Selena Gomez Stopped by The Cruz Show to talk with Jackie Ramirez about her new single & album + they talked about mental health, breaking up via text & a possible collaboration with Karol G
Taking you back down memory lane right now.
Oh my god.
Selena Gomez is on the cruise show.
Real Night 2 3.
That was so cool.
Yeah, shout out to DJ Fuse.
He put that intro together.
He always does that for every artist.
But literally, this was my favorite one because right off the bat, I just want to tell you,
you have always been my it girl.
I grew up watching you.
So for this moment, full circle moment for me.
The single, Single Soon is out now.
I mean, you've already talked about it a little bit and you said like this whole intro was
like your whole life.
What's something that you've taken within the writing process of Single Soon that's
like, I'm where I'm at now?
Well, the funny thing is that I actually wrote this song about like six years ago.
So it was originally gonna be on my last album, but it didn't really match where I was.
I'm 31 now.
I'm good on my own.
I love my life.
My friends are my everything, like making music, doing what I love.
That's what it's about.
And I'm so happy.
And it just feels like it's something right.
Yeah.
No, and it definitely feels that way too.
I did want to ask because like in the very beginning of the song, it's like talking about
like, okay, should I write a note?
Should I leave it in your jacket?
Have you ever broken up with someone by text?
Because I have.
I actually never have.
No.
Okay.
I definitely like I try to do the awkward avoiding kind of thing.
Okay.
But I'm pretty good at sucking it up, I guess.
And with Single Soon, do you write those type of songs?
Because you have a very close relationship with your sister.
And I love seeing that on social media.
I think everybody does.
Do you write stuff like Singles Soon with her in mind to empower her to like, hey, being
single is okay.
I think she's a huge reason that this album, you know, is actually coming to fruition.
I'm just so proud of who she is.
And I wanted to make this whole album fun, like I really did.
And all of it's just meant to make you move, meant to make you feel something.
Nothing's going to bring you down.
And I just I'm really excited to see what people think of the new stuff.
Yeah, no.
And I'm super excited too.
That album.
Were you recording any of the songs in Paris?
Because I know you did give us a little sneak peek on Instagram.
Yeah, I was doing some some touch ups.
Yeah, it was fun.
That's awesome.
And like, I want to go back to because in your documentary, which was amazing, by the
way, in the closing minute, you said, I'm at peace.
I'm angry.
I'm sad.
I'm confident.
I'm full of doubt.
I'm a work in progress.
Is that still true?
Of course.
I think I'll always be that.
Yeah.
And it's just more about having a relationship with myself and understanding what is good
for me and what's not good for me.
I think it'll always be a process growing up and figuring it all out.
But I'm so grateful that I walked through some of the hardest moments in my life and
I got out of it.
Is that what's something that you would say to 20 year old Selena now that you're you're
in your 30s?
That you're like, girl, really, really doing this right now?
No, I don't have any regrets.
I think if anything, I would just probably remind myself that I don't have to try that
hard.
That's a good one.
I feel like we're always so hard on ourselves, especially like with social media and like
just with our mental health, too.
I mean, you're a huge advocate for mental health.
I know that everybody like very much knows that.
And it's so awesome to see that because even through Rare Beauty, the Rare Beauty Fund,
you know, you're advocating for mental health and that's so important to you.
And I just love seeing that.
Thank you so much.
Yeah.
And then also, too, I saw that you were with Carol G on your Instagram.
Is there any chance that we could see a collab come in?
I mean, maybe.
Maybe.
I mean, that would be iconic.
Have you guys ever even talked about that?
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Yeah.
I love her.
She just like we bonded over my birthday.
And ever since then, she's just been like that, that girl is awesome.
Honestly, those birthday pictures, I was like, I opened it and I literally showed my boyfriend.
I was like, this is what I want to be like.
This is what I want to look like.
It was amazing.
I hope the birthday party was great.
It was great.
And then, like I said, Rare Beauty, honestly, all the products are amazing.
What does it mean for you to be like, you know, one of those really like, I guess, pretty
much very few Latinas that make beauty products for people like us?
Yes.
I think I honestly, I'm beyond thrilled of what we've been able to do.
I mean, the moment we started, we came out with 48 shades.
That's something that was always crucial from the beginning.
And it doesn't matter, you know, what you like a lot of makeup, a little makeup, whatever
it is.
It's I didn't want it to be Selena Gomez, I wanted it to be Rare Beauty and the products
are really good.
And that's what I stand by.
But at the same time, a percentage of the sales goes to the mental health impact fund
that I've started.
So it's just it's been such a gift, honestly, I'm so grateful.
Yeah.
And it's so cool because you can like do what you love to do.
And you said it in your documentary, too, where you want music to be that gateway of
doing what it is that you're passionate about.
And that's so amazing.
And going back to the single, you said it was written six years ago.
Do you even remember the writing process for it?
No, I do.
It was really fun.
And I just remember feeling like one of my girlfriends was single and I, I was in a place
in my life where, you know, every girl goes through it's devastating being single, but
I was going through a little bit of that and she was just so happy being single and I and
I craved that.
I really I understand that now.
Yeah, it's been five years since I've been in a relationship.
So I'm so used to myself and getting to know who I am is the most important part.
And it's funny because like I had posted, you know, on my Instagram story, once you
had dropped the visuals and everything and my boyfriend texted me, he's like, hey, we're
good.
Right.
I was like, yeah, I'm just reposting Selena.
It's fine.
It's totally OK.
Like, I promise it's not.
Yeah.
No, it's totally OK.
But the the studio session, do you like have to have people around you or is it just you
and.
No, no.
I definitely prefer working with just my engineer and myself.
Producers do come in every now and then, obviously, there's some, too, but I like doing
it.
Well, we're super excited for what's to come.
I'm super excited.
I can't tell you how much I really love you and admire you.
It's been a pleasure.
