Injured, Out of Water, and Lost in the Alvord Desert: 2021 Giant Loop Ride Day 3

Today is day three of the giant loop ride. We are headed out on our quest to see the Alvord desert. I ran this guy over. This is a place I've always wanted to see. You made it. So we're turning around. We missed the turn. Edge of it right now. My leg is trapped. Previously on lost. It's a beautiful morning. I want to point out the local celebrities as I'm walking around. Those garbage cans back there are full of ice and beer. What have we got here? Head out and ride the reservoir loop. Well, we got up quick. Not bad views friends. This is big country. This is our 10th annual giant loop ride. Extreme closeup. It's still be grouchy giant pants guy who can't hold a cigar. I'm much better at holding cigars now. And now the conclusion. Good morning. We went to get coffee this morning, but they were out. So I'm making my own coffee, instant coffee here by the truck in the cup that I would have gotten my coffee in over there. Presentation last night went well. A couple of people have come up and talked to me and said that they liked it and uh, it resonated with them. So that's good. That's what we're going for. That's what you always want, right? Today is day three of the giant loop ride. Day three for us. It's really the main riding day for most people and we are on a mission. Dog fan and I have both always wanted to see the Alvord desert. It's not close, but it's a hell of a lot closer here than it is at home. So Harold told us last night there's a gravel road that goes directly there and it's actually faster and more direct than taking the highway. So we're going to try to find that, but can't wait to get some footage of it. Also, I want to be your internet writing buddy. So consider subscribing if you haven't for more adventures like this. Good times. All right, we're going to finish our coffee gear up and get the F out of here. No cusses. That's bad. Nobody cusses here at these adventure rallies, especially not me during my presentation. We are headed out on our quest to see the Alvord desert and we are going to see the playa. Stopped here at man lake. Look at this gorgeous gorgeousness. That's the Steens mountains. They're beautiful. Those urals, the side cars that we passed are here. So let's take a look at them. I ran over a rattlesnake. I want to get footage of it. I didn't hit him on purpose. Sorry, buddy. I do not feel good about that. I ran this guy over. Sorry, pal. R.I.P. Bucket list item right here, everyone. This is a place I've always wanted to see since I heard it existed. We're going down there. Hell yeah. Wow, dude. Look at this. Oh my God. So cool. Wow. That's so massive. We did it. We're here. We were on a mission. We had a mission today. We were going to get to the Alvord desert. We're in the Alvord desert. This is crazy. So we really enjoyed our time in the Alvord desert bucket list item for me. It was really stoked to be able to get there. And afterward the group decided that we were going to try to follow one of the tracks that Giant Loop had given us instead of just going back to the gravel road. So this is us riding through a track that takes off out the South end of the Alvord desert. I'm voiceovering right now because my mic adapter was being real crappy this day cutting in and out. You probably heard it. Sometimes there's wind noise. Sometimes there isn't. We're still on the track. That's a good thing. Big rock right after that jump. Not huge, but it's avoidable if you're prepared for it. I was not and did not. It looks like we jog onto the other road up here, which is good because that's about all the sandy I want. I agree. Yep. I'm right at my comfort level. You're doing great, dude. Yeah. Thanks. I'm just telling myself it's my DRZ and not thinking about it because the technique is the same. That was about right. Sandiness. I don't, I have no idea where that part goes. I don't know. I'm kind of wishing we'd just gotten back on the gravel road. I hope it's the one. It's got to lead out, right? He's saying go right because look, it's pretty deep right there. Trevor's digging in. I just don't want to be committed out there. And then we got to dig out three bikes. Okay. Yeah. He's got an exit. All right. I'm going down. My leg is trapped. That did not go like I planned. I just got to get it off my leg. Oh yeah. It's hurt. Camera on. Yeah. It's a little, it's fine. Well, I should have gone faster and I knew that we can get out right there. Yeah. Yeah. That side is better. Don't come this way. Well, although Trevor's buried too. My ankle is not good. It's sprained. I think, I think it's sprained. Let me try to waddle it. The boot just saved me. So ladies and gentlemen, where are your riding gear? That would have been a broken ankle. I should have just waddled it in the first place. Sandy wash. Nailed it. You're almost there, man. Almost there. Almost there. Yeah. Good. Good. Good. Good. Yeah. You're crushing it. Crushing it. You got it, dude. Don't be a dumbass like me. You made it. You're home free. I saw you down and I was like, God, I got to get off my bike. I just got pinned underneath. It was less than ideal. I only crashed my twin when there are other people around to help me pick it up. Tired. Dehydrated. Uh, I have a little left, so we're turning around. We missed the turn. I never saw a turn, but the track, I were clearly past the end of the track. We think the turn we missed might've been right where I dropped my bike. So we didn't even need to go through there. So this'll be fun. I can't believe you picked yourself up by yourself. It was not all the way down. Lost in the desert. At this point we'd come about a mile down the Sandy, really deep Sandy road. My confidence is shot. I've dropped my bike twice. Duck fans dropped his bike once we're all running out of water. And we looked up around the corner. There was a group coming back towards us and it was just more and more of this sand. And they said it was more and more sand ahead. So we decided to turn around and go back the way we had came to try and find the track that we'd missed. So the other two guys joined us. We got the bikes turned around and it was another hour of waddling these big heavy bikes through this Sandy crap back to where I dropped my bike in the first place. So complete waste of time going in the wrong direction. Very, very rough and slow going on these big heavy bikes. Well, my nervous shot. Otherwise waddling is working pretty well for me. It's just slow, not very fun and a lot of work. I mean that road wasn't that bad until we hit the Sandy patch. How much gas have we got? I have no idea. I can't see my gas gauge. Do you think any snakes are going to come back and try to get revenge for the one I killed? They probably came by and covered up the entrance to the road we were supposed to take. I would explain it. They're like, yeah, bitches will get lost in the desert and we'll come and eat their corpses. I don't know bro. I'm on the edge of it right now. Well, I mean you're getting there. That's all that matters. I'm just ready to be done. I'm parched. Let's find that turn. If it's not there, I'm just going to live here. See the track is there. It's not right here where he's going. It's here. So, and it connects with the road we were on before. I just wonder if there's an easier way that doesn't involve going over this dune. If we go farther down and it's just road like that, we'd be fine. All right, we're turned around. We're going back to the Sandy part where I dropped my bike. I'm trying to record sparingly cause I'm almost out of SD card, but I'll get this part for you. We're just full on waddling it. We think we missed the track, so we're going to try to get back to the track. I have a bum left ankle, so I'm trying to lean right. TC is on. TC is not my friend. I hate it. I'm just going to follow my glove. It's bright. This is so fun, you guys. So when Harold gives you tracks, follow the tracks this way. Money. All right. I'm basically through. You got this bro. Let's get out of the goddamn dunes. That route took us right around him on purpose. I'd rather ride the roads that I know and worst case, I'll get back on the playa and get on that gravel road. I got enough gas. I think we need to just keep moving. Yeah. What's up man? Nice to meet you. Oh yeah. Yeah. It's hard to hide. One hour later. Saw a car on the road ahead of us. I'm optimistic we might be nearing civilization or at least something that isn't a road with potential sand dunes on it. Although if this jogs right and doesn't hit the road, I'm going to freak out. I got it. Gravel road. I got it. We're here. Legitimately. Like I'm not like trying to exaggerate or be a drama queen here, but there was no moisture in my mouth. Definitely a little silly. I ran out of water 45 minutes ago, so I'm just really glad to be back on this road. That sucked balls. That was not awesome. Oh sweet Jesus. Thank you. We're all very happy. None of us are, we're probably more dehydrated than any of us want it with men. 16 miles. I'm going to drink a whole gallon of water. Getting gas, going to get some food, hydrate up, figure out how we're going to get back. Brutal. What a day. Well, you can't say that wasn't an adventure. What do you think duck fan? I think we should actually go back the way we came. That would be smartest. I think you're right. It's only 130 miles and about four hours of slogging through the desert. Yeah, I'm in. I'm in. I think you're a smart guy. We just had a delicious burger and milkshake. Maybe the best milkshake I've ever had in my life. It might've been even if I wasn't dying, but man, it really felt good today. Delicious. We're going to get on the bikes. We've got about two hours to get back to the hot springs. I'm feeling a lot better after a burger and a shake and two giant Gatorades filled my hydration pack. Interesting, harrowing adventure today, but I had a happy ending. And if you're ever in fields, Oregon, highly recommend field station, delicious burger, great milkshake. They don't even give you a straw, just a spoon that thick, that good. And apparently they land planes here sometimes and get gas. So that's pretty neat. But like I said, we're going to head back. So we made it back to camp. Dinner's happening. We're about to do the vendor presentations. Hey, we're visiting. I just filmed this upside down and doing it again. We're visiting the most popular guys here. The guys handing out the beer. So, um, then the corazoles are actually a little damaged. They took the brunt of it. All in all great day. Got to see the Alvord, which is bucket list for me. I'd always wanted to see it. Got to ride across it. Got to ride my Africa twin in sand, which is not something I ever wanted to do. So thanks for watching. Thanks for coming along tomorrow. We're going to pack up and head home.
