Welcome to Math with Mr. J. In this video I'm going to cover how to round decimals
to the nearest tenth and we have two examples that we're going to go through
together in order to get this down. Now at the top of your screen I have the
steps that we're going to take in order to round these two examples. So let's
jump right into number one and the first thing we need to do is find the place
that we're rounding to and look next door. So we're rounding to the tenths
place so let's underline that digit and we have a four in the tenths place. Next
we need to look next door and it's always going to be to the right, always
to the right. So we have a nine next door so we need to determine if we round up
or stay the same. When we round essentially we're just saying is this
number closer to four tenths rounding and staying the same or is it closer to
five tenths rounding up. So is that nine five or more or four or less? So a nine
is obviously more than five so five or more raised the score so we round up to
five tenths. That's our rounded answer so that number 492 thousandths is closer to
or rounds to five tenths. Now when we round whole numbers we change all the
digits to the right to zeros. When it comes to decimals you don't need these
zeros here because they're just placeholder zeros. They don't hold or
change any numbers value so we can kind of cut those off and just write five
tenths. Now five hundred thousandths that number there with the zeros is
equivalent to five tenths but again you don't need those zeros. Let's move to
number two where we have three and seventy two hundredths. So we need to
find the place that we're rounding to the tenths and we have a seven. Let's
look next door. We have a two so is that five or more and we round up or is it
four or less and that seven stays the same. Well two is four or less so we let
that seven rest so we stay the same here. So three and seventy two hundredths
rounds to three and seven tenths. It's closer to three and seven tenths than it
is to rounding up to three and eight tenths. So this is our answer here and
remember we can cut that decimal off after the rounded place. We don't need
any zeros to the right. So there you have it. There's how you round decimals to the
nearest tenth. Now I have other videos as far as rounding goes. I dropped all of
those links down in the description. I hope this helped. Thanks so much for
watching. Until next time, peace.
