A very special start to this pre-season friendly against AC Milan for Chelsea.
Both the Club World Cup and Conference League trophies on display in the centre circle at Stamford Bridge
ahead of kick-off of this Visit Malta weekender friendly against AC Milan.
Chelsea versus AC Milan in the Blues, final warm-up of this truncated pre-season.
We are just a week away from the big kick-off against Crystal Palace here,
so this is the last chance to tune up ahead of the new campaign.
Kukerea, Calabar, Caicedo and Parma are the four players who started against Leverkusen on Friday,
who also do today.
Jamie Gittins and Joao Pedro both impressed off the bench, they're in from the off,
and Robert Sanchez returns in goal.
Familiar faces in the Milan line-up as Mikaio Tamori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek return to the bridge.
Both Cobham graduates have become pivotal figures for the Rossoneri.
Raphael Leal scored 12 goals last season.
Kukerea with Jamie Gittins on the left-hand side.
Celebrated his 21st birthday when he played on Friday.
He's won a free kick for the challenge by Younes Moussa there.
I was just wondering if he was going to do a Benfica.
I've got no idea how this has ended up in the back of the net.
Yes, it's a great delivery.
And yes, they're deep on the edge of the six-yard box.
Aren't we looking for Mike Manley to do something there?
He's stuck to his line.
I think he's got to come and claim that now.
Can he build on it?
He didn't manage really to build on it on Friday evening until later on.
However, Chelsea come again.
Tidy from Caicedo into James.
He's moved it out to Pedro Neto.
Enzo Fernandes, an option for him.
James on the overlap.
Clipped in by Neto for João Pedro.
It's 2-0 already.
Oh, Chelsea are cooking now, all right.
And this guy just can't stop scoring.
Placed onto his head.
He plants it beyond Magnon.
Chelsea are flying.
The season can't start quickly enough.
It's Chelsea 2, AC Milan 0.
We've not even played for ten minutes yet.
This is a brilliant goal.
Make no mistake about that.
Brilliant goal.
Reissane down the right-hand side.
He overlaps.
He takes the fall back away.
Allows Pedro a little bit more space to cut in on his left foot.
But you know what he wants to do?
The run's timed beautifully.
Ooh.
Wow, that link-up play there.
They're the partnerships.
That's the relationships I'm talking about.
Could that be one?
Beautifully crafted, beautifully executed.
2-0.
They are moving it on for Salamakas.
He'll have a go.
It hits Sanchez.
There's Leal on the follow-up.
Well, Sanchez didn't know anything about the save,
and Leal didn't have much time to react to the second opportunity either.
But showing a little bit of something in an attacking sense
in the last couple of minutes, the visitors.
Yeah, that's twice now they've got through
quite easily through the middle of the park.
The shot comes in.
Yeah, you're right.
He makes sure he doesn't go to ground, Robert Sanchez.
He's done brilliantly, Roger Pedro.
He's brought down.
What's Michael Salisbury going to do here?
Is he going to give it as a pre-season-friendly decision
and not show the red card?
Or is he going to take it seriously?
No, give a yellow, referee.
Don't send him off.
We don't want that.
I don't want to see that because we need minutes.
We need 11 v 11.
That's not going to help us if he goes there.
It's borderline.
Oh, referee!
I don't get that, Matt.
Well, it's going from bad to worse.
Honestly, I don't understand that.
I'm not even sure that is a red, you know.
I'm not totally convinced it is.
I think that's a poor decision from the referee.
Well, it completes a miserable afternoon for Andre Kubis.
He's got an own goal and a red card to his name
and we've not played for 20 minutes yet.
Palmer and James, the principal characters
over the free kick here.
Who's taking this, Matt?
Palmer.
Addressing the ball and bending it round
and hitting the post.
My goodness me.
What a strike that was.
Mannion will tell you he had that covered.
I'm not sure I believe him.
No, he bends it.
He just can't quite bend it.
Oh, you can see the perfect angle we've just seen
on our monitor here.
Bends it round the wall, gets enough whip.
Well, not quite enough whip.
Comes off the outside of the post.
Mike Mannion has not got that covered, let me tell you.
He's had a sighter.
He can only go that same corner that he did against Brighton, surely.
And it's Palmer!
Oh, my goodness me.
Well, Jason wasn't the only person inside Stamford Bridge
who thought that'd hit the net.
A whisker away from Cole Palmer.
Wowzers.
Again, Mike Mannion.
He was slightly closer to that one than he was
the one that hit the post, in all honesty.
But if he'd done his homework, I don't know, Matt.
If that's going top bins, I'm not sure he gets that,
in all honesty.
Just to finish on Palmer, by the way, on the ball now.
With all that talk of a dip that he had,
he's still got more Premier League goals and assists
than anybody else for Chelsea last season.
Enzo Fernandez looking for Pedro,
and then Palmer had a scissor kick attempt.
He chains up in the lower tier of the shed,
but nearly saw Mannion picking the ball out of his net
for the third time in half an hour.
Should do better, really.
I'm going to be critical here of Palmer.
It's lovely play down the right-hand side again.
The Whitford pitch will be used.
This time Enzo just floats one in.
Palmer then just...
The ball's over the top of João Pedro.
Better from Palmer.
Everything but the finish.
10 v 10 at the moment.
João Pedro at the wall.
Hitting on Cole Palmer.
Finally Jamie Gittins.
And Moussa did enough to put him off.
AC Milan should score, there's no doubt about that.
They're after a corner, and the referee's not giving it.
Jamie Gittins and Palmer are both doing the international sign
for the...
Palms out, shrug shoulders.
But Rhys does so well to get himself back onside, Matt.
Overload here.
Neto.
Gittins' urge to shoot.
Probably ought to have hit the target.
Yeah, he's a...
A bit of an excitable puppy.
Needs to have a little bit more composure in those areas there.
Brilliant run down the right-hand side from Pedro Neto.
Gittins has a good first touch.
Should hit the target.
The goal's gaping.
It's Dillap.
Drilled it low across.
Beautiful ball to the spot.
It's a brilliant ball that Dillap's drilled across the face of the six-yard box.
I've often said this, some of the best crossers in the game
are the centre-forwards.
They know where they want it.
Drills it across.
From this angle I can't quite see whether there is a foul or not.
It's hard to tell, Matt.
Well, it's only a friendly.
But this is a pressure moment for Liam Dillap.
Yes, it is.
In front of the Matthew Harding stand.
Joao Pedro has already scored today.
He got his first official goal.
Now looking for his first at Stamford Bridge.
Dillap versus Magnon.
Oh, he's drilled it into the bottom corner.
Brilliant penalty from Liam Dillap.
And look what it means to him.
That number nine shirt carries a very, very special weight.
He's just made it a little bit lighter on his back with that.
Dispatched clinically.
Chelsea 3, AC Milan 0.
You're absolutely right about the pressure.
Because he's seen what Pedro has done.
And he has to score.
And he does.
It's a brilliant penalty.
Drills it hard and low to the goalkeeper's right.
He smashes it in, actually.
Great power.
Now Chelsea's dominance in this game reflects in the scoreline.
Salamaka's clever ball there.
Real chance here.
And they do have a goal back.
Youssef Fafana beats Robert Sanchez.
It is near post.
And 10-man Milan have some credibility to the scoreline from their perspective.
And again, Matt, there have been moments in this game where we have looked a little bit vulnerable defensively.
It's a lovely piece of skill.
Some lessons to be learned in this game defensively, Matt.
I think that there are.
We do look a little bit too open at times.
When you're in possession, the shape of the team is so different.
Anyway, Chelsea on the ball.
Esteveo into the box.
He's going to shoot as well.
Esteveo brings a good save from Mike Magnon to tip it behind for another corner.
Looking for his second goal here in a couple of days.
Yeah, one thing on his mind.
Picks it up on the right-hand side.
And cuts in on that favourite left foot of his.
Oh, it's another Chelsea hit for as they warm up for the new season in the best way possible.
Yeah, brilliantly taken.
Not dissimilar, actually, to the goal that Jean-Pedro scored on Friday evening.
Same corner, similar distance.
Just drills it.
Gets good contact on it.
Really well crafted down the right-hand side.
It's just a little flick inside.
Who actually flicks it inside here, Matt?
Liam de Lap at the double.
That was the last kick of the game.
And Chelsea have won it by four goals to one.
And this pre-season, as brief as it's been, has delivered everything that the Blues were hoping it to, I think.
Indeed. Absolutely.
Lots of goals.
Very pleased about some individual and collective performances that we have seen.
In particular, Jean-Pedro.
And then de Lap coming off the bench and getting his brace.
But there will be stiffer tests ahead, that's for sure.
But yes, well done, boys.
And a beautiful afternoon has produced lots of goals.
What's not to love?
Yeah, pre-season rounded off in style.
A week from today, the serious business begins.
But at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, we finish Chelsea 4, AC Milan 1.
Another trophy for Chelsea in 2025.
