the knock.
Now a walk.
And all of a sudden you're in the heart of the order.
Inside ball four.
Bases loaded.
Nobody out.
William Contreras at the plates.
Contreras to center field.
Scott drifting back.
He's underneath it and makes the catch.
Tagging from third is Freelick.
He'll come home.
And the Brewers are within three.
They'll bring up Yellich.
And Yellich grounds one up the middle.
Going to be a tough play for the Chargers.
So J.C., he gets the out.
And another run will score.
Four runs scored on outs.
Taking a little bite out of this deficit.
But still looking for that big swing.
Payoff pitch.
Up and away.
Ball four.
And they will send Bowers to the plate.
Jake has been the hottest bat over the last week plus.
And a fly ball to center.
It is shallow.
Coming in is Scott.
And he'll make the catch.
And the inning is over.
Brewers get two.
Cardinals leading the Brewers 6-4 as we go to the ninth inning.
Myers back out there.
Stressful little start to this ninth inning for Tobias.
One and two on Sejasi playing shortstop.
The pitch with two on.
Sejasi ground ball.
Hit it toward right field.
Base hit.
Coming around third.
Church is streaking to the plate.
The throw goes for third.
And hit the runner.
And goes into foul territory.
Down to second goes Sejasi.
The Cardinals have added on and lead 7-4.
2-2.
Swing and a miss.
Struck him out.
So two away.
And now Pedro Pajes.
Tobias Myers pitches a swing.
And there's a ball that is hit in the air to right center.
Stays up long enough for Frelick to get there.
And the right fielder puts it away.
The Cardinals got one run back and left two on.
Getting a look up here is Riley O'Brien.
Going to try to shut things down.
Two hit by pitch.
And all of a sudden they're one stand away from tying this game.
But guess what.
The Brewers have a tying run to the plate again.
That's remarkable.
Frelick a base hit into the gap.
Durbin around third.
He will score.
And the Brewers are within two.
An RBI double for Frelick in the ninth.
And it's 7-5.
And now the tying run is on second base.
Nice job by Victor Scott to cut this ball off.
The only thing was by him sliding and going the way,
it allowed Frelick to get to second base.
And now the tying run is in scoring position.
This is Brewers baseball.
They trailed in this game 6-1.
Churio.
Ground ball.
Stopped by a dive.
One will score.
Milwaukee is within one.
We're going to get a pitching change.
Running out of options here.
Trying to close this game out.
Got to give William Contreras a shot here.
One out.
Contreras taps this one up the third baseline.
Frelick will score.
And the game is tied.
Milwaukee comes back with three in the ninth.
And a team that will not quit.
One of the hardest things to do in sport.
Especially baseball.
Game on the line.
The crowd is chanting your name.
Try not to do too much.
Called strike three down the middle at 96.
They just throw a fastball right down the middle.
And Christian Yelich just wasn't ready for it.
Now Isaac Collins is 0 for 4 tonight.
Collins.
Line drive to right.
Right in the tracks of the right fielder Church.
Who's there to make the catch.
To the 10th we go.
And now a base is loaded.
Nobody out situation that Uribe has to work around.
Uribe comes home.
And Herrera with a ground ball.
Left side.
Flipped to the back for one.
On the first.
It's a double play.
A run will score.
But the Brewers will trade the two outs for that run.
If you get out of this with only the one run.
If you're the Brewers.
You're pleased.
Pitch.
Broken bat.
Ground ball to first.
Flick is made in time.
Brewers get out of it with just the one run.
And they have 10 walk off wins this season.
Line drive.
Into the get.
Hits.
And this game is tied.
Caleb Durbin.
Comes up with the goods.
And it's 8-8 in the 10th.
Really, really nice swing here by Caleb Durbin.
Stays right on it.
Barrels in.
The left center field gap.
So here's Monasterio.
Boy, if ever there is a game that represents Brewers baseball.
This is it.
And the 2-2.
Monasterio.
Up the middle.
6-1.
3.
It's a tie.
In the 10th to win it.
And this is how you want to celebrate a postseason game.
None of the loss.
You get to go in there.
In front of your home crowd.
Walk off winner.
What a game.
