I backpacked solo in the John Muir Wilderness August 12-19 2024. This wilderness area is part of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The main destination of my route was the off-trail Bear Lakes Basin.

🗺️ About the route:

I created a 61-mile figure-8 loop to access Bear Lakes Basin from the west side of the mountains starting at lake Thomas A Edison. It’s a very remote area, you need a reliable car to reach the trailhead.
The route includes a 19 mile section of the John Muir Trail, and diverges at Marie Lake. I would bring micro spikes if you want to do Granite bear pass, it’s usually filled in with snow. I didn’t bring them so had to take a different pass. Seven Gables pass is made of tall class 2 ledges that form a giant staircase descending 1,000 feet. It has some seasonal snow chutes at the top which might require micro spikes in a higher snow year or earlier in the season.
