Welcome to Math with Mr. J.
In this video, I'm going to cover the
prime factorization of 24. Remember,
when it comes to prime factorization, we
break a number down into its prime
factors. These are the prime numbers
that multiply to equal the original
number. So, we are decomposing a number,
breaking a number down to only prime
numbers. So looking at 24, we need to
start breaking this down by thinking of
two factors, two numbers that multiply
to give us 24. Well, 2 and 12 are
factors of 24. 2 * 12 = 24. So let's
break this down into 2
and 12. Now you may be thinking 3 and 8
are factors of 24. 3 * 8 = 24 or 6 and 4
are factors of 24. 6 * 4 = 24 as well.
So could we have started with those
factors? Absolutely those work too.
Depending on the number there may be
different paths we can take but in the
end we will get the same prime numbers
and that's what's important. So there
can be multiple ways to do these. Keep
that in mind. And we go from here. So,
we want to continue to break this down
until we have all prime numbers. Two is
a prime number. So, we are done over
here. And I'm going to circle two to
show that we have a prime number. Now,
12 is a composite number. We can
continue to break 12 down. So, let's
think of two factors here for 12. Well,
2 and 6 are factors of 12. 2 * 6 = 12.
So, 2
and six. Two is prime. So, let's circle
that. But six is a composite number. So,
we can continue to break that down.
Let's think of two factors. Well, 2 and
3 are factors of six. 2 * 3 = 6. So,
let's break this down to two and three.
2 is prime and three is prime. So, we
are done. This is the prime
factorization of 24. And we can write
this out as 24
equals. And then I'm going to write our
prime numbers in order from least to
greatest. And we're multiplying here. So
we have 2
* 2
* 2
* 3. If we have the correct prime
numbers, they will multiply to equal our
original number. Let's check. 2 * 2 is 4
* 2 is 8 * 3 is 24. So we are correct.
So there you have it. There's the prime
factorization of 24. I hope that helped.
Thanks so much for watching.
Until next time, peace.
