In a tumultuous period of Chinese history, Mao Tse-tung was part of the Communist movement. Over 30 years, he slowly rose through the ranks of the communists, ultimately becoming their supreme leader and winning the civil war against Chinag Kai-shek's Nationalists of the KMT. While the West was taken aback, Mao went ahead with various policies to create a strong nation, most of which backfired over time. He died in 1976 and was replaced by the moderniser Deng Xiaoping.
