At first instance you might not be able to spot a difference between this plane
and those you're used to seeing. But this is not your usual aeroplane. Unlike other
planes this is powered by electricity. Yes, a plane that runs on a battery. This
is Alia CX-300. World's first all-electric plane which has just clocked a
In a breakthrough for sustainable aviation, Vita Technologies' Alia CX-300 has become
the first all-electric aircraft to successfully fly passengers covering a 130 km route in
the US at a cost of just Rs. 694 or $8. The plane flew for 30 minutes from East Hampton
to New York's JFK Airport carrying 4 passengers. A historic first for both the New York Port
Authority and the broader electric aviation sector.
Compared to a similar trip via helicopter, the trip cost is dead cheap. In fuel cost
alone such a trip in a helicopter would amount to Rs. 13,000 or $160.
Commenting on the achievement, Kyle Clark, founder and CEO of Vita Technologies said
that charging the plane and flying it resulted in a bill of just $8. However, the cost of
the plane, maintenance, and pilot have not been added to the final figure.
Beyond the cost, the electric aircraft are a delight to fly in as they are silent. With
no roaring engines or fuel combustion, passengers were able to hold conversations with ease.
A potential game-changer for short-haul business or commuter air travel and something very
difficult to do without headphones in a helicopter.
Vita Technologies, based in Vermont, has been developing electric aviation since 2017. It
recently raised $318 million in funding to accelerate the production, certification,
and commercial rollout of its fleet. The CX-300, designed for conventional take-off and landing,
is expected to receive FAA certification by the end of the year.
The aircraft can fly up to 250 nautical miles or about 463 km on a single charge, positioning
it as a strong contender for short intracity and intercity routes.
While the CX-300 leads in the conventional aircraft category, Vita is also developing
the Alia 250 EVTOL, a vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed for urban mobility.
Vita's success comes amid growing competition in the electric aviation sector. Archer Aviation,
for instance, was recently announced as the official air taxi partner for the 2028 Olympics
with plans to launch network operations by 2026, pending FAA certification.
With dramatically lower operating costs, reduced noise and zero emissions, the technology could
reshape the future of mobility in ways similar to how electric vehicles have transformed
road transport.
