The Mystical Udumbara
Composed by Yuan Gao
Conducted by Milen Nachev
Ancient Buddhist scriptures speak of the udumbara flower, which blooms only once every three thousand years. Against a background of plucked harp strings, woodwinds gasp in discovery of the tiny white blossom. Its appearance signifies the return of a great figure: the Buddhist "Holy King Who Turns the Wheel", who is said to bring the world salvation. The light pipa and elegant erhu extol the flower's subtle, ethereal beauty. A change in tonality and entrance of the violins allow the andante section to reach its climax. Short violin strokes characterize a lively dance section, until brass and timpani join in, in joyful reverence.
