NASA once put humans on the Moon, but that was a story from the last century. What if China manages to beat the United States in the new race to the Moon? It would be a devastating setback, showing that after more than 50 years, American technology has fallen behind, while China has advanced further than ever.
To prevent that outcome, NASA officials have developed a bold and strategic plan, designed to crush China’s lunar ambitions and secure America’s dominance in space.

There’s been a lot of talk about Artemis and America’s return to the Moon, but not everyone in Washington sees eye to eye. One example of this disagreement came recently during a public hearing, when former NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine warned that with NASA’s current approach, especially the heavy reliance on SpaceX’s still-untested Starship, it could be very difficult for the U.S. to beat China back to the Moon.
NASA’s acting administrator, Sean Duffy, didn’t take that lightly. He pushed back, calling Bridenstine’s comments misleading and harmful, especially at a time when the U.S. is trying to coordinate with partners and stay ahead of China’s rapid progress.

On a podcast hosted by NASA public affairs officer Gary Jordan, Duffy explained what worries him most. And surprisingly, it’s not SpaceX, it’s NASA itself. He said: “Here is my one concern. If Artemis I, Artemis II, and Artemis III are all $4 billion a launch, $4 billion a launch. At $4 billion a launch, you don’t have a Moon program. It just, I don’t think that exists. We have to bring the price down.”
And that’s the heart of the issue. Each Artemis mission comes with a price tag of about $4.2 billion, and most of that cost comes from NASA’s SLS rocket. It’s so expensive that building any kind of long-term Moon program around it becomes nearly impossible to sustain.
