Bored chickens are unhappy, which in turn can lead to fewer eggs and more bullying within the herd.
Here are three ideas for employment that I use to keep your chickens busy, happy and hopefully lay more eggs.
First of all, and that is probably one of my absolute favorite topics, is a chicken coop.
In case you didn't know, you can usually buy chicken coop blocks in your local food store, where I also buy them,
or I think you can also get them on Amazon, but they are quite expensive.
I personally get you one of these delicious snacks and hang it on the food supply.
When you pick it up, it swings and you have a lot of fun.
In addition, they provide you with a lot of nutrients and minerals that you need.
This is an alternative to chicken scratchers.
I always leave mine outside, but if you have problems with not eating your food,
because they give you a flock block, you can take it away again in the morning.
Take it away in the evening, clean up after going to bed, feed,
and after eating you come out again around 1 or 2 p.m. and give the flock block for the night.
So I have no problem with you eating after I have given you a flock block.
This is something we let our chickens and trouts have access to, and I have been doing this for months for them
and I am absolutely thrilled with the results we have given them with flock.
I have also found that the hanging flock prevents mold and other things from forming on the underside,
where it is normally on the ground.
I know I don't cover mine, but we have almost 40 birds that have access to this block.
So they eat it pretty quickly and I don't see any reason to cover it.
But if you feel like you have to cover your block to protect it from the weather, then you do.
And since my chickens have free-range, I let them dig their own dust bath holes, among other things.
They dig these holes everywhere in the yard.
Here is one that they have not used for a while, which is why grass grows there again.
But you can see it over here, it goes all the way up and then it just falls off here.
Do you see the little hill you have there?
They don't use it anymore, but I let them dig their own dust baths.
They have a few over there by the peach trees.
And I let them dig their own, because I don't feel like I have to take the time to build them bath holes.
And they will probably dig their own anyway.
So I just let them do it.
Here is an example that they have been using for a short time.
And something that I also do, is that I go around from time to time and sprinkle a little diet tomato manure in our dust bath holes.
Do you want to know why?
Below you will find a video about why we put diet tomato manure in their sand baths.
And it is also explained how to do it right.
But yes, I let them dig their own desk bath holes and sprinkle diet tomato manure in them.
And that really helps them to stay busy and be happy.
Trout hens do that too.
M, a lot of it also applies to trout hens.
Because we have trout hens that live with our chickens and they seem to be just as busy as the chickens.
Last but not least, we provide them with Gruptera.
Gruptera is the black soldier fly larry.
M, and you get it in all possible bag sizes.
M, but that keeps them very busy.
So what I do with it, is that I just sprinkle it on the ground every now and then, which I did for them this morning.
I spread it all over the garden for them.
And that keeps them busy, because they spend most of the day just walking through the garden and looking for these larvae.
Well, I don't give it to them every day.
M, I give it to them once or twice a week at the moment.
And they are, as you can see, very busy looking for these goodies.
The reason why I fly Gruptera compared to other brands of black soldiers, larry,
is that Gruptera helps them produce stronger egg shells and keeps their feathers healthy.
It also provides them with 75% more calcium than mealworms.
That's why I almost never fly mealworms compared to black soldiers, larry.
Unless it's a herd I don't want to lay eggs in.
You can also see the vitamin nutrients.
That gives them a very good source of protein that chickens need.
Chickens are all eaters, not plant eaters.
They also need meat, just like us.
Another reason why I prefer Gruptera to other brands is that this brand does not make or produce any of their maggots in China.
None of their black soldiers fly larry comes from China, which is important to me.
And it's literally just dried black soldiers fly larry, as you can see here.
And my chickens love this stuff.
And you can even feed them with your hand.
They love it too.
See how happy they are.
Even my rooster wants it.
And to make them feel good and happy, I just spread it all over the yard.
I just go out from time to time and spread a few handfuls of it in the yard.
And they will look for it and spend a while with it.
And that keeps them busy.
It distracts them.
Prevents each other from feathering and bullying.
It provides them with the nutrients they need to lay more eggs.
And when they are busy, they lay more eggs because they are happier.
They are less stressed.
I can highly recommend the brand GrubTerra if you want to get larvae of the black soldier fly.
We also feed that to our roosters and our ducks, ducks and geese.
They all love the stuff.
I think you can also give it to fish and reptiles.
If you want some of it, I'll leave you my link and a discount code in the description and in the posted comment.
Be sure to check it out.
That's it.
These are some ways you can distract your chickens and make them happy so they don't get bored all day.
This will prevent less bullying, less stress in their herd and more eggs.
It also contributes to the general health of your chicken herd.
So be sure to check out GrubTerra in the description and pin it as a comment.
