What is our why? Why do we want to become officers? It's a question that was posed
throughout our time at Officer Training School. The question we asked ourselves at 0430 Reveille
during the 16-hour days of academics and drill, under the unblinking eyes of our
military training instructors, in the unforgiving heat of Alabama's summer,
in moments of discourse, discouragement, and tribulation. Why do we want to become officers?
Some of us walked away from the comfort of home. Some left careers, friends, and familiarity behind.
Why? To build a better life for ourselves. To secure a better future for our families.
To honor a legacy passed down through generations. To serve something greater than ourselves.
To protect. To lead. To uphold the values we swore to defend for a nation that we love.
But OTS wasn't just about finding our why. It was about forging who we are. It taught us that
leadership is not rank, it's responsibility. That trust is earned in moments when no one is watching.
That resilience is built one challenge at a time. And that failure is not a wall,
it's a stepping stone. We learned to lead with integrity, to speak with courage,
and to listen with humility. We learned that the burden of leadership is ours to be carried.
We earned that. So when we toss our flight caps at graduation, it's not the end of our journey.
It's the beginning of a lifetime of service. Because our why is no longer just our own.
It belongs to the airmen we will lead, to the missions we will carry out,
to the ideals we will uphold even when it's tough. We came here as individuals. We leave
as officers in the world's greatest air force. Today we graduate, tomorrow we lead, forever we
serve.
