Wow
Unreal
Look how steep that mountain is. I feel like I'm in Champerey
What's up everybody welcome back to my channel
Today's video is going to be pretty rad because yesterday my buddy Dean Tennant and I rode down a brand new
1,000 meter descent. It's here in Hobbes BC
The trail is called First Blood and there has been a ton of hype about it
Our expectations were super high. So I'm not gonna spoil the video
All I can tell you is that definitely watch it till the end
Mountain biking in Hobbes was never really in the map. I've driven here countless of time
I've seen those steep beautiful mountains and always wonder why there is not really any riding here
But things are about to change because the tourism board here in Hobbes as well as the community has been pushing really hard
To have this exceptional trail as well as some others. So I think the future is really bright in Hobbes. Let's shred
It's pretty steep your brakes are gonna get hot
Probably get some brake fade. I'm gonna call them Paul
Yeah, you remember Paul eh?
Chevy, you excited to ride?
Okay, let's see what the hype is about
Hey Mike, why is this trail called First Blood by the way?
Have you seen the first Rambo movie with Sylvester Stallone called First Blood? Yeah. Yeah, it was filmed here in Hope on the way
Yeah, it's also the favorite beer of the trail crew last summer from the local brewery. Nice
Okay, buddy first blood trail a thousand meter of elevation in Hobbes BC
Here we go
Nice
Reminds me of the dirt in Whistler
Oh it's sick
Wow, that was a lot of work for the builders
Sick wow sleeper here. Yeah, that's that's really cool
It's a good use of the elevation
Wow, oh
dude
How good is that? Oh?
That was sick, man. Wow
like
It was so much work for the builders to make that bench cut
You can just tell the train was so hard to build it. Yeah, that's what Mike said
It's just like it's so steep here. You can't actually make an easy
Blue flow trail like it has to be a single black or double black. Yeah
Part two nice. Oh, yeah
That's so sick, so woodwork is epic
Oh
I miss this one. I
Was riding a bit close
Yeah, I was too close. I didn't see the
skinny I
actually thought that was a
Just a plank of wood like left over
Let's take a break. Oops, sorry I
Got splashed in the face. So is the GoPro still clean? It is actually. Yeah, my face isn't but
Wow
That's cool. What a trail
Okay back on track. I was gonna open the line as we mentioned the trail is still in in construction
Obviously for the ground opening everything will be completely free
Yeah, it's not an easy trail but
There is also no
Proper big moves on it, which makes it
pretty approachable for most people
Wow the woodwork
pretty I
Can't imagine how many hours
Went into that
All by hands
Pretty tight here
Wow
Yeah
Dude that was so sick
All that woodwork like they managed to make a
Terrain that seems like unrideable
Actually flow. Yeah
You can like once you know the trail like even without knowing like if you look far
far enough ahead you can like pump into those compression and there's very limited
Pedaling. Yeah
It's been really fun. I think it's tough to ride any new trail new but I think we're finding some flow in it
And once you get to like know this trail, you could really flow it. Yeah, and I mean
Whether you know the trail or not like looking ready ski
I was behind you and you went on the left as kind of a little leap
And I wasn't looking right enough, but I thought I could jump and then I see the rake. This is a rake. I
Was like, oh, why are you not jumping? Yeah, it looked like it was gonna be a nice jump when it's done. Yeah, it's gonna be cool
Whoa, that was a rake
This is sick
Yeah, dude
Wow
Big shout out to all the builders cuz
this is
One of the toughest built I've ever seen
Look how steep that mountain is
And we are
Just can't believe what we're riding today
It's like driving through power up last year. I
Was kind of picturing a trail that could look like this
and now
Having this like this dream a reality is amazing. I feel like I'm in Champerey
Unreal
Wow
So Mike told us that our brakes we're gonna start smelting
And they do
Because I think we are breaking a lot
Yeah, I think Jin is having too much fun. It doesn't want to stop
No, you're good you can continue just have fun
I'm enjoying it a lot. So
And I feel like we flow really nicely
Yeah, I did
So I peak
How's that?
Just sweeping turns down like steep loamy old growth like we drop so much elevation that was nuts
and I was told at some point we could see we could see that river and Mike mentioned that there is a split and
we can hike and
We can access to like a nice waterfall. So on the next lap, we should go and have a look. Yeah, definitely sounds good
back on track we gave
The old little answer a bit of a rest
When I ride like steep trail like this my heart rate usually stays really low unless I'm really pushing
But my hands start to give up before anything else
So I feel like my shoulder on my back. My legs don't even have time to get tired because my hands give up first
That was a bit of a feel of squamish right here
The top reminded me of Whistler with the vegetation the dirt and this a little bit more
Squamish just because we dropped some elevation
Wow, I need to remember to breathe in order to get more oxygen into my tiny arms
I'm glad you took a break
That's hard on the old forearms. Yeah, honestly like I
Have the perfect setup for arm pumps like I've got the one of v2 bar. This is actually the 50 millimeter bar
I've been playing with and I think I really like it on my spin drift puts me higher on a trail is this tip
It's really nice
As Dominion a for 200 millimeter disc. I mean those are incredible like that lever is so light
so much power modulation and the grip air gun
GDH and also
What is this that's a coil I've been playing with a DVO coil shock just to try to get a bit a
Bit more of a supple feel of the top and so far. I like it
Okay, I anticipated being the last section of the trail
And even this section of trail would have been very difficult to build
I was looking left because that might have been the trail to the waterfall
Wow
I'm not talking much because I'm really enjoying that
And I think here behind your computer you are as well. So I'll leave you in silence
Wow
So leave me in
In the comment below what you think of this because my mind is absolutely blown
Hey, buddy
Why a good dog?
dude
Absolutely unreal nice like
incredible like
Way past my expectation and my expectation. We are pretty high with all the hype, but this was insane. Thank you so much
Makes my day Wow. Thank you guys
Hey Chevy show me your tattoo
Nice he's a good builder too. He's a great builder
Mike thanks a lot for two things first of all the shuttle because I would have been a big pedal
But also all your trail work. So now what is the story behind first blood how everything came along?
well, my son and I were doing lots of mountain biking and he was always wanting me to
Take him down the valley to better mountain and that to do shuttle laps
And I was like, why should we do that when we have these beautiful mountains here?
so I approached the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association me and a couple friends and
We've got touch with Mike Woods great guy and he helped us getting the grant money and doing all the advocacy as
well as with
Cascade community forest they were tremendous and helping us get this project going and so you got the grants and
then
Which trail building company helped you to design and work on the trail first journey trails put in a master plan and
Program to build here and
They did an amazing job
Obviously, it's very tough building here and really steep. Yeah, it's a lot of traversing and
some big rocks
That's pretty wise. This trail is, you know a single black or double black diamond trail
It's because of the nature of the terrain like even if you wanted to make a blue flow trail
You probably couldn't write very difficult to build a blue or green here for sure
And also like as you are mentioning earlier like there are some tourism studies that say that
advanced mountain biker are more likely to travel to destination than
Intermediate or beginner mountain biker
so it's pretty a good way to grow the community with like more core mountain biking at first and
Then once this community of mountain biking here gets bigger then build more
You know blue
Green
Easier trail I guess to to appeal to the masses
That's definitely the goal to get more people riding here and more people stopping
Yeah, definitely because you probably saw like your entire life here like people coming from the interior of BC going towards
Vancouver, Whistler and the contrary people from Vancouver going towards the interior of BC and no one used to stop here
but I think this is a this is about to change the thing and make hop like
Mandatory stop for you know any mountain bike passionate and now just before we go for another lap
How many years that took from having the idea to having the trail open?
it's been about eight years of
planning and
Getting all the right
Stones in place and yeah, we're glad it's done
Well, thanks a lot for that and now let's go and reap a second lap
Okay, first blood of BC second lap this time I'm gonna leave
I hope you enjoyed it a big shout out to Mike as well as tourism up for supporting this project
It was truly incredible. It's pretty simple
You need to come to hop and ride this trail just the way it rides how long it is how beautiful the terrain is
