Our latest dual sport adventure ride was a family affair: three generations set out together to explore the Willamette National Forest in search of the largest monolith (one solid rock) in Oregon: Wolf Rock! My daughter (on her Honda CRF110F), my dad (on his Suzuki DR200S), and I (on my Honda CRF250L) rode our off road motorcycles on miles of well-maintained forest service roads and some not at all maintained abandoned logging roads as we tried to find a route through the forest to Wolf Rock. Along the way, Google Maps failed us on the navigation front and we had to do some old-fashioned exploring to find the right route through the woods to our destination. Eventually, though, our long ride ended at our original destination, Wolf Rock. Along the way, we found several epic forest views culminating in a great spot to stop, eat lunch, and take in the nearly 1000 foot tall natural wonder in the heart of the Willamette National Forest. Come along on our motorcycle adventure ride!
Hello everyone, welcome back to the dork side. It is I, your friendly neighborhood
dork, in my truck on the way to go riding, and today I'm headed up to the McCoy
OHV area near Detroit, Oregon.
So I'm headed out to the McCoy OHV area, which is actually a
snowmobile area in the winter, so it's not a lot of trails from what I
understand. It's mostly gravel roads, but there are amazing views of the lake and
Mount Jefferson, I've been told. So I'm excited to go scout it out and ride
around a bit on the CRF, because if it is what I've been led to believe it
is, I feel like it would be a great place to take the kid, and she can just ride
around on her dirt bike on gravel roads as she gets used to the motorcycle
before we start doing any more serious trail stuff. I just thought I'd bring
you guys along on the ride, trying out my... this is the windshield mount for the
GoPro. Hopefully it doesn't look too awful. If it does, it won't be in the
video, cuz I will not use the footage!
McCoy! See the signs right here? McCoy Creek Road. Hell yeah. Here we go!
Staging area. Let's do it. What do you think? Park like right over here by the snowmobile?
here we are. McCoy OHV slash snowmobile area. There are no maps available in the
staging area, so we are truly exploring today. Just got my phone out in case I
need to Google Map the things, but we're mostly out here making it happen on our
own. Some dispersed camping sites it looks like. So like I said, I've never
been out here, but I hear there are many, many good viewpoints with ample, generous
scenic views of Mount Jefferson. There's a road off to the side on one of these
that goes up the mountain a little bit, which we will check out. I bet the wind noise
is really bad. Sprint. 606. There we go. That's what I'm looking for. Not paved.
Yeah, this is definitely not a gravel road. I mean, this is... I wouldn't bring my
truck up here. This should be fun. Lots of brush.
Clink, clink, clink. What do you think? I think... I'm glad I have double-tech mirrors.
They're taking a beating. This could be a very interesting day. Wow, it's pretty
over there. I've seen some views already. I want to go up more. It's definitely more
exploring and less technical riding, I'm guessing, today. Just fine. I like the
exploring stuff, too. Look at this dank, dark cave. My headlight's actually working
right now. I'm sorry. It's not a lot of speed when you're trying to avoid
branches. Goggles are a must, so that's good. These branches are not going to survive.
Okay. I guess all these branches are dead in the winter, right? What a fun little trail.
It's longer than I was expecting. I'm bringing that branch with me. You know,
they say that visor... the peak on these dual sport helmets is to protect you
from roost and from sun. Right now, it's protecting me from branches. I should
put my head down when I get close to one, and it deflects it. There's a downed
tree. Little bridge. I had some questions about whether or not I thought the tank
bag, this giant lube bag, was going to get in the way. I'm not standing up and
moving around a lot, but I am ducking down a ton, and I'm not even noticing
it's there, so that's a plus. Seriously. I wasn't wearing goggles. That one caught
my peak and almost ripped my head off. Huh. This is interesting. I don't know if
I'm going up or getting close to a cool view or what. I hope so. I hope there's a
payoff. Oh, we're going down now. Huh. Weird. Somebody skidded to a stop right here.
Head first. This is it. This is the end. Well, I'm certain there's a gorgeous view right
over there. I'm certain. At the end of that road. All right. Well, that's at least
accurate. Back off we go. Same ----. Different day, eh, rabbit? Yeah, that one
sucked. Oh, could you guys hear that? It's just nailing me on the head. This one sucks.
So, I'm field testing the Diablo Pro tank bag today, and the fender bag is on
there, too. Can you see it? Giant lube fender bag. So, see how they hold up out
here. All my camera gear is in this bag, and I ditched the tail bag today because
I got my compressor in my backpack, and all my tire changing stuff is in the, uh,
is in the tank, is in the fender bag. This is a pretty good shot right here.
Not too shabby. I realize it's technically a road because it has a
number, but this is a trail. All right. Well, one trail down. That was 606. Now we're
getting some shots. Look at that. They are doing some trimming up here.
Returning right here, bro. I'm gonna go from this way. You're good, bud. All right.
Here we go. Second trail. Second road, really. I'm much higher up now. That guy was
very courteous. Okay. Gets a little narrower. Right in here. This is it. This is the
whole thing. This is not the road I thought I was on. Okay, so back up and to
the left. Oh, yeah. That's the worst that's ever been hit. Try this one. Maybe I'll
try to go back and find that road. Maybe I just missed it. Yeah, this one looks
like it goes up to a landing. Shotgun shells. I've never dealt with this much
foliage before. Oh, there's a chair, so that's not creepy at all. Is that it? Man, these
are disappointing. Let's go find the other one. I think we're too far down for scenic
vistas so far. Let's see who keeps going up. Dude, this guy's kicking ass. Look at this
thing. It's awesome. It does real well. I'm not riding under there. Look at that
blade. F***ing crazy. Thanks, buddy. Where does it go? Right is not on the map.
That's second. I'm gonna have to pass him again. He's gonna get real tired of me.
Oh, branch. Now we're going up. Okay. Promising. There's a big-ass tree.
Hello, Mr. Tree. Sorry about you falling down. Everything's a little moist, too, so
there's no dust. Super nice. There's a little stream bed right here. Most technical thing
I've hit so far. I'll be jinxing myself saying ---- like that. That's it? Huh. Well, I mean,
these are decent camp spots. Like, you packed up and rode. You could ride down
that easy. I think it's legal to camp out here.
My guy. He's gonna be pissed to see me. Shelter one. Let's go this way. Bullfrog
route number eight. That's not it. That's just a big mud pit. That could be fun.
Oh, ---- biscuits. Now we're going up now. Roads are all graded, so they're flat for
snowmobiles, which is great, except graders leave these ruts. Tempur-Butte
route number four. There's a shelter. Let's look at the shelter and then
Tempur-Butte. Sounds like it might be high and pretty. Well, they want me going
down there, which makes me want to go down there. There's an outhouse. This is the
snowmobile shelter. Kind of cool.
You
Starting to rain a little? Forecast called for a few sprinkles, maybe even a
thunderstorm or two, so this isn't a surprise. I'm not, like, fully kitted for
rain, but my jacket's waterproof when the vents are closed, which they're not.
This bag is waterproof. My pants are water-resistant, and if it gets real bad,
we either head to the truck or we'll go sit in the shelter for a little bit,
because they're just supposed to be passing showers. I don't mind a little
rain. Like, I don't want to get soaked, but I don't mind getting a little wet. Oh, that
looked like a good view. Look at this. Too bad all you can see is rain. I moved my phone to the
tank bag because I didn't bring my poncho for it. When I came to ride, damn
it. If it gets too wet, I'll close up these vents. That's a view. That is a view.
I'm hoping it's a passing shower. If I get up on top of this, I'll have a good idea
how big it is. Look at that, you guys. Are you seeing this? I'm gonna roll backwards so you can
see it better. Holy crap nuggets. Doesn't look like too much of a storm, but that's
good. Wow. Pretty cool. Welcome to Oregon.
Oh, it's going back down. Weak. Oh yeah, it's totally going back down. I really wish I had a map.
Well, maybe I should go the other way. The other trail appeared to go up, and
this one's going down. I don't want to go down. I want to go up. Yeah, it sure looks like we're going.
Lamesauce. Outterson. Alright, there's the shelter again. This one goes the right
direction. Oh yeah, now we're going up. That's good. I can't believe it's summer and this is the
weather. Crazy rain. Welcome to Oregon. Look at this. Look at it. It's like all the
views are so good. I mean, we're stopping taking pictures anymore. They're all gonna
look the same. Oh, these ruts suck balls. I'm rattling my chain off. Man, I bet this is
hella fun on a snowmobile in the winter. There it is. There's a mountain. Look at
this. Look at this. Man, I hate these clouds right now. I hate them. Holy crap.
That's magnificent. That is magnificent. Magnificent. Magnificent. This is an
amazing campsite right here. Oh my god.
Look at this cool rock face. That's a lava flow. That's awesome. I need to watch the
road. A big rock. More lava flow. Oh, that's pretty cool.
Oh, clouds. Why are you doing this to me, clouds? How gorgeous would this be on a clear
day? I gotta come back. Bring the kid. This stuff is so easy to get to. Can't hardly
see it. So, overall, so far, I think this is a great place to bring the kid because
the trails aren't technical. They're not even trails, they're just roads. The views are
amazing. Unforgettable. Seriously. What have we here? Let's investigate. That's
probably a good spot, too. Oh, it's sketchy. Wrong gear. Even better, downshifting. It's a
little technical. Washed out. Wasn't prepared. CRF, though. Just rolls right up.
Doesn't care. Wrong gear, don't care. Oh, here we go. Here we go. The top, I'm
betting. Hoping, guessing, praying. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Look at this. Look at this.
Clearing up down there. Well, let's look, and then there's a campsite, too. Looks like
a really uncomfortable bench. Beautiful. This isn't terrible. No, it isn't. That's gorgeous.
Look over there. That's the mountain again. Look at this, guys. I say look at this a lot.
It's usually when I want you to look at something. Jefferson's over there. Come all the way back
around the mountain. It's amazing. This is why you buy one of these bikes. Seriously.
What can't it do? All right. Let's see what else is along this ridge. It's good times.
Man, this is a kick-ass view over there. This ridge is very high. Oh, it goes down
and back up again. Okay, this could be good. Ooh, this looks promising. This road is beat
to ----. I run off. Oh, that was wet. And now I am wet. Huh, goes back around again.
Does it go up to the top top? Get around the other side. We can see the mountain. Oh, bush.
Watch where you're going, bro. Stop staring at the view. You're going to become part of it.
Oh, this is a campsite. Wow, what a campsite. I could almost get up here on the versus,
except for that one sketchy part. Wow, it's pretty. It's damn pretty. You can see the
mountain. It's on the other side of this hill. And away we go. Man, the sun coming out is
nice right now. You seeing this? Probably not. Look at that. Look at it. There's Mount
Jefferson. It'll look real good from the other side when I get back up there now, because
it's not all cloudy. A decent shot of the mountain. Looks real good, you guys. Go back
around down that sketchy part and then see if the view of the mountain has cleared up
any, because I'm guessing it has. I can see the corner of it. I'm very excited. Should
have come up here in the first place instead of going down all those weird, sketchy side
trails. That's fun, too. It's just not getting the payoff at the end. Different kind of fun.
Damn, there it is. This whole section of road sucks. Yeah, there's the sketchy part. Oh,
yeah, the right side's way better. Why didn't I just come up that way? Because I'm stupid.
That's pretty good. Whoa, corrosive. Beautiful.
All right, everyone. Well, I'm headed back to the parking lot. It's been a rainy adventure
day. Got some really good pictures and really beautiful views here at the McCoy Snowmobile
slash OHV Park. Some great shots of Mount Jefferson. So I had a really good time. It
was really fun exploring, and I can't wait to bring the kid back here. So I just want
to say thank you all for watching, and as always, please do not forget to be excellent
to each other. I think. Still the only truck in the parking lot, it looks like. Excellent!
