Today my Grandaughter Addy to came to paint with me, and we painted these washy, wet on wet flowers. Give this a try!
We didn’t practice before, by the way. I wanted you to see how well she did and everyone can do with guidance. Her painting at the end (I need to learn how to create a split screen!)

Hi everybody, so today I'm doing our tutorial on the poppies that you were all asking me about
here and I have my beautiful granddaughter with me today. This is Adeline Ray and she's going to
be painting with us on her own next to me so you can see how easy this is. So we have got our
supplies here with us. Her and I are using our round brushes and I will be using the
Winsor & Newton paints. Addie will be using this MyLing little paint set that we've been,
I've been sharing with you all. We've got our two containers of water, so one to wash, one to rinse
and have a piece of tissue with you as well because we'll be doing a little bit of creating
a little bit of white space on our flowers and we both are using our 140 pound cold press
and let's get ready to paint. So I'm just going to flip the camera around. Addie's going to be
painting right next to me and I will be painting right here and let's have fun. Okay everybody.
Okay everyone let's go ahead. I'm using, I've shared this with you all before, it's this super
eraser. I also have my black wing pencil but this is another type of eraser you can use which I
really love and Addie is also using one of these. So we'll go ahead and get started. Addie are you
ready? Yeah. Okay let's kind of draw in somewhat of a placement. Of course for composition purposes
I'm using three objects, three kind of main focus objects or elements and then I do have two others
but they're a little bit smaller so that rule of odds for composition I'm using here. So poppies
are in shaped somewhat like a bowl if you've watched my tutorials on drawing them. I'm going
to place one here. I'm just going to very lightly, Addie if you want to do that too, just draw in like
a cup shape real lightly just so you kind of know how your poppy is going to be facing.
Yeah perfect and then do, so you want to have three and have them facing kind of different
directions. So I'll do another one over here like that and then one down here. Yep perfect Addie.
I think I'll actually face this one up. So I've got one coming out this way, one coming out this way
and then this one I think I will just do upright. So they're all kind of, yeah perfect Addie.
Okay there we go. So that just gives us a little bit of a guideline for our poppies and then
we'll add in some of the little bulbs like this afterwards. Okay so what we're going to
start first because this is such a wet in wet technique is we're going to take our brush.
My gosh this won't stand up and I'm using, we are both using our round brushes. This is at
Degato. Addie's got one as well. So let's go ahead and go in. Addie you can just use this water here.
We've got our wash water and then we've got our rinse water and we've also got by the way
a tissue because we're going to blot a little bit to create those natural highlights so you
don't have to worry so much about leaving highlights and then we've got our paper towel
here. All right so go ahead and get your brush wet and get it pretty wet so you don't really have
to scrape it off like I would normally have you doing because we are working with a wet in wet
process. So Addie make sure your brush is pretty wet and we're just going to go in and just wet
this area just like that. Use a lot more water Addie. Yeah there you go and just wet this whole
area. There we go and kind of ruffle the top of it so it's not completely straight. Yeah there you go.
Okay and then let's go in and I'm going to be using the Quinn Magenta which is Windsor.
Addie you can choose your pea color I think if you want. She's using the Milingue so go ahead
and grab some of that. You can even go into that color there and it's this tea consistency. So
normally I would have you make sure it's not too wet but that's okay because we're doing a wet in
wet process. Have you got quite a bit? Yeah put a little bit more water. There we go and then use
the side of your brush and start adding in where you wet it just like that. Yep perfect Addie that's
great and then let's go in and use the side of our brush again and just kind of tap in here and
there like that. Use the side of your brush to hold your brush like this. There you go perfect Addie.
Yeah that's great and now barely put hardly any pressure and we're going to do a little
bit of a dry brush. So you're going to go out here and just kind of do this type of thing
just using the side of your brush like that. Okay so it kind of gives yeah that's perfect.
Hold your brush to the side like that very good and then go ahead and rinse your brush.
Actually Addie you don't even need to do this top part because you've kind of got that on there.
So I'm just going to wet so we can do these top layers. Addie already naturally did that
and just kind of adding in the back here. Okay and now we're just going to leave that. Actually
let's go in I'm going to use green my sap and my olive green. So Addie you can go ahead and pick
up some green with maybe this one and you've got some green on the palette there and I want to go
into this while it's wet and I'm just going to create a little bit of just the bottom. Yeah
perfect Addie just using the tip of your brush. There we go. Okay so there's our first flower.
Now let's go to the second flower. That is excellent. I wish you guys could see how well
hers is turning out. Really good and I wanted Addie to be here just to show you how easy this
can be. So let's do the same thing. Addie go ahead and wash your brush and then dip it in the water
and we're going to hold our brush parallel to the table and you're going to go in using the side of
your brush and do the same thing. Just wetting in this cup shape. There we go. Getting that all
nice and wet. Perfect. Hold your brush like this. There you go. So it's parallel to your paper.
There's no angle. There you go. Kind of hard for you to do it because of that. Okay and then let's
go in and pick up our paint. Again we're using a little bit wetter than I normally have you all
because we want this to be really washy. So then just go in with that. Look at how beautiful.
There we go. Yeah good Addie. Excellent. I'm going to add a little bit of water up here
and then go into that with a little bit of paint using the side of my brush. There we go.
So there's our second poppy. Yeah perfect Addie. Oh my gosh I think hers is almost better than mine.
Let's go in with the green again right here. I wish I could show you all how well she's doing.
She's doing so well and just tap in to the bottom. So we want to do this while it's wet so we can get
this blend and then just come down a tiny bit with the stem. There you go. Yeah
perfect. Okay now let's go on to our third flower. We're just repeating the same process. Yeah
perfect Addie. And so rinse your brush and again you're holding your brush perfectly parallel
with your paper so there's no angle at all. And just using water going in and creating this last
poppy here. Just wetting that surface following that cup shape.
And Addie you are really good at this. And then going in and applying that paint one more time.
So you're using very much a wet brush here. Normally I have you get rid of some of those
drips and things. We're not doing that this time. And then once you, oh nice Addie. Yeah perfect.
And then let's go into the green. I'm using sap and olive green here. And you want to go in again
and just creating those lines. So you're getting that wet and wet. And I'm working a little bit
fast here because we're working in wet and wet. We want to take advantage of working with it while
it's wet. That's why I'm going a little bit quicker here than I normally go. Now I wish I could pick
up Addie's. Yeah there you go Addie. Perfect. And show you but we've got her paper taped down. Which
by the way everyone because I'm using so much water I did tape my paper down. Otherwise it
might curl and get waves in it. So whenever I'm using a painting that I'm using a lot of water
I tape it down just to keep it in place. I'm still getting a little bit of warping because
this is a student grade paper. But it's a little bit more minimal. Okay so what we want to do now
Addie and everyone is go into your I'm using cad yellow which should be this one for you Addie.
She's using the Mylang palette by the way. And I'm going to so maybe make it just right there.
There we go. And again this can be a little bit watery. There we go.
And we're going to use this side of our brush again. And you don't want to play too much.
You want one stroke. So go to that first flower. Use the side of your brush and just start at the
top and come down like that. And leave it. Don't go into it again. So use this side of your brush
just like that. And that's it. You could maybe do another one right here if you wanted.
Something like that. But the main thing here is one stroke. Don't play with it. Because
otherwise you start mixing all the colors. So let's do that again on this one. Go ahead and
get your brush wet. If you need some more cad yellow there you can go into that.
And then let's one stroke. That's the most important thing. One stroke just like that.
So you don't want to go in and mix this. And then you can add a little bit up here
at the top if you feel it. And this is kind of an effect you want as well. You want that
what they call dry brush. That's perfectly okay. Just like that. Yeah. Good Addy.
Go ahead and pick up a little more yellow and do the same thing in here. So we see that dry.
That's called dry brush Addy. So if you go on the side it'll create that. And we like that.
And then maybe just touch in at the tops. Something like that. So look how pretty that is.
Now let's pick up nice. Oh you know what? The yellow didn't show up as much on yours
because you made that one poppy orange. Yeah. Good. Let's now go in. Go back to the original
color that you used on the flower. Actually let's let that dry and let's do our little bulb.
So go into your green and let's put a bulb right here. So all I'm going to do is take the side of
my brush and I'm just going to press down like that. Kind of make this little bulb shape.
There you go. And you can go into that with a little darker green if you want.
And then let's go in and just create that stem. So using the tip of our brush and going from
the bulb and kind of down like this. Okay. Did you get that? Yeah. Perfect.
And a lot of times these kind of arch like that. And I'm just going to add one. Addie you could
actually. Oh yeah. You added two in. Perfect. And then I'm going to go in while this is wet
and I'm going to add in the color of my
flowers here and let it blend with this bulb. So I'm just going to do this.
So Addie you would go from here and just go down like that.
And then you can even add in some of that yellow with it. Just just touch it.
Barely there. Oh nice. Yeah. Good job Addie. Okay. So once this dries we'll go in and add in
these black little dots and things that's so indicative of these poppies. Right now it's a
little wet so I don't want to go in there. But what I will do is let's see. Oh nice Addie. Okay
so Addie has a little bit more puddling. So you if you do as well you can take your tissue and
kind of wad it up. Perfect. And then lightly touch it down on some of those areas that are real
puddly. Yeah. And what that's going to do is add some highlights and things. There you go.
And it gives this beautiful sheerness to what you did. There we go. Nice. See how it did that?
Okay so let's go into this one up here and create the little black dots. So Addie you can use that
color black. I'm going to use my Payne's gray which is my black I use. And just barely using
the tip of your brush we're going to go into the middle of the flower. So if yours is dry here
yeah it's pretty dry. You're going to go about right there and just barely dab
with the tip of your brush in like a half circle like that. Good job. Okay and then you can
actually do this too. Perfect. Okay this one's a little wet so I might wait. This one's somewhat
dry and you can tell when they're dry because they're not going to be cool to the touch. They're
just going to be neutral. So if it feels as you're still a little bit cold so you might get
a little bit of spread like that. Addie it might spread if it's wet so you might want to wait till
it's dry. It's up to you. So let's go ahead and create this little half moon coming out of the
middle of your flower. And then we'll go in and I've had people use their pens for this as well
if getting these little dots is harder for you. And let's just create our dots
and they go kind of in this semi-circle. Nice Addie. And right here our last flower.
Now making sure you can come back to this when it's wet and do this. You don't have to do this
right now. I'm doing it for the sake of this video. So I this was a little bit wet so I'm
getting a little spread. Good Addie. I wish I could show you hers. It's really good.
So when this is dry you're not going to get that big spread. Now the last thing I'm going to do
here is I'm Addie and I are using these sparkle colors that I've been sharing with you. I had
these from way back although I did find them on Amazon and it's the Metallic Accents Semi
Watercolors by Art Philosophy. So I'm just going to go in here make sure you wash your brush and
rinse it really well and then Addie I'll let you get in here too and pick up some of that. Go ahead
So we want it a little bit smoother and now we're going to go in and this is where I was getting
that sparkle and we're going to now again I would wait till this was dry. Use the side of the brush
hold it parallel to the desk and let's just touch in like this just here and there and what that's
going to do is give it that sparkle. Use the side of your brush like that that we have just like
that and that dry brush is really nice. I like the dry brush. The dry brush meaning your brush
is getting a little dry and you're using it on the side and it will leave little marks. Yeah good
okay let's use this darker metallic color here. Addie you can use either one this purple
or you can use the green whichever one kind of looks like fun for you. I'm kind of mixing them
together and I don't want it too thick. I'm going to use one of those that one get a lot on there
there you go okay and then we can also put this on there so using the side of my brush
just like that there we go okay
nice and I like this white a little bit of white space in here I think that makes it really
interesting what I am going to do is go in and just darken some of this Addie if you want to do
that too use maybe your darker green I think this one's darker oh that's black don't use that one
I'm going to use the darker green and go in and just touch in here like this just barely at the
like that and a little bit more
there we go and you're just using the point oh nice Addie nice now leave that don't touch that
one anymore and now go to your other one perfect and then I think what I'll do is just use the
side of my brush you already have some dark in yours Addie and I'm just going to do that
okay the last thing and you don't have to do this because I think it looks
fine how it is I'm going to add a little dry brush here so I'm wetting my brush
actually I think I'll use that sparkle and just tapping it off to get any paint and then I'm
lightly using the side of my brush so I get that dry brush effect here
and it kind of feels like some little petals coming out so if you use the side of your brush
you'll kind of get that and there we go nice I'm going to have to show you Addie's because
she did a really great job the last thing I will do and you don't have to do this
nice Addie I love the colors oh my gosh so good is let's do some splatters which
you love those yeah you can't see her but she said yes and for the splatters you want
definitely to have a lot of water on your brush do you want to use that one because it's already
pretty watered down get a lot on there like load your brush up there you go okay and we're however
you do it I do it this way just holding your brush light and just splatter go crazy do whatever you
want here there we go all right guys I hope that was fun for you let's just I want you to see Addie
so we are just going to take the tape off hers so you can see what she did here yeah well done Addie
awesome so as you see here now we'll let it dry and if you don't have those metallics you could
even use a gold paint like yellow ochre here we go I would turn the camera around but look at how
beautiful Addie did this she has never done these we didn't practice um she just I went and picked
her up brought her here and this is what she did look at how beautiful that is and she has not done
this dry brush she hasn't done wet and wet and look what she created it's absolutely beautiful
all right so I hope that was fun for you guys and I will list my supplies down below
and I think that is everything so we'll talk to you soon say bye Addie bye bye
