You're watching Homeworthy, where we believe every home has a story.
My name is Ann Pulliam. I'm an interior designer, and we're here at my home in Richmond, Virginia.
I grew up in Richmond and moved away to Washington, D.C. for about 12 years.
And then we had our second baby and wanted to move back to Richmond, where I'm from.
And we spent a little over a year trying to find the perfect house.
We wanted something that was old, that hadn't been touched yet and still had all the character.
And we were able to find this home perched up on a little hill in the city of Richmond.
And the moment we walked in, I fell in love.
What kind of drew me to this house, the moment I fell in love with it, is we opened the front door and I looked in the foyer.
And there were random-width heart of pine floors that were creaky and well-loved.
And right then and there, even before we really stepped foot into the house, I was like, this is it.
And then we stepped down into the living room, and there's 10-foot tall ceilings and this charming fireplace.
And the plaster walls, I just knew it was the house.
OK, so here we're in our foyer.
As you can see, these are the floors that kind of sold me on the house, so random-width pine floors.
We use this space really just to store coats and kind of welcome people into our home.
I also display this awesome photograph that I got from Bond Mellon Gallery here in Richmond.
She is a local art curator and owns this wonderful gallery.
And this kind of sets the tone for a house, a little unexpected and fun.
And then a couple other things to note of our foyer.
I added some grass cloth on the ceiling to kind of add some interest to the space.
And we have a really fun flush mount from Visual Comfort.
But the grass cloth is kind of this toffee tonal that adds a little warmth and texture.
All right, and now we're going to head into our little makeshift mudroom.
So coming into this space, the previous owner used it as kind of a sitting area.
But because I have two young children, we needed a mudroom.
And since we don't have a lot of closet space in this old home, we have decided to use a space for that.
So we anchored this room with this old sideboard that I got from an antiques shop here in Richmond.
And I've got this awesome, fun, colorful Bunny Williams lamp.
And then what anchors this whole space is this mirror that was my great grandmother's that I love so dearly.
It's very special to me.
And then again, my friend Britt with Gilded Lily decided to add this kind of fun swag over the mirror to add just a little greenery and something a little fun for this space.
And I've also got these two portraits of my kids that I love dearly.
They're from an artist based in Atlanta.
Sarah Beth, I believe is her name.
And they're these really fun collages and kind of captured this special age that I loved so much.
To add a little bit more decoration from our sideboard, I've got these white ceramic Christmas trees from Target.
I love a little high-low.
And then we've got I have these hand-blown candlestick holders.
I've got a couple of my dining room as well.
They're from a boutique little store in D.C. called The Gathered Line.
And she makes these really beautiful hand-blown pieces that I love.
On the opposite wall, you can see our makeshift mudroom.
We have added hooks where we keep a lot of the coats.
And there's a basket for kids' shoes and a bench for everyone to, you know, the crazy of school.
This is where we get everyone ready and put on their shoes.
And then I've got this awesome bulletin board.
This used to be an exterior door that the previous owner closed up.
And there was just a window AC unit that they ended up taking out.
And so this just had some bead board here.
And I ended up adding just a bulletin board because we wanted a space to display kid art.
And this time of year, this is where we display all of our Christmas cards and some of our kids' Christmas art from years past.
We haven't done anything structural to the house yet.
We will one day.
But for this phase of life with kids running around and then being destructive, all we've done is brought in antiques, family antiques, antiques I've collected over time.
And we just put up a ton of art and brought in some colorful pieces.
So the goal was to bring character into this house.
You know, I've been collecting art for a very long time, collecting art that I didn't necessarily have a place for.
And this house has kind of given us that opportunity to showcase a lot of our art
And recover a bunch of antiques that we've had and pieces of furniture that I've collected along the way.
So it's kind of just a smattering of items that have been in my inventory.
And I gave them a lot of love with some beautiful fabrics.
All right. And now we're going to head into my teeny tiny little kitchen.
Follow me.
So now we're heading into our little kitchen, our butter yellow kitchen.
This kitchen was like this when we moved in.
And we have not touched it because we have plans to kind of expand in the future.
But it's quirky and charming.
And it kind of sets a tone for this house as well.
The cabinets were like this beautiful butter yellow, which is so unexpected and fun.
I would have never picked it.
But it's one of my favorite things about the home.
We had some we inherited some pretty wild tile.
And in the vein of trying to do some cheap and cheerful kind of touch ups before we actually renovate.
I ended up just doing peel and stick tile here to add a little cleanliness.
So the ceiling is also original.
We've got some chip paint, but it's beautiful.
And it adds to kind of the heart and the soul of the house.
We've got this fun Roman shade.
The fabric is from Adeline.
It's a British textile company that I love.
And the light fixture is also a British company called Duval.
It's got a really beautiful ceramic shade to kind of just play into the time period of this kitchen.
I really feel like, you know, when we first walked into this kitchen, it really felt like we were stepping back into time.
With the older appliances.
But, you know, the yellow cabinets and kind of the galley style kitchen with this big oversized window.
It just is kind of a throwback to the 30s when this house was built.
And it's something that we really love.
I'm going to bring the kids in a little bit and we're going to decorate some cookies.
But they love decorating cookies.
And the great thing about this kitchen is we can just make a mess and it doesn't matter.
You know, we lovingly call this house our little cottage.
It feels like a storybook cottage.
It's kind of tucked away.
The property is, even though it's in the city, it's quite large for being in the city.
And there's a lot of mature landscaping.
So it makes us feel like we're in this little storybook.
And I love it.
And our backyard is amazing.
And we've got a little boxwood garden.
And yeah, we love it.
It's everything I could have ever wanted.
And I can't wait to take a new spin on it one day and restore it even more.
OK.
So heading into our dining room.
This is the room that we spend a ton of time in.
It's right off the kitchen in the living room.
This space is one of the spaces I fell in love with because there is a fireplace in here.
So we love lighting fires and we have dinner parties.
We use this space to eat family dinner.
We don't have a breakfast nook.
So we're normally eating in here.
So nothing is too precious.
There are little stains and well-marked little pieces of love all over this space.
But all of the items I've put in here are meant to age and patina.
And so nothing is too precious.
My favorite part of this space is this 18th century Swedish cabinet with the original paint.
I got it from a shop in D.C. called Marson Loose.
It's no longer around.
But I love it.
We use it as our bar.
So I've got liquor and glassware and all of our party supplies kind of tucked into here, which I love.
This piece was my grandmother's.
And these baskets I kind of have scattered throughout our house.
We don't have a ton of storage.
So this basket, for example, has firewood and little knickknacks that we use for outside.
As you can probably tell, we have a lot of art in this home.
I have been collecting art since the beginning of time.
You know, I find something.
And if I love it, I get it.
And I find a space for it later.
This piece behind me is one piece I actually had commissioned.
One of my friends, Nancy Brown, is a photographer based in Richmond.
She's super talented at really capturing kind of the essence of relationships and children.
And she took this one of my youngest child and I, David.
And then my friend, who is also an artist here, a portrait artist, Lexie Vansilo.
She did a pastel painting on this brown paper.
So it's casual and fun.
And it is just a really special kind of prized possession that we now have.
And then moving into the other side of the dining room.
This is kind of one of our favorite fixtures of this space.
The fact that we would have a wood-burning fireplace in our dining room makes dinner parties really fun.
And it really helps set the mood with the ambient light.
My friend, Britt, helped me do this garland above.
And we added some fun bows.
Something that was important to me was to not make our decor feel super Christmassy and a little unexpected.
And I have a lot of color in this house.
And so she came up with the idea of doing these different kind of like jewel-tone ribbons that are velvet that I love.
Above the fireplace is a photograph, another photograph from Bond Mill and Gallery here in Richmond.
And this space opens up to our backyard.
And I loved having kind of this photograph anchor this space to kind of mimic what's going on behind us.
And then we've got our dining table right here.
It's actually a marble tulip top table.
But during the holidays, I like to add a tablecloth to make it feel a little more special.
These dining chairs are from Loft Antiques based in Atlanta.
And they are a 19th century neoclassical Italian chairs that have been bleached with a fun chartreuse velvet.
Again, you can see some of these candle holders,
hand-blown candle holders and bud bases that I use as candle holders from the Gathered line.
These are in the green color that I love.
And behind us, you can see I've got a church pew that is from Monumental Church here in Richmond.
And since our home is not very large and this dining room is not that big and our dining table is not that large and we love to entertain,
it was important to me to have some kind of overflow seating for people when we have dinner parties.
So what we normally do is we put three couples at the dining table and two couples will sit on the church pew.
And it acts as kind of like a little cocktail lounge, which we love.
And sometimes when I've got other young families here and we're eating pizza,
all the little kids will kind of pile in here, all their little booties.
We can fit like eight kids up here and they love it so much.
And it's just a fun antique piece just to really anchor this space underneath this large window
that opens up into our backyard.
We've got some Fairmoy drapery in here.
Fairmoy is one of my favorite textile companies based in the UK.
They do really beautiful, bold colors and more geometric patterns.
And I love the contrast of that along with kind of our more traditional chairs
and some of the other pieces in our home.
And then kind of another focal point in this space besides the fireplace
is this piece of art by Caroline Penny.
She's an artist who is from Richmond, but lives in Austin, Texas.
And this was probably one of the first pieces of art that I bought during COVID
when times got a little dark and I needed something to bring me joy.
So I found this piece and I absolutely love it.
It's got all of our colors.
And it's flanked in between two Verdigris antique sconces from Paris
that my old boss, the old firm I used to work for, gave them to me as a gift.
And I forever treasure them.
They've got candles in them that we light for dinner parties
and we have special occasions.
And we absolutely love them.
So I am a lighting scientist.
I do not like recess lights.
I like ambient light.
I like it to be really soft.
So we added this contemporary light over the dining table.
When I do have a dinner party, I dim it to its lowest point.
We dim the picture light to its lowest point
and then I light all the candles.
And we get some really soft lighting that we absolutely love.
So these two pieces are the most recent pieces I've purchased for our home.
They're by an artist named Leslie Swiegler.
She paints silver.
And it may look like a photograph, but it's actually a painting.
And I just love kind of like the throwback to the silver.
And I feel like the way she's painting them on these boards,
it feels somewhat contemporary.
And I really like that juxtaposition.
So these are two pieces that I really treasure.
So one thing about this house that we fell in love with
were the random width heart of pine floors.
But they are very well loved in a lot of places.
And we wanted to add some floor coverings
that didn't really take away from the space,
but kind of anchored the space and add a little bit of warmth.
So in both of our main spaces, I have seagrass rugs
and I layered with some specialty rugs.
So on top of this seagrass rug is a flat weave
from Lily Cat Designs based in Birmingham.
She's kind of one of my go-tos for finding fun and different rugs.
So I love this piece because it was neutral
and again kind of the contrast with the geometry
and the pattern with the traditional chairs I love.
I came into this line of work kind of by chance.
I majored in business in college
and was in the fundraising world for a while,
but I never truly loved what I did.
And on the side, I was always rearranging my room,
helping my friends.
And one day I had a friend in the industry
who introduced me to my previous boss
who's based in D.C. and she took a chance on me.
And I worked under her for five years
and then COVID happened and I ended up transitioning
to start and launch my own business about five years ago.
So I spend a lot of time up in D.C. with my clients
and then I've got a couple clients here as well.
And a lot of what I do is related to interior design
is not only like furniture and art curation
and wallpaper and textiles,
but I also help a lot with renovations and new builds
and with the construction selections process.
So it just kind of depends on the scale
and scope of each project,
but my firm handles all of those.
So now we'll head into our formal living room.
So this space is off of our dining room.
As you can see, we have a lot of step-downs
in our quirky old house that we love.
The opening is flanked by these built-ins
that were original.
You know, they're kind of pared down,
not super decorative,
but they are great to display.
Books that we have that are kind of
treasured for my grandmother.
And then also with kind of some knick-knacks
that I've collected over time
and some family photos that I love.
This is one of my favorite rooms in the house,
probably my favorite room in the house.
We've got 10-foot ceilings in here
and old plaster walls
and this beautiful old fireplace.
I, as I was kind of putting my art
into this space, you know,
I had this amazing contemporary piece
by Fletcher Williams.
It's over my sofa.
And then I wanted something to contrast that.
And I was up in my mom's attic
and found a replica of a,
one of our ancestors in her attic.
And her name was Mary Rennie Forsyth.
And I have hung it up over our fireplace.
And she's become kind of
one of our favorite pieces in this house.
My friend Brit with Gilded Lily.
Again, you know,
I wanted to do something different
with the garland in here.
I didn't want it to be,
I wanted it to be a little unexpected.
And I thought disco balls
and this is what she came up with.
And I love it.
It's fun.
It's quirky.
I love the contrast
against kind of this traditional portrait
with having this sort of decoration below.
It turned out great.
This room also has a seagrass rug
with an Ushak on top.
This one is from
Verve Furnishings here in Richmond.
And I also have
a couple antiques in here.
So this pair of chairs
is from Mid-Century Morris
here in Richmond.
She has an amazing collection
of mid-century modern pieces.
These are Italian chairs from the 70s
that we recovered in a Fairmoy fabric
that we love.
I wanted something to be,
that was a small footprint here
that we could easily move around
when we have parties.
And they're perfect.
We've loved them so much.
This coffee table is from Highland House.
I wanted to have a coffee table
that we could have drinks on.
The kids could eat on.
They could color on.
And we're not worried
about it being super precious.
It's got a glass top
so I can easily clean it off.
Opposite of the fireplace
we have a sofa from Coley Home.
It's in a performance green linen.
So it came pretreated from the mill.
So it holds up against
our messy little kids
and our messy life.
Above it is a piece of art
from Fletcher Williams.
He is an artist based in Charleston
and was a piece I purchased
probably five or six years ago
and didn't have a home for
until we moved to this house.
It was in storage for a couple years.
But we love it.
It sets the tone for this house again.
I feel like a little unexpected
and a little bit of contrast.
Opposite of these
two little pink chairs
I've got these antique French chairs
that are from a little shop
based in Charlottesville.
They are covered again
in a Fairmoy fabric
that is geometric
and kind of a soft blue.
I have a little footstool
tucked under here.
This was actually
my grandmother's footstool
that I recovered.
And it's in another
Fairmoy fabric.
And funny little story.
This footstool comes to
every photo shoot I do
for all of my client projects.
It's hidden
in almost every single house
that I love
kind of bringing
a piece of her with me.
Behind the chairs
is a sideboard.
This was my great-grandparents'
original dining table
that we have folded down
and used it as a sideboard.
Normally we have
a record player here
right now during the holidays.
We have a really fun
beautiful hurricane from Stone
that I love.
I have a pair of them
that we take them outside
when we entertain.
And then we also
light them here.
They normally are
on top of the fireplace.
But because we have
all the garland over the holidays,
it's living next to the tree.
The Roman shade
is in a jasper fabric.
Again, it's kind of
this theme of contrast.
The pattern is quite modern,
the chevron,
but the characters within it
are like little mice
and leaves and cornucopias
and more traditional elements.
So I love having that
kind of woven
throughout our home.
And then next to us
we have our tree,
which is filled with
a lot of ornaments
that have seen better days.
And we're slowly adding
to our collection,
but a lot of them
are childhood ornaments
that were mine
when I was little
and homemade ones
from our kids.
But I wouldn't have it
any other way.
I love it.
And then I've got
a couple photos
of my kids mixed in here.
I don't know
if you can see this,
but I ended up framing
kind of the bloopers
of my kids' formal portraits
instead of the serious ones.
So it's my son.
This one's of my son
looking like silly
and kind of like,
Mom, what are you doing?
And my daughter
looking a little mad.
But this kind of like
captures their little souls
and their essences,
and I treasure those
and love them.
I use this space
every single day.
This is where I have
my coffee in the morning.
I'm an early riser,
so I wake up in the morning,
make my cappuccino,
and I come sit on the sofa
and wake up
before the kids
and the chaos start.
So this is kind of
my like peaceful place.
This time of year,
I've been lighting
the Christmas tree
in the morning,
and it's been wonderful.
We also use this space
for entertaining
and overflow
from the dining room.
And we let the kids
come in here.
Nothing is super precious,
so in the evenings
when my husband and I
are having a cocktail,
we let them color in here.
You know,
we have some little
kids' chairs
that are normally here.
They play all over this furniture,
so we use every space
in our home,
and especially this one.
My vision for this space
was really to,
keep blank kind of slate,
so I wanted to
keep the walls white.
They came white,
and I decided
to not add any color
because I have so much color
in my art
and my furniture
and textiles,
so I wanted to
almost feel like a gallery.
You know,
I have a lot of
different vignettes of art.
This one over the sofa.
These three over here
that I love.
The holidays mean to me
family and friends
and happiness
and joy
and laughter
and,you know,
especially this holiday,
this is our second year
in this house.
I feel like we've like,
I've had a chance
to kind of put my stamp on it,
and I got my friend,
Britt,
with Gilded Lily Designs
to come in and help me
kind of really showcase
our fireplace mantles
and do something
kind of fun and funky.
So I've loved being able
to kind of build off of
the initial design of the house
and add kind of
this holiday touch.
It makes the house,
I feel,
seem even more whimsical
and bring out the soul
of it even more.
So I started decorating.
We got our tree
right after Thanksgiving,
and then my friend Britt
came in yesterday
and we did a whole day
of decorating,
which was really fun.
We were blasting
Christmas music
and setting up all day.
So I've got a basement
that is very old and creaky,
but I store everything down there.
It's kind of like
my party closet down there.
You know,
we have a lot of
family traditions
related to the holidays,
specifically decorating
the Christmas tree.
We always get it
this Saturday after Thanksgiving.
We go and pick it out
as a family,
and then we come back
and, you know,
my husband and I
fight a little bit
about trying to get it up
and making sure it's straight,
and then we normally,
you know, make a fire
and all decorate
the Christmas tree
together as a family.
Okay, now we're going
to head up to my kids' rooms.
We're in my kids' room.
This is a space
that used to be
just my daughter's room,
and then as my two children
got a little bit older,
we decided to transition them
into one room,
and I wanted to make it
boy and girl themed
since they're both
living in this space,
so I feel like
kind of the piece
that kind of inspired me
for this space
were these little canopies
that we got from Project Kit NYC.
I wanted it to feel cozy
and special
and kind of like a play area
because they spend a lot of time
playing up here,
and I really love them dearly.
We also have this fun piece of art
from Seth McCauley.
She does amazing art.
It's kind of hidden in here,
but it says
Help, I'm bored again.
This is an old pine chest
that I got from
a little antique shop
here in Richmond
that I love
that we use as a dresser,
and then we've got
these little Jenny Lin beds
with Peter Dunham
throw pillows on them
for each of my kids,
but they spend a lot of time
playing up here.
We've got their rocking horse
and their train set
that you can probably see
on the ground,
but we've had fun
decorating this space
for Christmas
with some little stars
and twinkle lights,
and yeah.
This light fixture
is from Visual Comfort.
It's called the Cristal.
I love it because
it's kind of, you know,
a little funky and edgy,
and I loved how it adds
a little, like, flare
in their space.
And one thing that I did
recently also
when we transitioned them
into the same space
is I had some painters
come in and we added
blue paint kind of
in the lower half of the space.
I would have loved
to have done wallpaper,
but just in the kind of vein
of keeping things
less complicated,
we added some paint,
and it's kind of this fun way
to add a pop
in a more cost-effective way.
So these little bookshelves
are original to the house,
and it works perfect for my kids
because they are big readers,
and my daughter
normally has lots of
little knick-knacks
kind of, like, hidden behind here,
but right now we have it
all cleaned up for Christmas.
But we love it.
It's nice because
other books are displayed here
and they can pick out
what they want to read every night,
and she can keep
her little water cup there.
So it's a fun little feature
that was original to the house
that she uses every night.
My daughter loves animals,
specifically giraffes,
so I found these
spelt animal heads,
and we hung them up on her wall.
I let her pick out
which of the animals
she wanted,
and they're kind of
a fun little play.
And then we have
these cute little stools.
They're from TOV Furniture,
but they're great
because the kids will sit in them,
or I'll sit in them
while my husband's reading
or I'm reading,
and it's kind of like
a little overflow seating.
So this is the only room
where we kind of did
a custom-cut rug
because I wanted the space
to feel really cozy for the kids.
It's actually a material
that's indoor-outdoor,
so it feels like wool,
but it's very hardy
and stains come up.
My kids color everywhere,
sometimes use nail polish,
all the things,
so it was important to me
to put down a material
that was gonna stand
the test of time
but still be really soft.
So these little closets,
you know, again,
original to the house.
They get a little stuck sometimes.
Let me give it a good tug.
So these are little closets.
This one's my son's,
for example,
but they're just big enough
for little kids' hangers,
but they're perfect.
I love them.
So when I was thinking
about designing this space,
not only did I want it
to work for both a boy and a girl,
but I wanted to be able
to grow with them.
So this room will eventually
just become my son's room,
so I wanted to design it
in a way that could
kind of grow with him.
So, you know,
the canopies won't be here
for forever,
the animals won't,
but this paint detail
will continue to stay
and the rug,
and then we can transition it
into kind of a more mature space
as he grows older.
But, yeah,
I didn't want it to feel
like a nursery or too young.
I wanted it to feel
like a little fun
but still childlike.
So I think we did it.
So home means to me
comfort and calm
and peace and inspiration.
Thanks for watching.
