On a track which has seen racing for over a century, we are racing.
We are green and below sweeps in front of Malukas, who defends his position and McLaughlin immediately
up and into third place as we go three wide immediately through turn one.
Three wide in the middle, I think four wide in the back as Malukas tries to get it done
on the outside for the lead.
Look at Conor Daly there in the purple car three wide at the back and going big once
again and Conor Daly makes it work.
Big one at the back and that is Nolan Segal into the wall.
Looks like Nolan's the only car caught up in it.
At least the only car that stopped.
Might be damage on another machine.
Yeah, I'm fine.
I don't know what happened.
I'm sorry.
Take a look from the onboard.
Watch the left front here.
Yeah.
Well, I don't know.
I think a little clip.
Tiny.
I mean, he's not all the way over it, but a little bit onto that yellow.
I will say that that low is not the normal racing line, so all weekend with practice
and qualifying, there's just not rubber laid down there.
So Nolan going into uncharted territory on lap one, and he will regret it.
Purple seventy six does what he's been doing over and over on the ovals.
Go high early when the track is clean.
Just absolutely dumps New Garden and will power to the very best.
And then he comes up to Kyle Kirkwood and you would think here that discretion would
settle in.
But no, no, no.
Not on the first lap with Conor Daly.
It's got Dixon down there on the bottom.
Oh, is it a puff of smoke out of Dixon's car?
And then, oh, a spin, an almost spin from Rambo.
What a save.
Now he goes green flag waves below, punches it, and Malukas goes with him.
Malukas to the high line has momentum, but below has the line.
But on exit, Malukas keeps it stuck in there and takes the lead.
Wonderful move from little Dave.
James Schnabel, his engineer and also his strategist, Palau, is going to come through
lead change.
We'll revisit this in a moment.
Power had a close call just a minute ago.
That's a close call between Kirkwood and Rahal on board with power.
So he gets bulked by Graham.
Almost in the wall.
There's contact between the two of them.
For Malukas, solid stop for the AJ Foy Racing team, but it's taking time.
They've got a problem and losing all kinds of precious time in the car is back up on
the jacks as Palau comes down and a yellow has come out.
Oh, and that's willpower.
Willpower is often on track and wouldn't you know it, the lot for Alex Palau shows no sign
of disappearing.
Made it in just in time before that yellow flag.
Let's just see.
Trying to go around.
Kiffin Simpson gets up a little high, hits those marbles.
You see the second he gets into those marbles pretty hard into the wall in turn to potentially
a gearbox issue.
No, he did it again.
He tried to go into turn three, broke the tolling, probably on the initial contact.
Back to green through the final corner, Malukas will go with him and Malukas will try to get
that lap back and go back past him.
But with the form that Alex Palau has been in today, it's going to be tough as we get
back to racing ways and McLaughlin finds himself under pressure from Pato Award immediately.
Track sweepers have been busy, so the high line is clean now and drivers are taking advantage.
Look at Alexander Rossi three wide.
Suprema in the middle and on the bottom is Christian Lungard, Lungard who finds himself
up in fourth place, but now fifth as Rossi makes his way past.
I'm hearing that Will Power's day is over and here comes Newgarden.
Little wiggle on exit, has a good exit, has the inside line and now Newgarden has a podium
place.
Fantastic.
Here he is, sizing up Kyle Kirkwood, trying to fit between the wall.
Here we go.
Oh, that looks lovely.
Wow.
That's superb.
That is superb.
And this is Palau putting the move on Marcus Eriksson and they do touch, massive touch.
Keep an eye on this.
There's a very light sprinkle we're feeling of rain.
Yeah.
Look, of rain.
Rain drops on our window here in the booth as the caution comes out.
Yellow for raindrops.
The drivers have rolled the dice and gambled and come in for tires.
As I say, the drivers, but not all of them.
The both McLarens of O'Ward and Lundgaard, the two ECRs of Rossi and Rasmussen, but critically
the leader, Alex Palau, has not.
Lays down the hammer, smashes the throttle and gets this thing back to green.
Keep your eye on the orange and black McLarens.
Keep your eyes on the ECR cars and you know what, already it's advantage Alexander Rossi
who absolutely screams up and on the inside.
Palau has had a horrible restart.
Rossi has had an absolute blinder.
Rossi already side by side with Newgarden trying to make the pass for third going into
turn three.
Side by side, further back, Palau enjoying that advantage of lap cars in between them.
But these cars with fresh tires, Townsend, they are coming.
And here comes O'Ward, here comes Rasmussen on the inside of Stingray Robb.
So much action there with the fresh crew as Newgarden now trying to hang to the high side
to Kiffin Simpson.
It is crazy right in this section.
Finally makes his way past the Ganassi driver and Rossi will try to do the same and here
comes his teammate Rasmussen who gets past Pato O'Ward.
And here comes Rasmussen, Rasmussen around the outside of O'Ward.
It's now ECR 4-5.
Rossi looking at the back of Newgarden, Rasmussen looking at the back of Rossi and the McLarens
have dropped from their advantageous position and it is advantage ECR and here comes Rasmussen.
Rasmussen with some help from the draft off of Newgarden but this guy Rasmussen has been
on fire the last three laps.
Ed Carpenter the owner of both these machines looking on nervously, anxiously but also happy
to see them running up front.
And there is Newgarden, Rasmussen will not be contained, Rasmussen will not be held back.
Rasmussen going for Joseph Newgarden around the outside, vanishing point ahead, up and
on the inside now of Newgarden, oh Rasmussen is doing a blinding job, stunning.
He just dumped the king of the short ovals, Joseph Newgarden now gets passed by Rossi
but Rasmussen.
Oh, they've touched and I don't know if that means that he's gone and yeah I think something's
broken on the front right for Newgarden.
He's on the limiter, he's geared too short for that draft.
Doesn't matter, doesn't matter, around the outside and another position.
That is second, let's go is the call, let's go after Alex Pillow and take this victory,
Rasmussen's on fire.
For what could be victory for the very first time in this championship, he's right with
him, he's going to have to go the long way round, Rasmussen keeps it stuck in, Rasmussen
is gutsy, Rasmussen is brave.
Pillow hangs on, they run high and Rasmussen has the lead.
Holy cow, what a pass.
Nine to go now, keep it clean, keep it tidy, don't do anything you don't need to do, oh
my, wow.
And with one tourner to go, Christian Rasmussen is now an IndyCar race winner, sensational.
Bravo, bravo, what an exciting driver we have on our hands.
The 25-year-old from Copenhagen, Denmark wins.
Up next, it's the Porchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, Sunday August 31st at 2pm
Eastern on Fox.
