Hi, welcome to our offbeat Mandarin lessons for absolute beginners.
I am Leo.
In this video, we are going to learn the basics of Mandarin grammar.
When we talk about grammar, the most important thing to understand is word order.
Word order refers to the sequence in which words are arranged to form a sentence.
Let's start with an example in English.
I love you.
This simple sentence follows the basic word order of subject, verb, object, or SVO for short.
If we break down the English sentence I love you, the subject I comes first,
followed by the verb love, and finally the object you comes last.
This is the basic word order for English.
Now let's look at the same sentence in Mandarin Chinese.
I love you.
Let's break it down to keep it simple.
我 means I or me.
爱 means 乐.
你 means you.
So the sentence follows the same pattern.
The subject 我 comes first, followed by the verb I, and the object 你 is positioned last.
Now let's see another example.
In English, the sentence is
He likes apples.
Here the order is subject, he, followed by the verb likes, and finally the object apples.
This is also SVO word order.
The same sentence in Mandarin is
Let's break it down.
他 means he or him.
喜欢 means likes.
苹果 means apples.
As we can see, Mandarin also follows the SVO word order in statements.
So the word order for statement sentences in Mandarin is the same as in English.
Now you might ask,
Leo, what about other types of sentences like questions or exclamations?
Good question.
I know you're curious, but we'll cover those in future videos.
