In November 2021, Egypt marked the grand reopening of Luxor’s ancient Avenue of Sphinxes—a 2.7 km (1.7-mile) processional road lined with over 1,000 ram‑headed and human‑headed sphinx statues—after more than seven decades of restoration. The lavish ceremony featured a spectacular reenactment of the Opet Festival, with performers in pharaonic attire, symphonic music, illuminated temples, floats, horse-drawn carriages, hot‑air balloons, and fireworks. A highlight was the symbolic procession of three golden pharaonic-style boats carrying shrines of the Theban triad (Amun‑Ra, Mut, Khonsu). President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi officiated the event, which aimed to revive Luxor as the world’s largest open‑air museum and rejuvenate tourism after the pandemic
