What could be better for our first episode in the new year
than starting with a butterfly, the symbol of rebirth?
I hope you'll find a handmade glue gun stencil,
combined with acrylic pouring, really interesting.
You'll also find an extended version of this tutorial in my Patreon.
Not to mention that you can own the butterfly if you head on to avcreativeofficial.com
And we already have 2024!
Welcome!
This is going to be my first video this year.
If you watched last week's deer,
I actually made it before I flew away for almost three weeks.
So I came back today in the afternoon,
and as you can see, I'm already in my studio.
I feel like creating something.
I was thinking what to make, and I have to say a huge thank you to Patti.
Patti suggested creating a butterfly with a glue gun.
And I thought, how come I actually never tried it?
I tried different butterflies.
I was trying to make each one using different medium,
but somehow I didn't think about it.
So today we'll be testing if I can make a glue gun butterfly.
I'm going to try just one, a biggish one,
because of course with a glue gun I can make a tiny one.
It's going to melt all together.
So this is the 30 by 30 canvas.
If you wonder how I start my projects, I do some research.
I look at the images.
And then I'm going to draw it on tracing paper, baking paper, wherever.
Look, there are some templates as well,
so you can find templates that are royalty free,
or you can take your own photo.
I started drawing the butterfly,
and then it dawned on me that if I do one side and I'm happy with it,
at the moment I'm not happy yet,
I don't have to do the other one,
because it's going to be symmetrical, roughly.
This is my silicone mat, some of you were asking.
There's a link in the description.
Some of you told me that not every mat is equally good.
I only had two, and to be honest, I am not complaining about either.
Okay, I can move easily, because I like turning the image.
I like getting to all the sections.
Oh, I missed this baby, I really did.
Let's start with this one.
You can go over some sections.
All right, one done.
Okay, I think I made it smaller than I intended.
I'll be filling up those sections in a similar way
like I did with the deer, if you've watched it.
Okay, let's do the big sections first.
I mean the big opening.
It's going to be really 3D.
I'm going to do the bottom part of the wing now.
Okay, I might, instead of actually filling it with glue,
I might do some circles, you know.
I think I want more sections exposed, so I'm going to do this.
At the moment, I can't imagine what it will look like in black.
I like the not knowing, you know,
because it's going to be a surprise for me as well.
At the moment, I'm going to do the body.
And if you're wondering how I'm going to do the second wing,
I'm going to show you in a minute.
And on the body, I'm going to fill up some sections
and make some stripey bits.
With the head, I am going to make a round blob.
I definitely don't want the body to be perfect.
I want it to have some uneven parts,
so I think I'm going to leave it like this.
Okay, so actually, I don't have to wait for it to be dry.
I'll show you what will happen.
So, this is part one.
Now, this one will go this way.
And I can see everything, so I'll just do it the same way.
And of course, it won't be identical, but I'll try.
I'll try to make it as close to this one as possible.
I'm finishing the second part, and I find it much easier.
These were much quicker, easier.
Well, that's a bit of practice.
I find those circles the hardest.
Well, I don't think they are so necessary,
but since I started here, I have to repeat some of them.
And I do want them attached to those sections.
Once I peel it off, they don't just fall out.
I do a half, and then quickly the other half.
And this way, it's pretty easy.
Okay, let's try the little antennas.
I'm making a dot.
I don't know how big I want them.
And then I will drag some of it down.
I wonder if it's too big.
But the thing is, how am I going to make the second one the same?
I think I made it slightly smaller.
We'll see when they dry, I'll test them on the head.
All right, the butterfly is ready.
I'm going to leave it for at least probably half an hour, so it really sets.
It's cold now.
Maybe 10 minutes, then.
And then I'll peel it off.
Well, as usual, I am impatient.
It was probably five minutes.
I need to peel it off.
Maybe 10 minutes, then.
It was probably five minutes.
Maybe 10 minutes, then.
I'm going to leave it for at least half an hour.
It was probably five minutes.
I love peeling off glue gun.
I was trying to make the inner parts a bit thinner than the outer ones.
Yay, ready.
I'm going to heat it up a bit to eliminate the wispy bits.
I pulled some of them off.
There's still some left.
If your hairdryer is too powerful and you try to heat it up,
you can end up actually melting your design, so be careful.
Do you know what I want to do now?
I want to cover it with black.
And my options are, I could always paint it.
Once I stick it to the canvas with perhaps Posca pen over it, I could do that.
I could take a brush now, cover it with acrylics,
or the quickest option and the easiest would be using spray paint.
I do have some black spray paint, so I will go outside and I'm going to spray it.
I do have some other sprays, but I also found this water spray, gloss black.
I think it will look nice with gloss black.
This paint, this car paint, is ultra fast drying.
I can touch it.
Wow, midnight.
See you tomorrow.
I want you to see this mess.
This is actually the part that takes me the longest.
I have some leftovers from the previous paintings and I keep them in small containers.
So what do I have here?
I've got some paints that I used for my deer in the woods,
the winter piece that I'm so happy because it's super popular.
So if you haven't watched it, please do.
So these are some of the blues.
Phthalo blue, I used cobalt blue, pearl glacier blue and pearl turquoise.
Pearl turquoise is the only one that I didn't use for the deer and I also didn't use gold.
So we've got gold as well.
And I want to show you what I am doing now.
So I've got the pure colors.
So this is cobalt.
This is phthalo blue.
Now I'm adding white.
I'm tinting all my paints with white and that's what they look like.
So this is the tinted cobalt.
I added white here but what I've decided,
I separated this one and added a little bit of black and I intermix them.
So for example, I've got half and half turquoise
and now I'm going to take a bit of black and I want to make a shade.
Shade is the color with added black.
If it's going to be too dark, I will add some white.
I think that shades are more elegant.
Sort of, of course, more muted.
Look how different that looks.
And as I said, if I think it's too dark, in goes a bit of white.
So I'm playing like this.
I listen to a podcast or some music and mixing, mixing.
All right.
Now I'm happy.
If you're wondering what's inside, one part of paint, two parts of floetrol.
And as you can see, I am making everything pretty runny with some water.
And that's it.
Before I start pouring, I'm bringing my butterfly.
Looks interesting, doesn't it?
I'm going to put it here and I'm going to very gently draw around.
Yes, the colors will cover the marks but I want to roughly know in which direction to blow.
Probably won't see much later, just for the beginning.
It's interesting on this.
This is my resin lamp that I'm making.
Putting it higher.
I like doing it at an angle.
You see, in a minute, I won't see any of my wings, but it's OK.
I have no idea what the outcome will be.
If you're wondering, I'm just using my gut feeling and in my mind, I can see how I want it to go.
And then I'm trying to match the picture in my head to what's going to happen on the canvas.
Of course, I haven't tried it before.
You know, I always do it for the first time.
Any design, it's always my first time because I think it's more interesting.
And otherwise, I would be bored.
Background colors, roughly done.
So these are the two heroes of today.
Little flower, but I'm going to do it in two stages.
That's also something new that I haven't done.
I want this to be blown really smoothly and easily.
Therefore, here comes my old friend, the old AB artifact.
I was going to retire it because it's falling apart, as you can see.
But I think it's going to be useful now.
Please don't make that thing.
It gets hot, it falls down.
It's crazy.
So just a warning.
Maybe I'll start with low.
Okay, so we've got like a little explosion here.
I'm wondering whether to add some more blue.
A little bit of blue here.
Okay, I'll spread it again.
I think I'm liking it now.
If there was a sun here, it would look like a sunset or maybe sunrise.
The most important bit.
Now I'm going to layer the darker paints in the middle and blow over these.
Before I apply the darker paints in the middle, I've decided to check all the edges.
You see how nicely they drip down.
Honestly, I don't know what will happen.
When I checked the consistency, it was very similar, but now it feels so much thicker.
So I'm going to make another explosion if it's even possible.
Okay, I definitely don't want something like that.
I think I put too much.
That was the problem, didn't I?
I put too much.
So look what I'm doing.
I'm basically blending them again, but I'm not putting anything to the middle.
That's all I have.
I don't mind a little bit of the darker colors going to the edges, but not so much.
That was too much for my liking.
Oh, yes, I'm getting something.
Okay, I definitely like the lighter edges.
Okay, I'm almost happy.
This is the new color.
See all the mixture.
So I bet it's going to be a beautiful grayish blue.
There's some gold in it and some greenish tones.
Wow, awesome.
Yes, we'll see what happens next with the butterfly.
After super long deliberation, which side would be best?
I've concluded I think I like this one.
It took me probably half an hour, which I completely don't understand why.
So time to glue it down.
But before I glue it down, I'll have to mark exactly where I want it
because I don't want to hold it forever with glue underneath and then deciding.
So it's much better.
Now let's see how accurate my eyes.
So he should be in the middle.
And he is.
Little marks.
That will do.
Flip him over.
Nice and flat.
It's going to be easy to stick down.
This really resembles, this is like part two to the leaf that I made,
the Canadian maple leaf, which is actually in Canada.
That's so nice.
I was so happy when it flew to Canada.
So I wonder who's going to have the butterfly.
My glue.
I'm going to make a puddle here.
And it is a brush.
This is water-based.
That's why I like it because if anything goes wrong, I can wipe it off.
See how easy?
I still haven't found a good spray in the UK.
So if you know of any in the UK, I would really appreciate it.
I'm ready to apply it.
The body.
So flip over and press here.
Making sure that all the little bits are stuck.
This glue is very strong.
I use it for jewelry making as well.
Now is the time to enhance the butterfly inside.
I am going to use the same colors as in the background.
And also looking at some metallic paints.
Pearl turquoise.
Pearl electric blue.
Definitely yes.
Pearl glacier blue.
Okay, so this is going to be super satisfying.
Using a brush and painting inside.
We've got an iridescent paint here.
Oh yeah.
Very pretty.
Too much.
I can use both.
So putting a little bit of blue on top.
Oh yeah.
Liking that.
Oh, look at this.
I'm also adding a bit of darker blue to some sections.
You can see when the paint is not opaque.
It's not easy to cover some bits.
So it's good to mix a couple of colors together to get the opacity.
Let me see what can I mix.
I keep going with some darker blues now.
What do you think of this wing?
See how shiny it is.
That's what I have at the moment.
Now those dots.
I wanted them lighter, but I'm not sure if I want them really white.
So perhaps I'm going to apply this color first.
Let's do this.
And I realized I forgot the antennas.
I've got them somewhere.
I just need to stick them down.
Well, I think the butterfly is standing out more now.
Butterfly is very shiny.
Lots of metallics here.
Trying to be fast because I came back late this week and I want the video to be done.
So I spent every night painting since I came.
It's quite difficult when you have another job.
Speaking of which, I am so grateful for all your lovely comments.
I really, really appreciate it.
I read all of them.
But unfortunately, I'm so busy with all the other stuff going on that
I don't always have time to answer them.
It helps me keep going.
Not to mention the amazing group of patrons that I have.
I am so, so utterly thankful.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
To know that there's a group of people who want to support the channel
and help me create all those free tutorials for you guys.
It's incredible.
Now is the time to add shadows around.
Okay, so I'll go around in some places, not everywhere,
and add a little bit of darker color.
I found the missing antennas.
I'm going to paint them black.
Okay, that's perfect.
Yeah, that's cute.
And the second one.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
I find making those glue gun stencils really, really interesting.
And there are so many possibilities.
