The Ladakh Cultural Academy, Leh organised Ladakh Nomadic Festival, showcasing complete nomadic life and culture in its pristine form. An event full of challenges for the organisers and an event against the very nature of nomadic life where they believe living In isolation rather than living a life all together as most of the human's society does. It would also be brave attempt to bring nomads from various nomadic settlements/villages across Chanthang region. Main objective behind holding such a mega event that too in such a far off area like Anley, Changthang is to celebrate the challenging Nomadic life well within their own territory, letting their younger educated nomadic youth realise the beauty and uniqueness of nomadic culture they are living in. Though, their life style looks difficult, but they enjoy this way of life to its fullest with ease and are very happy and proud of their culture. Ladakh Nomadic Festival also aims to celebrate life and glory of Changpa Heros like Ra-zhees (shepherds), Yak-zhees, Bar-zhees and Ta-zhees always happy accepting challenges in their way and dedicating their life for the survival of others in a way. Such festivals would also have lasting impression on the future generation inspiring them to adopt their own nomadic life thus contributing towards and preserving nomadic culture of Ladakh. Such initiatives can also be well considered as a pure investment in preserving this rare nomadic culture in the Indian Himalaya.
...
I am Amita Chaudhary, a tribal girl, and I would like to welcome you all to Ladakh.
So yes, we have come to Ladakh again and right now we are in the beautiful village of Ladakh
which is called Halle and is situated in Changthang block.
You must have heard of Changthang.
If you see, the nomads who are the most common in Ladakh are found in Changthang.
And the festival in which I have come today is called Nomadic Festival.
In Ladakh, it is called Rebo Ghastan.
So, the nomads from all over Changthang have come here.
And it is a very beautiful festival.
So, we are celebrating the nomadic life here, i.e. how the nomads live their lives.
So, the nomads from all over Changthang have come here in a very different and beautiful way.
They have set up their tents here.
So, they have displayed a lot of nomadic life here.
And a lot is happening in the nomadic festival.
And the stage performances of the nomads are also taking place here.
So, you can say it is very beautiful.
Colorful events and colorful festivals have been organized here.
So, this nomadic festival started in 2021.
So, this time, this nomadic festival is taking place here in Halle.
So, I would like to tell you that this village of Halle is located at an altitude of 14,000 feet.
So, you can see the view behind me, how beautiful it is.
It looks like you can see clouds and mountains behind me.
And this grassland is talking together.
This is how it looks.
So, let's take you all to this colorful festival where we are celebrating nomadic life.
We go to Tipaz to get salt.
We get salt from here and go to Ladakh.
We get wheat from Ladakh.
The salt and wheat that we buy and sell, we get from here.
We travel from here.
Whatever we need, we get from the goats and buffaloes.
When a buffalo comes with us, we milk it.
After milking, we give it yogurt.
After giving yogurt, we take out the butter.
The butter comes out of the goat's skin.
This butter is tasty and organic.
After taking out the butter, we make yogurt.
After making yogurt, we take out the butter and dry it.
This is how we light the fire.
We light the fire.
This is a charcoal fire.
When we light the fire, it goes out.
When it goes out, we don't have to blow on it.
We blow on it so that there is less smoke and we don't have to breathe.
That's why we blow on it.
We don't use robots.
We use organic things like brass, copper, and stone.
He gave me pava, which is sattu.
This is a vegetable made from herbs and yogurt.
This is how we eat it.
It's very good.
People who eat a lot of spices don't taste it.
When we eat it, we can taste it.
It's very organic.
It's good food that our ancestors used to eat.
It's good food that we don't eat anymore.
It's very good for health.
He's with us.
He's going to tell us what's inside.
Say hi, Julie.
Hi, Julie.
This is our temple.
We worship here.
This is how we make tea.
This is how the nomadic life is represented here.
They burn copper here.
You can see the old utensils here.
The presentation here has its own theme.
The bride is ready here.
She's getting married soon.
How is the traditional wedding done here?
We make a thread from this.
And then we make a ribbon.
This is a bee's horn.
We make a bee's horn.
This is a horse's horn.
We wear it to keep us safe from the bees.
This is a horse's collar.
This is a horse's skin.
We make it soft so that it can be used to make this.
I'm making it soft so that it can be used to make this.
I'm from Tibetan Residential Sumdo, actually we are from Tibet, but we are currently situated
in the TR Sumdo village, okay, nearby the Bugha valley. Here we are, we have like 21
representatives from our village, we are having a different traditional custom. Actually in Tibet
we have like three provinces, Amdo, Utsang, and Khamba. So in here we are like mixing everything,
so we have not separate you are Utsang, you are Amdo, and you are from this and that, okay,
we are mixing and we are all together, so that means that we are one together. This is our
nomadic tent, this is the originally made up of the sheep, wolf, okay, so this is the very authentic
and the very original. So today in case if you want this kind of the tent, it's very rare to
place. So inside, so we have like at the top we have like offering everything for the our gods,
and at the top we have His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He is our father, and here we have like
so it shows that the lifestyle of the nomad village.
We take the needle, we put the needle in it,
needle. To pick it up, we put it like this, we tie it like this, there is no other way to carry it.
We store the wheat for a year, in that, so that it doesn't get stolen, we put a roof on it,
we put a seal on it, we put a matthu on it. This is from the childhood.
We put the needle in it, we put the matthu on it, we pick it up like this, we have to turn it like this,
we have to turn it like this, it will go, it will go at least 50-60 meters away, this matthu,
we can leave it like this.
So right now with us are the uncles from Niuma, who are from the Tibetan camp, which I will tell you,
this Tibetan camp is the only place in the world, which is in Ladakh. Am I right, uncle?
Yes, yes.
Okay, so uncle, we know a little bit about his nomadic life, so uncle, can you tell us a little bit?
Yes, sir.
Participating in the nomadic life is very beneficial nowadays,
the government is giving a lot of help, and on our side, the people of Pashmina are getting a lot of help.
Uncle, he wants to give a message, he wants to encourage the youth of today,
that come into the nomadic life, it's not that the nomads don't have a lot of facilities,
the government is also giving them a lot of facilities,
and the Pashmina, which is very famous and very expensive,
you can earn a lot of money by doing business with it.
So that the culture of the nomads does not end, that's why uncle is very concerned about it.
This is made of gold, it's a worship.
This is made of gold.
It takes three hours to make one.
We have with us the beautiful girls of Likse, Jhule Muldo.
Jhule!
As you know, we went to Likse, so today the people of Likse are with us,
so you can see how beautiful they are looking, and here they have a lot to eat,
there is also Thukpa, so tell us what all have you done here?
We have made Thukpa, we have made Babai, we have made Chhantu.
This is Chhantu.
What is this made of?
This and this.
This is made with Baba.
Oh, it looks very tasty.
This is Khunak.
I like it.
This is tea.
So they have made very nice food, it looks very tasty.
Sattu, curd.
Sattu, curd, everything is here.
Yes, yes.
What is this called, the one that has Sattu?
That is ours.
So you can see the whole traditional culture of Likse here, which they are representing here,
it looks very beautiful.

So you can see, from yesterday, on this beautiful field of Ladakh,
by doing Ladakh Nomadic Festival,
there is a unique fair of nomads, I won't call it a fair,
but what do you call it, it is a gathering of people.
So, if we talk about the purpose,
Ladakh is such a big region,
so every region has its own beauty.
So, my responsibility is to do as much as I can for the preservation and promotion of art and cultural language.
So, we were thinking about every region.
So, when it was the turn of the nomads, we thought, what can be done?
So, in that, song and dance was a good excuse.
So, with the help of that, we came to the concept that for Changthang,
we started conceiving a nomadic festival called Reve Gaston.
While doing it, we started in 2021 in Korzok Phu.
It was a good beginning, I would not say a success, but it was a good beginning.
So, last year we did it in Chhipra, it was very good.
So, this year is our third year.
With the help of everyone, with the help of the nomads,
you have also seen, I will not speak about myself,
so I felt that what I wanted, what we wanted, what the thinkers wanted,
to a large extent, I see today, its purpose was to explain to the nomads about their culture,
what is the significance, what is the importance, why do you need preservation, why do you need promotion?
So, I felt that today I am in a way very satisfied that what I wanted to do is done.
Now, the second aspect starts from here.
Now, what happens next?
Before this, I said one thing to everyone, I didn't like two or three things,
being an organizer,
first of all, everyone comes with a car,
so on such a wetland where your endangered, your black necked cranes like birds live,
so I don't think, I don't know if it is sensible or not, I don't know.
Secondly, the purpose of this festival was not to gather people,
the purpose of this festival was to unite the nomads,
because this was against the very nature of nomadic culture,
because nomadic culture is that they prefer isolation,
so bringing them together was a challenge,
I think it has been achieved to a large extent,
so you must have seen, everyone about it, now they are aware of their own rich tradition and culture,
that was the purpose, with this passion,
yes, there are many challenges in between,
in places like Anle, in places like Gorzokpu, in places like Chibra,
where you have to bring needle and thread from Leh,
rest you don't think,
so despite of all these challenges,
I am very grateful to my team,
what can one do alone,
whatever the villagers have done,
it was beyond my expectations,
so what can I say,
whatever you want to do,
when you see in front of your own eyes,
all the hard work,
all that is forgotten,
ultimately we go back with happy memories,
so the journey of nomadic festival started from there,
today evening,
the journey of three years will end here,
we will think further,
so you all saw,
how the nomadic festival is celebrated in our Anle,
it is a very beautiful festival,
and I would like to say,
it will be very difficult for me to express it in words,
that such a beautiful culture of Changthang,
we got to see here,
you all saw in this video,
how our nomads live their lives,
and how happy they are,
our situation is not so comfortable,
that life is not so comfortable here,
but on the contrary,
our nomads live their lives happily,
it is a lesson for us,
that in spite of difficult situations,
we can live a happy life,
so you all saw,
the colors of nomads,
the beautiful colors of nomadic life,
if you come to Ladakh,
do participate in the nomadic festival,
and know about the life of Changthang,
the nomadic life here,
know about it,
so we will meet soon in the next video,
till then,
I would like to thank you all,
and I would also like to thank,
the people of Changthang,
for showing us,
such a beautiful nomadic festival,
not only in India,
but to tell the world,
about the life of nomads,
we will meet soon in the next video,
till then, thank you.
