Probably the best part of this year's 2023 Get On ADV Fest in Mojave, CA was the riding. I was stoked to get out and do some off road desert motorcycle riding on my Honda CRF450L with @BigRockMoto @ADV_Agenda and our buddy Randall. We headed up out of the desert to the Chimney Peak area before coming back down and riding motorcycles in the Mojave Desert into Jawbone Canyon. It was an awesome desert motorcycle riding adventure with bikes of all sizes from my Honda CRF450RL to Ian's KTM 890 Adventure and Randall's KTM 1290 Adventure. All of us had a blast navigating the forest roads and then the desert sand and rocks, as well as an unexpected water crossing on this ride! I've been doing as much Honda CRF450L desert riding as I can to prepare for this year's Oregon BDR trip, and this was a fantastic warm up and opportunity to do some Honda CRF450L sand riding to sharpen my skills before the big trip. I hope you enjoy this off road motorcycle riding adventure!
Going towards the mountains, baby!
This looks like freshly graded garbage.
As Sean Connery would say,
Never Hesitate.
Holy shnikes.
Holy shnikes, this is gorgeous.
Sand, sand, sand.
So much sand.
Ooh, that is slick, dude!
And then next thing you know,
sand.
Will we survive the descent?
Huh.
Don't like that.
But it is day 3, Saturday.
We are suiting up to head out to Chimney Peak.
It's like a 150 mile loop, so.
Got the armadillo bag on my 450L
because I don't have enough range to do 150 miles,
even with my 3 gallon tank,
so we're going to get out and
skid up into elevations.
The idea, as you can see,
I'm already sweating.
It's quite warm.
That's supposed to be the hottest day of the trip.
93, I think, today.
So we're going to go up into the mountains,
try to get some good views,
some fun riding,
and going out with Ian,
who you may know as Big Rock Moto,
Jeff, ADV Agenda,
and the rest of the crew.
Randall.
Going out with Randall.
Randall.
The Scandal.
Crandall.
I don't know his last name.
Anyway, we're going out together, so.
I'm going to suit up and we'll go,
and I'll try to get you some good footage of that ride.
Ian, on the 890 Adventure,
his brand new one.
Jeff, 500 EXCF.
Randall's over here on a 1290.
He'll be leaving us all in the dust all day.
I don't know where he is, but.
We're going out to Chimney Peak.
It's going to be a blast.
Gorgeous, bro.
Boy.
Going towards the mountains, baby.
Shockingly.
That's why we're going up today.
Now we're going off-road.
I'm going to go ahead and guess.
This looks like freshly graded garbage.
We still have 90 miles to go on this route, so.
It's going to be a lot of it today.
Alright, burned area.
That'll happen.
Used to that, sadly.
At home.
I got some new gloves.
Alpinestars actually sent them to me,
but it's my first trip with them.
The Halo.
You can't really see,
because I got that stupid monkey paw for my armor.
But the Halo Adventure gloves.
Really high airflow, mesh back.
Super armored palm,
like triple leather, triple stitching.
It's got some soft armor
and then hard armor on the knuckles.
And they're very comfortable.
And really good feel on the bars.
I'm pretty impressed with them, so.
Enjoying them so far.
That was a rock.
So I'll link those gloves if you want to check them out.
Oh, and the new maps on this thing.
So I've got it in map 2.
That's the single track off-road map.
Because I put that new ECU in.
And riding loose gravel like this
was a real pain in the ass before.
Because you couldn't give it any gas in a corner
without it immediately spinning out
and losing traction.
And now it's much more gentle
the way it applies it.
You have a lot more control.
Oh, s***.
Hi.
Hi, Toyota.
My bad, I'm not riding right.
Trying to stay out of the damn dust.
I need to just fall back maybe.
That would make more sense
instead of being on the wrong side of the road.
Pretty loose.
Pretty freshly graded, it feels like.
Beautiful.
Beauty.
Gorgeous.
No flowers.
Moving on.
Kind of in this...
Looks like an old riverbed
is what it is.
So there's a little bit more sand now.
As we kind of go up this canyon.
I'm just going to confidently go through it
and assume that I won't crash.
Because that is the only way to handle it.
Can't think about it too much, honestly.
As Sean Connery would say,
Never Hesitate.
He was talking about sand.
Never Hesitate.
Go home.
No, that's not the song.
Too much dust
to see what is on the road.
Oh, pretty.
We climbing.
Holy shnikes.
Bro.
What are we doing?
That's amazing.
Wow.
Unbelievable.
Little cave.
Probably full of scorpions.
He didn't say it like that stupidly.
He sounded more like Sean Connery.
But those are the words that he said.
That's a beautiful rock.
Yes.
It's slick, dude.
Slick, bro.
Oh, we are headed into Jawbone Canyon
and it is getting hotter.
Now it's getting good, boys.
Hydration station.
I like it.
Excellent news.
Found some dirt.
So we still have like 40 miles
before we get back.
A little bit more interesting road.
There's Ian.
Gotta stop because we're at a crossroads.
Let the group get back together.
Make sure everyone goes the same way.
That's a hell of a shot right there.
Windalicious.
Windtastic.
Winderful.
There it is. I knew it was coming.
Pretty cool. These things are enormous.
You can see the little tiny door on the bottom.
That's the size of a human.
So, you know, they're 100 feet high.
Easy.
And there's Ian and a tree.
It's treeing.
It's like experience-wise
forest and then
now we're back in the desert.
Pretty cool.
It's a lot of variety in one day.
We'll probably be out four hours today.
This is not the road.
Turn around.
Okay.
Yeah, it's kind of hot right now
where the air doesn't
cool you off because it feels like a hair dryer
blowing on you.
Seems they made some updates to the track.
This was not on it last year.
I didn't ride it, so I don't know.
There's pavement over there, but you don't take the pavement.
You just ride down the ridge,
which is more fun, I'm assuming.
Oh, it's pretty as hell.
I'll tell you that.
A little steep. Let the boys clear.
Very good feel
on the brakes on this.
I'm always really happy with it.
Yeah, this is the most technical thing we've done.
Pretty. Very pretty.
I just know we're going to get into
a sandy descent down one of these.
I can just smell it.
Oh, there's the road we're going to.
Can we get there?
Will we survive the descent?
Killing my bike.
I got it in too low gear.
It's quite a rut right there.
It's coming into our track.
That's fun.
This is a good level of challenging.
I don't like that Ian's stopping.
Probably got the sandy exit.
Don't like that.
It is what it is.
I guess we're going down.
It's very steep, by the way.
Camera won't show it off.
It is damn near 90 degrees
here at the bottom.
Nailed it.
Nailed it, boys.
