Recent rainfall in the Northern Pioneer Valley may provide minor relief from dry conditions, but significant improvement is unlikely.
Well, it's been a dry end to summer, but
some wet weather could soon be on the
way.
Our drought does continue to worsen for
some. 22 News Storm Team meteorologist
Alexa Biano live in the weather center
to tell us when we could see some
relief.
Yes, Nick and Sara. We've seen drier
conditions in the northern Pioneer
Valley, but we could see some minor
relief.
This summer, we were below average in
rainfall, especially in August,
resulting in abnormally dry areas, which
is a level one. And in northern Franklin
County seeing a moderate drought, which
is a level two. The National Weather
Service updates the drought monitor
every Thursday. And with the recent rain
we've had, it could help the dry
conditions we've seen in the last 30
days.
I don't think it'll be significant. Uh I
think you'll definitely see maybe it go
back to just abnormally dry. Um cuz some
spots did get around an inch of rain, so
that does help, but I don't think you'll
see it get completely wiped out just
yet. Rain is better than no rain, but
downpours run off easily, not giving
plants and grass enough absorption of
water at a slow and steady rate to get
to the roots.
Saturday night into Sunday morning,
there was a nice steady rain that fell
for quite a while and some spots picked
up another/2 inch to an inch of rain. So
that all does add up and it's good for
the grass. It's good for the trees, the
shrubs, the rivers, creeks.
Short range, Massachusetts is below
average in rainfall for September 17th
to the 23rd. According to the National
Weather Service 8 to 14 day
precipitation outlook, however, long
range we are predicted to have an
overall average rain season from October
to December.
There was quite a long and significant
drought we had last fall and that's the
trend we want to stay away from. working
for you. 22 News Storm Team
