Solo camping off my dual sport in some local mountains to test out the latest upgrades to my 2022 FE501s.
I'm way overdue for a good camping ride since the last one I did was back in April during my trip down south to the desert. On top of that, I just made some new modifications to my bike ahead of the high mountain riding that I hope to be doing by late June/early July.
I've installed the first DUAL SPORT COMPATIBLE chainsaw mount from Gravitas. They recently sent me that panel to use on my backcountry rides and so far I am really loving it. I'll leave a link in my equipment list 👇🏼 down below 👇🏼 if anyone is interested in checking them out.
Mosko Moto also sponsored the channel lately and sent me their latest gen Reckless 40l (liter) saddle bags which I could not be more excited about. I have the Reckless 80s as well as the 7 liter ultralight bags from Wolfman luggage, so now I feel like I have every kind of bag that I could possibly need. Same as for Gravitas, I'll leave a link in my equipment list 👇🏼 down below 👇🏼 if anyone is interested in checking them out.
Then, finally... I changed out my countershaft oil seal. So far it is doing its job! So, I am hoping that will be the last of my oil leak (at least for a while).
Hope you guys enjoy the video.

What's going on you guys welcome to the channel on today's video i am very stoked to announce
that we are going moto camping it feels way overdue i think the last time i went camping was
man i think it was in the mojave desert back in april i think so yeah definitely way overdue
so if you've been watching the channel for a little bit then i'm sure you'll notice
my bike is a bit different over the past week i've been making uh some some changes some
some much needed changes to my bike so instead of the baja designs headlight i have just swapped it
over to a uh as far as i'm concerned the first dual sport compatible front saw mount that i've
ever seen so i got turn signals i got a headlight uh i got the chainsaw i got all of it i just don't
have my you know nice baja designs headlight it's a different headlight i'm also running a brand new
set of saddlebags right now so i want to take a second and give a quick thanks to moscow moto
because they just sponsored the channel and they just sent me a whole bunch of gear which was super
cool of them but i'm now running the reckless 40s and i'm pretty excited about them so yeah
oh and then on top of that i finally fixed my oil leak so i finally got that new oil seal put in and
i put about 150 200 miles on this bike since i i did the seal change so we'll see but i mean
there's no leaks so we'll see what happens i'll keep an eye on it um but yeah new seal
saw mount saddlebags a lot of changes so this ride is almost like the uh
shakedown ride for all of these new upgrades because i'm still kind of working out the kinks
of the the saw mount and uh you know my saddlebags definitely have to break in
but i really like them when i was assembling the saddlebags i was really excited about
how they were looking and i think if you pack them right you know they might actually be
big enough that you could do a whole bdr route on them
oh check it out it's a grouse that's a big grouse whoa yeah it's funny i'm not sure what it is but
this road is just like always a magnet for grouse i'm just always seeing them up here so the plan is
you can kind of see it we're just on the outskirts of town right now you can see town's just way down
there um yeah just on the outskirts gonna see if we can't find a good camping spot i have a couple
options that i'm thinking of right now but um i'm kind of stopping here because i'm looking at that
right there and it kind of looks like a good spot so i'm just gonna go take a peek at that
because i've actually never been down to that spot i don't think
but it looks like there's some pallet wood over there
i don't even know if i can get to that can i oh this is crazy i've how did i not know this trail
was here only question i got is if there's enough firewood for me over here there might be
the other spot that i was looking into whoa that's first gear the other spot i was looking into
there's a stash of firewood over there oh man but this is a cool spot this is a really cool spot
that's definitely not enough wood heck i might even shuttle some firewood down here if i have to
all right all right i gotta stay focused let's go look at the other spot first
wow look at all these freaking grouse dude they're all they're doing the whole freaking
mating routine oh that's so cool that that's another spruce grouse that's crazy i haven't
seen them in so long and then now i'm just it's the second one i've seen sorry dude i like kind
of got in between you and your date i'm really liking the feeling of these reckless 40s right
now um and that's that's honest opinion not just because moscow sent them to me but i have the
80s i have the ultralight bags that i used in the mojave desert and then i guess kind of like a
middle ground between those two is where my reckless 40s kind of sit and um you know my
reckless 80s are awesome i've used them on three bdrs now and i really like those but you know
they're huge bags which in some ways is you know good because i definitely use the space with all
my camera gear and stuff which by the way if anyone ever critiques me about how much stuff
i pack on a bdr it's literally almost all camera gear or at least i don't want to say almost all
it's probably a third of my packing equipment is camera gear and all the you know additional stuff
needed to like charge stuff but yeah i think i've been practicing uh trying to be better about you
know packing tighter you know like okay you don't need 10 days worth of food you don't need
you know six different sets of clothes right so i'm trying to get better about being more
minimalistic about my packing and i think if i do it right these reckless 40s might be totally
capable for doing a whole bdr which would be awesome because they feel pretty nimble on my
bike you know my reckless 80s feel it feels like i'm pretty laid down when i'm riding with the
reckless 80s so you know this could be a really cool upgrade and i know i've been like talking
about the bags i haven't shown you the bags yet i'll show you the bags when i get to camp or at
least when i get to this other campsite that i was kind of looking into so i don't think we're
actually all that far off from the spot i just gotta see if i can remember how to find it
because i think it's gonna kind of sneak up on me where there's just a little
you know turn off and i might ride right past it so i gotta see if i can't spot it before i
blow by it yeah i think this is it yeah this is the spot so you could see like
in a pretty sweet view right i think i still like that other spot better though
it's good it's not gonna tip over you guys can see my new bags
they're pretty sweet huh i'll show you guys more when i get back to camp now i'm kind of running
out of daylight so i gotta make sure i can actually get some firewood for us yeah there
was a bunch of firewood stashed over here oh no it's all gone all the firewood's gone okay
i'm sure everybody took that firewood and split with it there's little bits left i'm gonna gather
the little bits that i can and i guess we'll just make it work right about there and i guess
this stuff here no way
this might just work
i'm gonna have to short shift without the clutch
all right we're moving
if you've never short shifted before it's basically where
all you have to do is you have to remove pressure from your transmission to shift with it and that's
what the whole clutch is for it removes pressure from your transmission but you can create the same
effect as a clutch by adjusting your throttle so if you like kind of chop the throttle you can
oh no i lost a piece of wood all right you know what that's all right i'm not going to go back for
it i think i'll lose more wood if i try and go back for it um but yeah if you chop the throttle
like watch i'll do it again right now and i'm going to shift down a gear
i just shifted down one i'll shift down another one
same thing to go up so it's like a blip and then you chop the throttle and uh yeah
now it's just about kind of maintaining a you know a good speed because if i have to stop
then i have to let go of this wood and grab the clutch
i saw the turn off to get to the spot and i was like i don't know how to break so i just killed
the motor oh man and my 510 cc's just locked up the rear wheel immediately
all this for some freaking firewood
oh man you gotta laugh at yourself in these moments you really do
you know what screw it i'm just gonna i'm gonna walk back and
carry the wood back i'm just gonna leave it here this is ridiculous all right
i will come back for the wood perfect you know i'm taking the vest off too if i'm carrying all
that freaking wood stay all right wood is gathered in the spirit of saving time i will uh
i'll let you guys watch this time lapse of me setting up camp because i don't think i have time
to i don't know do a big unpacking of the bags and all that fun stuff so time lapse it is and
i will see you guys when it's time to get a fire going
that should be enough wood for tonight i'll use that
and then if i need more i'll rip those planks off hopefully it's dry enough to burn
i'm usually not a big fan of burning pallet wood because there's nails in it so i dug this fire pit
extra deep so one it's a bit safer from you know embers flying out two if there are any nails
they will stay in there i don't know what kind of fire pit the previous people here made it looks
they just set a fire on top of the dirt see then it leaves behind nails so i dug it in a lot deeper
so it's a proper fire pit now yeah this fire is crazy hot right now i did not mean to let it get
this hot but at least i have a good coal bed that's for sure the problem is i feel like i'm
going to get my water boiling and i'm just not going to be able to get it out because it's so
hot good stuff i always measure this wrong i always think i need so much more water than i
actually do for my dehydrated meals because you'd be surprised how little water actually gets the
job done i always end up with like a freeze-dried food soup that i have to try and eat and it's not
easy but i think this is enough oh it smells so good oh man the cool thing is like you know
usually when a freeze-dried meal is you know crazy sounding like you know chicken coconut curry it's
like dude that's way too advanced there's no way that's going to come out really well but i don't
know how they did it peak refuel did a really good job it literally tastes like curry you know it
doesn't taste funky it tastes damn good yeah all right we're gonna see if i can do this with the
gloves so far so good ow some of the hot water splashed on me there we go we got it oh yeah
that's perfect oh wow this is still very very hot let's see so good every single time every time
wow here i'll show you guys what i got man it's nice i'm camping in an area that
does not have any bears i don't feel bad about when i spill food you know i'm not going to be
waking up at 3 a.m thinking there's a bear outside my tent maybe a coyote that could happen i always
sleep a little bit easier when i'm not in bear country that said i plan on doing some camping
in bear country this year no honestly i think in terms of the things that scare me when i go out
solo camping is um bears can be one of those things where they can just be a nuisance i guess
you know because you have to be kind of more conscious of where your food's going to be and
you know where you're making your food what kind of food you're making usually bears don't scare me
especially black bears black bears basically just run as soon as there's a person um
getting smoke in my eyes now grizzly bears i have never actually seen a grizzly bear in person
i don't want to see one to be honest with you they do exist i guess the point i'm eventually
going to get to is the only thing that really makes me nervous are the two-legged animals
people also i'm going to put a little bit more firewood on you know there was the time in the
oregon bdr where my buddies and i were camping in the mountains on that really really cold night
probably one of the coldest nights i've ever camped in in my life and um some dude just
started wringing out gunshots around us that's a big gun no that's a gunshot you're right
that's a big god i don't think that's a bolt gun gunshots in the mountains are not weird
that itself is not weird but doing it at night is a little bit on the odd side because for me it's
like okay if it's during the daytime somebody's out hunting someone's shooting for fun i don't
know they could be doing whatever but at night time it's like okay either they're screwing around
or you know maybe they're defending themselves from something or maybe they're the aggressor
i have no idea um people are unpredictable i just i always come back to that that point
animals are predictable people are not if you have a sketchy camping story those are cool to read
you know i love hearing people's experiences so drop them in the comments i'd love to hear those
and i'm sure everyone else would too so maybe you guys have some really good camping stories
i believe that is the end of my coconut curry that was good that's a winner guys i'm telling
him if you haven't tried it give it a shot on your next camping trip i feel like you will probably
like it because i really like it all right now i gotta wash the dishes yeah that's clean good
enough all right you guys it is let's see if i can get the time it's midnight on the dot so
i think i'm gonna let these embers just kind of go down and then uh yeah probably get some sleep
so i will catch you guys in the morning for uh the interesting swiss coffee that my dad got me
so i'll see you guys then
i feel like i have just barely enough firewood to get through breakfast and that's all i need
all right i'm gonna let this cook down get a nice coal bed going and um while that's doing that i'm
gonna show you guys the bike so as much as i know these are probably gonna need their own review
videos you know i really want to show you guys just a quick glance because you know big changes
so obviously you can see the chainsaw mount plus i have a headlight mounted below that
i have that routed to a switch on the bars which is kind of nice because i can use that without
having to have the motor on it's just directly linked to the battery um obviously you know i
have the chainsaw mounted on there as well and then i routed my turn signals into this i added
my ignition key into it um so i i had to modify this thing to make it work you know as a dual
sport panel um i think it came out really really well in my opinion at least looks pretty clean
bags are looking so good so like i said i have the reckless 80s and then i have the
smaller ultralight bags from wolfman luggage and then these are kind of just in in between of
those two so they're not as big as the reckless 80s and they're a little bit bigger than my
smaller wolfman bags but they're still pretty spacious yeah i have a lot of room in these and
then i have some auxiliary pouches down below so i can keep like a tent or my cot that i slept on
last night i can keep those down in these little pouches while you know these dry bags they can
keep all the clothes and the bivvy that i sleep in all that stuff that i want to keep dry and um
one of the things that i'm very excited about is this is the new generation of bags so they
come with metal buckles now and i'm so happy about this because i break buckles all the time
so this was a really really good upgrade i'm very happy about that so this is a some kind of swiss
coffee paste i have never used this ever in my life so it could be good it could be horrible i
have no idea my dad got this for me so i know you're watching this video so thank you um hopefully
it's good i can do this without burning myself hopefully moment of truth i can actually pick
this up whoa that's really good wow almost looks like a like a grease or like a silicone gasket
maker that i have sitting in my garage but um yeah i can i can attest the uh the swiss know
what they're doing this is really good yeah that tastes like a real cup of coffee that's really
really good that's a win super good all right well instead of having you guys watch me eat for the
next 30 40 minutes or whatever um i'm gonna enjoy my breakfast and i'm gonna end this video here
i hope you guys liked it i'll let you guys watch another time lapse of me taking down camp um
shouldn't take me all that long i didn't really you know pack too much stuff but um yeah i hope
you guys enjoyed this video if you did enjoy this video do me a favor and hit the like button down
below i really appreciate it and if you guys want to see more content just like this definitely
subscribe for more videos coming out in the future and as always hopefully i will see you
guys on the next one adios guys
